Vividcon 2011 Con Report
So another Vividcon has come and gone. Here is my con report on it. I'm fuzzier with details and people this year but I wanted to type something about it up. Thank you to everyone for all the hugs and talks throughout the con, it really helped after that awful Thursday.
On Thursday after I posted, I went to check to see if there was any chance of getting on standby. I was five and they said there was four people missing so I still had a shot. Awhile later, there was only one spot left. They called someone's name but they werre traveling as a pair and didn't want to split up. They called someone else but they had the same pair problem. FINALLY they called me and I got to go on the plane. It was only two hours earlier but it was better than nothing. The plane ride was uneventful, it was window and I managed to watch some TV and grab some sleep. I did have to wait awhile to get my luggage since there wasn't enough room for my suitcase. I found the place to catch the hotel shuttle and it thankfully came in only five minutes. So I finally made it to the hotel around 10 pm or so.
Unfortunately it was too late for registeration and I sat down to check my email for my moment. There all of a sudden I saw
bradcpu and quickly gave him a hug. We talked a little and then I saw
millylicious. I may have seen a few others I'm forgetting at the moment. I went up to my room to put my stuff there and then came down again and hung out in the lobby to greet people coming. I remember
elynross and
amireal being there and got to welcome the Thursday Chicago trip people coming back including
talitha78 and
settiai.
bradcpu came back over and we talked a little. I then went to
laura47,
elipe and
settiai's room and had fun watching Mark/Eduardo and Erik/Charles vids and learning more about comic book slash. Finally I went to bed so I could get some actual sleep.
On Friday, I went down to breakfast where I ate with
lovelokest,
revolutionaryjo and someone who I'm blanking on. Then I went upstairs to register and talked to a bunch of people. From what I remember, I talked to
buffyann,
obsessive24,
danegan,
deejay and many others. I know at some point I had a great talk with
akemi42 which is always fun. I went into the Welcome panel and then saw the great 10 year VVC retrospective that featured vids from each year of VVC that have never been shown before at the con. The next Riot Girls vidshow/quiz panel was super hard but I had to go with the VVC Quiz Show because it sounded fun and I wanted to test my knowledge. I was lucky enough to get on a team with
laurashapiro,
cesperanza,
joyo and
radixiscat. It was a lot of fun and I was doing much better with remembering things than I expected since I haven't watched my VVC dvds in awhile. The hardest part was remembering song titles especially when we had the wrong audio on vids and then had to remember the song title for the vid we could see but not hear. I had a great time and we ended up tieing for third so I was happy.
Then I had lunch in the con suite with
paraka,
redhillbones,
annalamode,
amireal and people I'm totally blanking on right now, sorry. I remember there being a fun discusson about multiple subjects, I think kink memes were involved as they usually are along with podfic. Next I went to the Photoshop for Vidding Redux led by
millyliciouswhich was informative and inspired a few new ideas. Then I went to the Constructed Reality vidshow which was really interesting discussing how vids create alternative worlds. After that I went to the second half of Nearly New and enjoyed seeing vids on the vidscreen especially If You Stayed Over (new gay source to see!), Bye, Bye, Bye which was funny to see with a crowd, Runaway, Friends and What About Love (SO PRETTY AND GAY). Then I stayed for Non-Attending Premieres which featured one of my favorite vids, Blow which was a GORGEOUS Sucker Punch vid. Then I watched the Sandy Retrospective in vids and got to see two of my favorite vids of hers, Stress and Blackbird again on the big screen.
Then I spent a little time catching up on the internetz in my room and then put on my last minute outfit I thought of for VVC which was my professional business type outfit which for me was in honor of Eduardo and Charles (it's hard to show a way to actually be them though). I was excited for the open bar and quickly order a couple of drinks while I ate. I talked with various people at this point including
rhoboat,
settiai,
raveninthewind,
sdwolfpup,
vonniek and saw
bradcpu and
millylicious in their awesome Tron outfits. Also got to talk to
jspencer1986 briefly about Glee and he looked so much like Puck. Finally the Joxer dance started and I went to go dance to it. There were some great outfits on that dance floor including
dualbunny as Batwoman,
sisabet as Robin,
absolutedestiny and
joyo as My Little Ponies. Some of my favorite vids in CVV were Born This Way by
akemi42, a fun True Blood vid with one of my favorite songs to dance to, Whenever, Wherever by
obsessive24 actually made me like Twilight by only using the Edward/Jacob parts with the perfect song choice, Hollaback Girls by
kuwdora which was the Sr. Chang vid I've been waiting to see the final version for, Dance Dreams by
bradcpu which was just soo pretty set to a great mashup, Tik Tok by
diannelamerc which was a celebration of Club Vivid and of COURSE, Smooth Criminal by
f1renze (who always chooses to vid my favorite things) which was a hilarious Jim/Dwight Office vid.
At some point I got decently drunk (faster than I expected actually) and had to drink a decent amount of water to make up for it. I had a lot of fun talking to people in the dancefloor and on the way to get drinks and like every year, I LOVED the atmosphere and complete joy of it all. I had fun seeing old favorite classic vids like Give It Up, I'm On a Boat, Closer (ALWAYS fun to sing along with everyone), If I Had You (ADAM! wasn't the same without him this year) and many others. After it was sadly, sadly over and I hung out a little in the lobby with
annalamode,
absolutedestiny and various others I was too drunk to remember right now. I THINK I went off to a room party...IDEK but I do know at some point I went back out to the lobby discussing Snape and Dumbledore parellels with
nightchik and of course that led to Erik/Charles talk. I also got to talk to
bkwyrm about various things which was fun. Finally at some point around 2 or 3, I went up to bed after as always, an amazing CVV experience.
Saturday was a mostly panel day which first started with Ultimate Vidsong. That was a really fun panel discussing popular song choices and why they work so long. And thinking of various fandoms it was clear that Tik Tok works for anything. Next up was Setting which was really interesting and I loved the format of seeing an entire vid, Ghost of a Shark (which I love!) and getting to discuss how it worked in a vid. Definitely helped give me more ideas and ways to use setting. Then I had lunch with...Next I went to Vids in Academia where people studying vidding in academia shared what they were working on and opened up the floor for questions. Then there was the Big Emotion panel which was super helpful in terms of discussing how to build emotion throughout a vid and coining the phrase of the con, "Don't blow your wad too soon" in terms of not using all the biggest stuff first but building up to it. People walking into the panel from the vidshow having just watched
fan_eunice's Marley and Me vid which had reduced everyone to tears as it DOES. Next up was Aspects of Aspect Ratios which helped a lot in making me feel a little more confident in my understanding of Aspect Ratio with very useful supporting materials. Finally there was Town Hall where I got a better understanding of what's going on at the OTW right now in terms of vidding.
Then I went to get dinner at the Thai place up the street which I remembered from last year as having the best Pad Thai and it did not disappoint. I watched the latest episode of Project Runway and talked with my roommates a little bit. Then I went down to Premieres to get in line which was when I started to get a little nervous about my vid. I talked with someone who I'm totally blanking sorry,
bradcpu and
buffyann in line (and others?) and finally we were allowed to go in. I got a decent side seat and talked to
keerawa and
akemi42 while waiting in our seats and trying to calm my nerves. It was a GREAT show, much like last year with a huge diversity of fandoms. My video, I Honestly Love You (it's a Glee one of course) that was fourth seemed to be well received with some laughs (I'm not a comedy person so I was happy to get a little of that) and a big aww at the end which was EXACTLY what I was going fo so I was happy. And then I could relax and watch all the other vids. Recs post will be forthcoming but I particularly loved to see the Intro Vid was beautiful, Eric's Song which was wonderful to watch Erik/Charles with a whole audience and May I Suggest...which wow. I knew it was going to make me cry because the movie did that for me and
absolutedestiny is great at that kind of thing but my GOD, I finally gave in 3/4 through and then it just totally wrecked me emotionally. As it did EVERYONE. I have never seen a vid that made everyone cry like that, even Lullaby back in my first years here didn't have quite that effect although to be sure there was various outside circumstances that played a part. But it was beautifully done and it was hard to recover emotionally after that.
The second part of Premieres was also great and I was particularly blown away by Thistle and Weeds where I was a bit spoiled by the ending but liked it better that way as it was a shock. After that I talked with a bunch of people about how great their vids were and then went into Karaoke to see some of the first songs. It was fun to see
jarrow,
jspencer1986 and
absolutedestiny doing Motown Philly and then
jspencer1986 was happy to let
keerawa and the rest of us objectify him singing Take It Off (and boy did he). I left after Big Red Boat (which I always love!) to go to the X-Men First Class party where I walked into some vidwatching which was VERY fun. Then we went over the rules for the moviewatching, "Sobriety was never an option" drinking game. There were a LOT of them and when one is, take a drink when a mutant uses their powers...you're going to get drunk. Luckily we had
deejay there to make delicious specialty drinks which I really loved. I had to leave a little into the movie as I wanted to see the end of Karaoke for Sandy's Tribute as well as do my volunteer job of cleanup. It was great fun to sing Hot, Hot, Hot with everyone and feel Sandy's memory in the room and then we all got Mimosa's as Sandy always wanted us to drink them in honor of her which was a really nice moment for all of us.
After cleanup, I went back to XMFC party where I was just in time for Erik and Charles first meeting. I'm not going to describe the entire movie but let me just say there was a LOT of drinking and it was very fun to laugh and talk about what was happening with other fans while being amazed at the crazy slashiness. After the movie, I talked with a bunch of people about the movie and then went back into the 2nd floor lobby to continue talking. That's where I remember talking to [Bad username or unknown identity: svmadelyn""] about Erik/Charles fic and I got to read the latest update of the hookerau fic (omg soooo good!). There was other discussions with
danegan,
lierduoma,
jackiekjono,
sisabet and a bunch of other people I'm totally forgetting (blame it on the al-al-al-cohol) and which convinced me I need to read the Game of Thrones books. Once again I stayed up way too long under the influence of alcohol but it was SO worth it.
Sunday I was pretty much exhausted so it was a much more mellow day. I went down for breakfast and then headed to Vid Review. There I pretty much typed up the very large amounts of things people were talking about vids which is always fun. Definitely some interesting insights and ways to think about vids. I went to go get Thai for lunch but sadly it was closed so I came back to the con suite and talked a little with people there. Next up was In Depth Vid Review which helped with interpreting High Voltage and Thistles and Weeds and then onto Challenge vids. I really loved seeing the slideshow Kirk/Spock vid, Then I Met You with the audience and then of course there was I Swear...wow. It was the PERFECT vid to watch with a VVC audience, let me tell you. I was awwing, laughing, crying FROM laughter and it kept topping itself over and over. Classic vid watching experience of what I haven't gone through since We Built This City. Definitely one of the best vids and in my top two of the con. Also enjoyed the auction vids, particularly the Friday Night Lights vid, Burning Bridges at the end which thankfully I did not get spoiled for since it was just early seasons.
Then it was Calls From the Public and then talking in the lobby with various people which I can't remember right now. I went down for dinner with
cherryice,
lierduoma,
ua_the_terrible,
millylicious,
bradcpu,
kuwdora,
mresundance and
cee_m in the House O'Meat where there was vid discussion (of course), XMFC talk and various other things. Then I went to the True Blood party early with
mresundance and
deejay and we had fun talking and watching the last Indiana Jones movie horrified. Finally I come back to find a full room and we all watch True Blood together which was very sadly not even close to last year's episode. It did help a LOT to be around with people to mock and laugh at the show and somehow stand back the sickening Eric/Sookie parts. Always better to watch that show with fans. I talked for awhile there and then left to go see
jspencer1986 do a show of some of his music. He played some great bandom songs and some really heartfelt songs as well. Definitely fun and everyone should go buy his music!
After that I went back to the True Blood party for a little bit and then I went to the badfic party in the lobby. There was TONS of alcohol, food and much, much bad fic.
svmadeyln started it off with a good Erik/Charles one that eased us all into it. I made a yummy Absolut Pear vodka, peach schnapps, orange and lemonade drink to also help ease me into it. Then
medalline read a HORRIFIC werewolf Sam/Dean fic that was just too bad. A few of the quotes were said to random passerbys who basically ran away scared. Alcohol definitely helped a lot. Then I stayed for
cee_m reading of this anthropomorphic dildo J2 fic which there are really no words for. Around this point I got a little too drunk and had to go leave and sleep for the night.
Monday I went down to the lobby after sleeping too late for breakfast and hung around and talked with
keerawa,
serrico,
charloween and a couple others I'm forgetting. I talked with
cee_m for a little bit and then began the sad process of saying goodbye to the various people leaving all morning. For lunch, I went to go get Pad Thai for lunch and dinner and as always it was delicious. I hung out in
deejay's room for a little while watching E.T. and checking my Flist. Then I went back down to the lobby and hung out with everyone before they said there goodbyes while working on checking my flist and facebook and such.
Finally around 3pm or so, most everyone left to catch their plane and I worked on going through all my notes from the panels and vid review to check for spelling and meaning. It was a relief to get that posted early and I managed to finish before I left. I wasn't able to get my Premieres vid up though as I forgot to make an online copy-and all my source is on my hard drive in LA. I then left to take the Blue Line to Union Station and then took the train to Syracuse. The less said about that the better but I did manage to start working on vid feedback and on an Erik/Charles vid I'm working on. It was just hard to get good sleep as it was uncomfortable and FREEZING. I was able to feel good enough in the morning to get some more vidding done but finally had to just sleep. Of course the train was 2 hours late and I couldn't get a hold of my dad so now here I am waiting at the train station for him. But besides the transportation issues, it was an amazing Vividcon and I had an incredible time with everyone. Like I had hoped, I'm feeling very inspired vidwise and I hope to have a few vids done in the next month before Festivids begins. Only one more year to the next Vividcon!
So I'm back in Syracuse now. It's weird. I'm really nostalgic but at the same time, it's reminding me why I need to be in LA. Really tired as I got very limited amounts of sleep last night although I took a nap that helped a lot. Looking forward to taking some time off working and getting some stuff done as well as spending time with my darling cats (I'm dying in cat squee and cat hugs right now) and friends. I'm at the post-VVC point where you fill overwhelmed with the amount of con stuff and vidstuff there still is to do. So I'm working on it one thing at a time for now.
So I have a problem and I need some advice. Like I said, all my source for my Premieres vid is back in LA which I won't have access to for about a week and a half. All I have with me is my con version of the file, a m2v and wav file. Unfortunately I've tried to switch the aspect ratio and it is not coming out right. Should I wait and upload it later or upload that version right now as a temporary file? I hate having wrong copies of my vids floating out there but I hate making people wait. Argh so frustrated right now. Or if anyone knows how to fix it (from 4:3 to 16:9 from what I understand), that'd be the best solution.
It's interesting things being up in the air as they are now. Trying to get everything taken care of and then try to work out how best to proceed from here.
On Thursday after I posted, I went to check to see if there was any chance of getting on standby. I was five and they said there was four people missing so I still had a shot.
