Vividcon 2010 Vid Review Notes

Here is the Vid Review, In Depth Vid Review and Challenge review notes for Vividcon 2010. As before, I obviously missed some things and nothing is typed up perfectly. If you notice any mistakes, please let me know so I can correct them or add more to comments that I didn't get everything from.

Vid Review
REVIEW ALL THE VIDS!!!!
1) Character
A. Accessible
-wading deep water: emotion came through, accessible face, focus on face and environment helped the vid for me
-hold me: first 15 seconds, what is this show and why not watching
-hold me: felt like a comic book movie
-when i'm up: what fandom this is and why are people fans and finally figured it out, not sure if it was successful but made me wonder about the hair
-all character vids had ups and downs except because i'm awesome
-but because I'm awesome had ups and downs just mostly up
-another song for when im up so i had trouble because the other vid owned the song, a boundary i had to break through
-worried about the song choice for when im up, glad when i saw the vid because its a completely different vid, other was romance while this one was other perspective, i really felt this stood on its own and was an accessible vid
-a lot more vids were accessible than on character list, wonderful show and liked the show, lots of sources most of us didnt know, lots of talent, using narrative structure and storytelling, people knew people wouldnt know, real effort to make sure there would be structure and storytelling, hold me was a complex, tragic story, guy took a fall and disorienting with other sv vid where guy couldnt find his pants, can do both of those things...need vidshow of "is this the same show"
-things have changed: angel, angel vid song to that song but glad it was wesley, similar things, reminded me how much like angel wesley became
-pursuit of happiness, wading, never better: all three of them show CoC connecting with their families, as well as worrying about whatever extremely dire situations they were in, had agency, not overwhelmed by things
-unfamiliar with the fandom, ensemble vids can be overwhelming but character studies and their connections with their people, of many fandoms and one of them i could connect to most strongly-wading deep
-wading: cut slow enough to be able to follow this character that i dont know, only vid where i could follow the words and the words had a lot to say even if you dont know the show, only one where the lyrics told how to read the vid
-when im up: never seen the show, took me awhile to recognize, only mean something to people who recognize, fun squeeful picspam
-song choice-things have changed/wading: very simple, kind of bluesy structure, know nothing about structure but lyrics were simple with one thing in each verse, because each verse was phonetically stressed so I could tell exactly and with thing have changed w/simple structure could follow wesley's...song was too complicated for watershed and hold me, could see they were struggling but simple words for other vids made it easier to follow
-watershed: transparent kind of vid: vid was reclaiming morgana, screw you if you think im totally disempowered, strong use of metaphor of arthur=fire, morgana=water, tell you about temperament, really enjoyed as a character piece, used to poor morgana she got screwed (it was not)
-accessibility valley regarding fandoms i know a little about that were completely unfamiliar fandom but felt like i was getting out of the vid while with little knowledge wanted to understand everything which it was wall and felt like i got out nothing
B. Character (Contextual)
-wire vids: felt like i could see there was a story in never better but couldnt quite follow it whereas pursuit of happiness showed character before, tell a more complex story in that vid
-woman in that vid (Left Hand Song) is a married women who has trouble in marriage with husband in affair with other man, kind of dark, had visual cues with dress
-i found down boy very accessible, i never knew sarah kicked ass so i thought it was interesting and fun to follow so i found it more accessible
-i cant hear the music: accessible on an emotional level, set a great mood, with a sense of melancholy, wanted to know, emotionally knew what was going on
-a lot of vids in this category were more accessible, had a hard time getting in with chuck because it wasn't immediately clear that it was sarah vid and thought it was a vid about chuck, thought it was a weakness in the subject of the vid
-left hand song: most successful on that list, the longing was very clear, it ended on a very accessible note
-ada: most that made me interested in inglorious bastards, so now grateful b/c only part [worth seeing?]
-down boy: really liked, 60% of vid a lot, know nothing about chuck except kind of silly, the parts about sarah were convincing, it was kickass and then it was left turn into random silliness, not an invalid song for vid to do tonally but needed song that cued tonal shift to silliness
-only familiar with DS9, having that narrative context in the vid, helped make more accessible, all did a good job with providing a story in addition to character work
-chuck vid: about sarah and then intermittent silliness with chuck falling down made me think of kink, with chuck going down and down boy lyrics, made me think of dog
-left hand song was very accessible, ada was interesting way of refocusing the source
-two vids with interracial relationships were one after another so heh, okay...
-many people pointing out accessible, bloodbuzz ohio thought was accessible but was not (unibomber), sympathetic character that I wanted to sympathize with doing terrible things
-i cant hear the music: music was a little too soulful for character who was Machiavellian, made her seem more nice, more about fall than her action
-breaking bad vid: really strange watching vid as it opened, main character of walter is hs chem, missed it, very important to establish (-was established) and did research and thought that should have been shown
C. Relationship
-time bomb: surprised to see in relationship category, relationship between doctor and his angst, loved song and by the end had sense of clip fatigure, song felt fresh and appropriate and for me, very familiar, felt the clips were undercut with money shot so could predict what could happen next, the countdown and recursiveness worked fabulously
-the line was my love would never die: it doesnt depend on other things, it kept showing his relationship dying
-mickey, vid has subtitles on bottom, helped change the meaning, text that described
-not familiar with mickey, but enjoyed so much, both inclusion of subtitles brought a sense of joy just added with all the way the vidder had intercut cheerleading sequences, shes one of the boys amanda bynes
-whatever you need: emotional arc with the way the...
-the way you found me: best way of cockerel?, really hilarious not know at all
-timebomb: relationship between audience, annoyed by ten, vid laid on his tears and suffering so was impatient by end, didnt take into account how people are sympathetic towards ten, pre-handlebars, suffered from context outside of vid
-brothers: very accessible and very interesting, beautifully balanced in structure, time devoted to each, clip length, feeling i came away with, structurally mirrored each other so i was very ready for them becoming friends, becoming brothers
-ecstatic to see jdrama and kdrama: loved whatever you need, dont end up together, such a shipper, theres like 5 versions of same story with different language so not familiar, loved song choice and so much more angsty and was so beautiful
-all those effects were in those shows so i didnt realize itd make the show
-love becoming brothers: pink sparkley hearts about vince and luke and vidder, fnl is such an ensemble show, to be able to crystallize tiny pieces that show these two guys coming into conflict and then show understanding and in quiet way
-made the point, got in, got out
-hateful: interesting because p/n is quite happy but this vid cleverly chose a song that made it so complicated, made me wonder why neal was staying...does he really mind
-whatever you need: incredibly warm and layers creating a density, sense of warmth and connection, lovely picture of the story as a whole
-whatever you need: come from another ideas-this was a complex relationship but was deeply creepy and unhealthy and wouldnt turn back on them, pale hair was some kind of creepy stalker
-way you found me: never realized they had that many moments together on the show to exasperation to resignation to eventually friends, liked the quality of 90s to it, fits show for nostalgia, didnt have budget
-mickey: subtitles were difficult sell for me, vid is so visual, vid is animated and colorful, splitting of subtitles was a burden versus letting the vid sort of happen to me, reduced initial joy for me, can understand the choice and they really do ? the vid, doesnt give us a powerful viewing as i think it might, tension between enjoying the first time around and so immediately felt distracted whenever i see subtitles
-could tell more about what was happening, easier to watch (mickey), struggle to understand lyrics and getting it so was happy about the subtitles
D. Ensemble
-loved goodbye, hard show for people to follow along with vids (unfamiliar), vidder did a great job of distilling all the elements of the sow, excellent ending
-constant refrain of goodbye, goodbye, got this impression of people trying to get out of traps they were in, clearly got repeat
-watchman vids: never seen movie but seen books, vids captured the spirit of the book, someone made a vid of the book, these two vids captured the spirit of the book
-watchman vids: two of them concerned would ...attention of the audience, very different vids, felt like i was watching two different movies
-loved both fnl vids, thought the show was more about happy and football, relationships between people and institutions, institutional poverty, having no escape, this set up beautifully for second fnl vids so it was even more uplifting because i had seen Goodbye first and knew how much it meant
-watchman first: great use of inanimate objects, great use of trophies, w/o extensive background to give sense of purpose and the associations between them so could find together concept and characters with this sense of symbology
-during fireworks vid: panning across all the different hockey awards, with ambitious dudes wife photograph, showed what it was about...
-20/20 incredibly beautiful source even more beautful, more twisted, revealed dark parts about show, showed best parts of the show, dont need to watch it because everything is in that video
-fireworks felt inaccessible because pov was not accesible, you was not maintained
-watchmen vids were speaking of story of comics, talking about universe of story versus individuals/relationships, didnt see two of them consistently enough, kissing before bomb but didnt see those two characters enough beforehand to feel importance, just the moment of horror of love among the ruins
E. Thematic
-around the bend: beginning was concerned about source and that helped bring into premieres, lets me relax and let it wash all over
-seven: from one to another, forgot how lynch makes uncomfortable, foreboding and lack of comfort works so well, portrayed very very well
-black dove: holy crap, so creepy, familiar with it, love you joss but you can do creepy things, exploited in that same in a visceral way, beautiful song from childhood way done in a different way pulled you into a crazy weird place
-loved around the bend: great still shots of historical footage, kicked ass all along with context
-narrow escape: disaster porn kink more than i thought
-around the bend: about us, girls with machines, coming togeter, lots of couples and groups of women, all sort of moving together, us roadtripping together with projecter in back
-around the bend: dont know about vids, expected more vids like this, talk about the world, talk about the world, do more of this (saying to them)
-stay awake: loved the editing, how sharp it was, didnt go on too long, shot remembered, all of the women in allentown holding up their ships, ALL the violations that have been done upon these
-thought narrow escape was all one movie, didnt want to watch it
-around the bend was great, ground to sky was great, way that women interact is different than from fetishness of bikini, enjoying women on their own terms
-seven: lynch was so creepy but so pretty
-stay awake: dont be a women on tv because once they get bored with the plot then theyre knock you up without regard to your body (?)
-liked around the bend, women and cars!! going fast, all of my favorite things, if only there were explosions, so many different kinds of women, so many different times, beyonce and lady gaga with pussy wagon, made of sweet moments
-stay awake: effective in changing gendered perspective on a horror trope, usually mystical pov from male gaze, women's bodies are weird and creepy, vagina is trying to eat us but this for me was fantastic in a women's perspective kind of way, how we're trying to escape from that
-contrast around the bend with stay awake: SA was similar to male gaze, extremely hostile especially in a group of women, did not see anything other than a threat to women, did not see women's gaze, pornographic view
-light of day: knows source, more about a relationship vid, felt like father-daughter relationship, trying to bring light of day to daughters but fail because of miscommunication, very interesting in that sense
-mods dont know source, closing moment was the bombs going off was the light which felt like exploitation
-unusual to see spoken word vid (bitter-sweet_, recontextualized the movie and it pulled it back to a female perspective and changed it
-build on comments on light of day, reason i stopped watching caprica was didnt like adult characters, focused on three girls which was tailor made for the show i wish i was watching
-stay awake: choice of version, we know about it in a different way, a-capella and minor mode shifted it, shifted from straight trope, teyla and ? had wanted pregnancies turned bad
-stay awake: very disturbing, doesnt have positive message but need to point out the problem to show and it makes you aware of that problem and after that look at the source in a different way
-Seven: beautiful, very much a film commentary, hanging a lantern on the way of exploitation of women, lynch's movies are about the way women are used by the camera in hollywood, points out laura and MD, commented on lynch and movies and did it beautifully, bears rewatching
-adored around the bend, see it as about vidders and inglorious bastards, dont fuck with vidders or they're blow up your room
-bitter-sweet: medival, middle eastern poet, disappointed to see vid about pain of white people, problematic song choice
F. Comedy
-enjoyed just cant wait to be king, didnt stick to spock's pov until later in the vid, held me back from the vid as i was watching
-even though consistent pov was helpful, because kirk's voice was so distinctive it helped with telling people to tell to shut up and sit down
-two kirk vids confirmed fannish opinion that kirk is an asshat, showed that a person in power dont always make the wisest choices, disney focuses embedded in brain, everything all falls down, sits down and looks at kingdom, tongue in cheek of we all know whats going to be happening with this ascension of power, compare kirk vids with DS9 vid compared with people in power set in space, sympathy in DS9, came from her own awareness of her flaws as well as an older woman made more sympathetic even though i felt both of them made bad choices with corruption of power
-boy king: had my fill of boys and their angst, oh god oh no angsty sam and his hair and it was such a relief and sunshine because it was perfect use of song for a fandom that takes itself too seriously (WHAT), vid worked well in that respect in that sense (SHEEP)
-has vividcon context in that there were a lot of women on ceiling exploding, and this was laughing at that
-kirk vids and stay awake: layer missing, didnt know any of those songs, completely lost for me, liked sheep because i didnt know the song, loved whats happenening, verbs are important
-boy king: horror movie sequel, going on and on and on, oh lord what are they going to do now, sheep song was awesome
G. Lonely Hearts Vids
-Black Dove: technical issue, two sources didnt match, looked like it was a parallel moment and then it was a crossover with balcony, looked at lyrics: lived in another universe, across the universe," i have lived", reincarnation vid, interesting that despite the technical issues, the vidder was doing something quite interesting in terms of concept
-shift in parallel to crossover, occupying the same space, remind me of the language of vids, heres 30 seconds of one character and then shifted to another universe, we have shifted to another and combined parallels...it felt like that wall came crumbling down, pulled out from under me
-when drusilla showed up, thought it was crazy brunette and waited for fred but then realized it was supposed to be river/drusilla, was looking for parallels, thought river would be more unstable and river was more untrodden, interesting experiment that didnt go where i wanted it to go
-two characters set up with similar problems, put on them in similar way by social system, by men and then had to make choices that they had made, river was disproving of a lot of choices drusilla had made in her life, looks upset, fighting whats been done whereas drusilla has given in
-needed some kind of framing device, either title card or some showing of both characters
- caged bird: visually amazing but didnt know what the hell was going on
-love this, appreciate (and seven), how much it felt like a lesson in filmmaking and cinematography, how these concepts are brought to us(?), didn't need to be familiar with it, great deconstruction of source, what you need to see, the corridors in seven in mobius strip are connected by highways, used striking cinematography, love both to death, wonderful imagery
-confused by vid, didnt know if you were supposed to know the source, weirded out by the song choice, in movie its very strange like vid, vid was made with source being made with plastic material, not like a fanvid, youre not supposed to know the video and in that context it works, i get it, the images being surreal, deconstructing
-thought it was beautiful but no idea what was going on, dont know whats going on in movie either, such a relief, one vid to watch and enjoy on no other way and could just appreciate beauty, could turn off brain that wants to know how she died or whatever, nice treat to have that experience
-single person to more people to no person: source doesnt matter, is the technique the same??
-made me think about, let go of need to understand whats going on, still hard to give up the emotional connection, character vids are most easy to watch without context, Southland video the easier to get because i didnt need to...intellectual puzzle, about perspective, crystallize with the statue, see shots from different angles, OH, thats what this vid is about, looking at the same thing from lots of angles and looking at what you can and cant see, gave a handle even though i still didnt know what was going on, women in feathered dress = caged bird, can spot a metaphor, rewatch with that in mind
-was emotional, vidders as a group, emotion it wanted to produce was uncertainty, confusion, spellbound with dream sequence with that feeling, Hitchcock?? pairing with seven it was a very filmic vid, both were about face...vid like houses leaves, moving through corridors, sense that vid was about lostness in that space and in vidder ...about roads and exploitations and trapped in space (lynch)
-around the bend: made me really happy
-fnl vid made point very well (two boys), because I'm awesome- very squeeful and short, liked it for that
-narrow escape: liked it a lot, reminded of seven nation army vid by charmax in a good way, wasnt quite long enough, it ended and i wasnt done enough for me
-glee vids: hard to put together, essentially a song the entire time, most of the time its very musical, source, the kurt vid he is awesome and i liked the flow of that, the fashionability, way he sings, wanted to go on more but think it ended perfectly'
-loved organization by the way Premieres vidshow was ordered, funny and everyone gets into it, female empowerment to females as the disempowerment...stay awake disempowerment to morgana take back
-narrow escape: i liked the title came at the end, spins, it doesnt go all the way...missed adam lambert going through apocolypitic space
-verb: didnt know the song, kirk: thats whats happening
-light of day: strong sense of spirituality...from infinity symbol, candle, light shining in, spirituality
-ordering: stay awake and narrow escape, close together, read both in similar way, forboding was ? wondering if we were going to see,..stay awake: everything that could have been in but wasnt, narrow escape became a joke

In Depth Vid Review
I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked by cappylicious and sisabet
-one woman all the way through not two
-liked them better when they were superheroes and then liked clark better when he's not superman and then not or maybe vulnerable
-naked = honesty, wanted to know the person, not sure how it works without context of show, knowing context, knew she kissed dressed up clark as green arrow, she finally gets honesty in end
-used repetition with difference very well, shallow sex based with first dude and then moved onto other guy with more, she got more nakedness from him eventually, found out he was superman and then it was naked vulnerability, appreciated arrow is spark metaphor??
-stopped understanding vid because of fetish, didnt know if it was superhero or naked or costume
-got the fetish right away, knows lois because she has a made costume of bikini, fetish would be those arrows, moves her way up superhero food chain, aquaman to green arrow to superman, strips away clark's costume, what she wants is a real relationship not love relationship with a superhero...signifies by her wearing the glasses at the end
-i didnt see that the nakedness is honesty, when i like you when you're naked is when you're not in your superhero costume, mostly with clark saw it in regular clothes not superhero
-i think it switches from superhero to regular, shed rather have clark than superman
-appreciated the transition from superheroes
-green lantern is much more literal than clark, more about person than persona because superman doesnt exist but the Blur does (cant explain smallville)
-favorite thing was first time saw it as amusing and seeing it again, see depth, the use of comedy has a bunch of layers, the honesty and the nakedness was getting more into a character arc im not familiar with
-blurb can be turned into, lois its called a fetish because she fetishes these clothes but it can be turned into that once she admits to herself that she needs more than costume than she likes herself more
-loved opening silliness, thank god corrected the grammar, loved the closing credits, they had visual fights in the credits so it brought it back, who won
-appreciate on a character level, she does a lot of ? in her articles
-made me like lois a lot more than exotic dancing (vid in CVV)
-loved lois saving the day at the end, clark is being emotionally vulnerable and SHES saving the day
-lois lane falling off the building is an iconic scene...
-i like me better...can be interpreted dif. ways, i like me better when im just into you naked and not into the fuckups of dating a superhero
-when green arrow first gets revealed to her, shes not ready for it, but later she is, first she cant cope with identity issues, so now she has integrated self and relationship
-mix up of face shots and wider shots was good, need more, characters are so attractive but glad it wasnt so much

Citihall
-stuff you can do with animation is talking, had to do with show in that futurama was cancelled by fox
-all hail the hypnotoad, songs that own their vid, couldnt figure out source to song, vid owns the song, we will travel in tubes, makes case for literal
-live action wont give you the material, could do it but it wouldnt be as cool
-overthrew citihall by beating fox and coming back, that is how it would go if bender took over the world
-saw 4-5 episodes, someone who said fuck you fox, loved it already
-everyone has been burned by fox sometime
-because animated source, anime watcher, didnt rely on effects as much as amv, could tell it was live aaction vidder, appreciated seeing less effects
-different from amv but not different in effects but couldnt tell if it used effects or not like with sign, part of the brilliance of it, brad is consistently good at manipulating source memories going back and forth (living dead girl) and couldnt tell when
-couldnt tell when this would end...NO not done now, riot is not over, not tired, still fun
-this doesnt feel like a vid, feels like an episode, great show, sucks you in, makes sense, not swoopy things and parallels or usual things, its a story perfectly told, every clip makes sense, watching a 5 minute short film, geniusly laid out, stood out as a different kind of vid
-cant believe how much of the show dialogue fits so well...oh wait none of the shows dialogue is in it, good meta about criticism and fan culture
-fox logo, futurama out to hollywood sign, riot to bring back show, aliens shooting the tv, us as fans, this show sucks, id do it better, hide in the bunker why everyone caused the riot, save the show campaigns, everyone else does the work while you say you participate
-on geek culture, yeah brilliance but things go to shit because theres pot involved and other stuff, not entirely positive
-doesnt feel like a vid, really like the musicality in it, subtle with cigar hits the tapestry then goes to drum..doesnt do anything, then swoop in the music and it ?, little movements work out so well...we should not decide what the shows do
-geek culture: highly competent female gets pushed aside, that seems relevant
-what would happen if we wrote the shows? porn
-fan activity: double poisoning = wankfest
-if we control the show then our pairings would be in there, we wouldnt be able to maintain the show, it wouldnt be good, not as good when it panders to the audience
-been in fandom, being involved in it ruins the show but in the end, lighthearted and fun but in the end we're all sitting on the couch bitching about how it's gone downhill
-last doctor who writers were fans of the show
-best use of tenacious D EVER, matching source and song to ridiculous precision, take the story through all of it and enjoy making fun of fox and fandom, i love it
-tube = stupid idea, that might appear when fans run something, ride the tubes to hell
-hypnotoad: other kinds of fans who dont create anything, just sit and watch
-other types of programming that fox would create: reality tv, passive tv, cheap to produce
-thats the kind of viewers the network wants to have, affronted that people take their creation in a different way
-when a show gets taken over a new producer or new actor (broken actor), their hope for magical handwave, keep watching even though its no way youve started watching which leads to waiting on sofa, this is complete shit, why are we still here
-both critical and appreciative of geek culture

Challenge

Tandemonian
-show creater's self-portrait, playing with universe as if he's god
-loved it too, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain but thats who we were paying attention to
-chilling montage of violence against women, hey this is whats inside your head
-projected by vidder, show is equally violent, when you clump it together, you can show anything
-lots of shots of gaius balter = ron moore?
-bitterness that pervades this vid, cried after episode, betrayal after, never see it again, seeing someone think the same, feel sense of solidarity
-no there is no plan: made it not a self-portrait, self-description of how he had planned the show was false, underlined other vids
-subtitles were worked in with vidder's titles, worked in with quotations and vidders own work
-not only is it ron moore's self illusions, the plans in the plot are not quite real, lots of fate
Poster of a Girl
-knew bella was a mary sue, made it so clear that she was completely mary sue
-sympathetic character study
-complicated relationship with twilight: i feel bad for her, i feel embarrassed, first fic became a big thing, she never had fandom there to help with, but then again shes rich and my boyfriend controls my friends and then oh no
-warmth toward mary sue thing, mary sue thing gets knocked down unfairly and hostile to girls, felt vid was doing that, less condemning of the mary sueness and more of the self-harm, the desperate nature of it, its lame because it's a mary sue, deeply critical
-less a twlight vid and more a rpf vid, got mary sue message but with final shot of bella in the water, more commentary of stephanie of her as a person, reminded of piece of me
-last shot of vidder saying kill yourself or she wanted to kill herself

Soldier
-love how it explored all the characters, teenage hood is where you're exploring yourself, all these people are finding themselves
-each facet of my teenage existence, my experience, looking at me, stop looking at me, ive been through what theyve been through in bits and pieces
-thought the vid wold be about one character liked show but liked how it was everyone, how theyre influenced by each other, liked that it wasnt what expected, self=group

I am a Rock
-never had sympathy for him before but now do, even if it wont last
-started laughing and wasnt meant to laugh, self-imposed isolation
-this is how uther thinks of himself, he'dd think, my son is dying but i am a rock
-only sympathetic character on that show for me, trying to drag down into emo like every other character, oh no not you too

Twinkle, twinkle
-I didnt get it as a self-portrait, thought it was interesting with a similar thing, creepy statures and was creeped out and now here's another vid thats super creeped out, similar thing, both dont cancel each other out
-portait of the vidder, great song choice
-now we're all fucking doomed since we all watched
-self-portrait is of the angels, that they become death which is what they are
-song choice was brilliant, song from a trailer of a horror video game

Vertigo
-central to the show, self is a very slippery thing, is bob a self-protrait of leland, is leland a self-portrait of bob
-both (dw) how hard it is to be a canvas, if youre amy or if youre laura, when someone imposes someone else onto you and your body
-self-portrait of leland, his relationship with his victim
-it was awesome

On the Prowl
-i feel very dirty as a fangirl who likes watching her boys suffer
-keep pushing for edge, for pushing through dark vid
-lots of talk about exploitation of women in media, it was focused on exploitation of men in media, it does have to escalate, it has to be bloodier, it has to be more violent in order for those images to feel lasting
-found it shocking, forced to look at yourself, hot guys yay, angst is okay, really dark, ok i see this is going, why isnt this shocking me more than i could
-more indulgent, my smile got bigger, same progression as serial killers, find out what victime looks like, emotional hurt, physical hurt, more feedback, deeper, it was great
