I haven't caught up with the previous three seasons yet, but season four of The Wire is the most brilliant, layered piece of art as social commentary I've ever seen on TV. And even that doesn't do it justice, because... it's a very angry show, that season in particular is really holding a mirror up to society about politics and education, but it's also very human, emotional storytelling that invests you in these characters. And the writers are incredible at structuring the plot through the season so you can't not get addicted and blaze right through it. And the cast is amazing. And Omar! And Bubbles! /squee
Sorry for the rant, I never get to talk Wire. :) It ended up at the top of a lot of critics' lists but otherwise it just seems criminally ignored by everyone.
