Vividcon Panel and Vid Review Notes 2013 (part 2)
Here are my panel and vid review notes (part 2) for Vividcon 2013. I missed the Audio Editing and Perspective panels so hopefully others took notes on them. I did my best at hearing and typing as accurately as I could but sometimes people had quiet voices or I couldn't type fast enough so these are not perfect transcriptions especially as they are not completely proofread. If you see something and want it corrected (or credit), feel free to let me know as I'd love for it to be more accurate.
Real Person RPF
-i want to make more documentary and reality show vids, i watch the J2 vid on repeat when im sad, there’s unique challenges for vidding real people, huge range, actors, musicians, reality shows, competitions, documentaries, sports (don’t forget hocky), there’s us like fans, tik tok by dianne and lizbet
-What is Source?
-if you’re vidding Survivor, SYTYCD, behind the scenes lord of the rings, you have visual sources from ahem sites/legal places but when you get into actors, etc, it gets terrifying and exciting, talking about a broad range of things, print interviews, covers of magazines
-hocky fandom: deliberately package individual characters, blackhawks video has game footage, promotionals, conventions, blackhawk tv, skits, interviews, commercials, let 5 year old do interviews (so kid fic), make their own vids
-YOUTUBE, comic con, upfronts, other cons, tumblr, actual interviews, social media, photographs, press circuit,paparazzi, twitter, FB, record social media, entire vid out of mischa's twitter
-a lot of celebrities have vine, make videos of themselves, will post on LJ/DW ways to get high def vids for YT, etc, keepvids and derpy, helped get footage off of blackhawks site, streaming video in general, there’s several methods
-i got old school video downloader, record it as its streaming, wondershare and other programs, screencaps
-google chrome addon that will take video of entire scroll of website
-scary for non interviews because you have to get creative, even for reality shows, we get a lot of static camera, lots of interviews, reused footage, not always easier
-did stormchasers vid, when anything cool and exciting happened, the camera people are like, im not paid enough and get shots from miles away, we run into that not enough dynamic source problem, bring in other stuff to make it more interesting
-song choice and cutting, can cut faster and make things that are boring look more exciting
-difference because there’s little expectation, no rules, wide variety of options whereas buffy vid will just have buffy and if there’s external footage, its a harder option
- a lot will bring in external audio source but for RPS vids, its really charming, just looking at person its not as jarring
-bringing in outside sound, j2 vid and then they would talk and couldn’t hear it, be really careful with audio mixing so turn down music down so can hear, be careful with audio from cons
-try listening to vid through speakers while someones in a room with a hair dryer, will help you see if sound is okay, come find absolutedestiny
-bringing in audio, cant stand it usually but with the real person source, can set up narrative for vid because source can be ambiguous, just a little bit can help show what you’re trying to stay
-using different quality source, sometimes doesn’t look as good
-nicky's piece of me vid, thrown when it gets to paparazzi footage, we see the stark contrast, it is a visual adjustment
-as a viewer im much more forgiving with real source vids, it would mess up the viewing experience otherwise but i kind of expect it
-itll work fine on small screens but less big screens, you can have it be smaller in frame, big version blurred and smaller better quality in middle
-effects, asolat put in hearts, can play with it like what sdwolfpup did, the pictures move with zooming in, bouncing around, never really feeling like its static
-how to make the footage dynamic?
-have the song tell the narrative of the story, be on pace with the song
-song is projecting their love story, every look and every impression takes a whole new meaning to the lyrics since there’s no story with the source
-constructed reality because you have to take clips out of source rather than relying on clips to provide the narrative
-hardest thing is not to have a narrative, difficult to change your narrative, help people follow the story
-song choice is big
-use text, whether its title cards or print interviews, showed this arc playing game four times, didn’t expect it was from four seasons unless you didn’t show the title cards, im a narrative person and thats how my brain works, i have 38 seconds to show a season, how can i show this, i had too much information but a lot you don’t have enough
-i had motiony footage for SYTYCD but early seasons weren’t as good, hard to make a narrative out of people dancing, im just going to use the shows narrative, it worked for people because they know that narrative,
-narrative is created by the editors, not on the show, drama was created out of 30 seconds, they pick out particular things and make it big
-a lot of times there are existing narratives...sometimes there are conflicting narratives
-problem with sports: they can become very insular videos, the things that people love don’t show in the video, you don’t see the meaning behind it
-not necessarily a bad thing, it can be great, we're singing I wanna know, lockout squee, i miss you, in two years, that vid will still be cute and fun but new vidders wont get the context
-the vidder can expect we know what they were saying if cant hear audio, it was made for j2 community, consideration of audience, if you're okay with singing to the choir
-i made a stormchasers vid, when looking for dynamic footage, in a fictional setting bad stuff can be fun but in a real setting, its depressing, this is real peoples houses that tornados are taking out, i didn’t put them in and i think it was the right decision
-cappy made King Rat, very disturbing war footage but the context for the vid was highly politicized, it was meant to shock you, think about the consequence of war
-vidshow was mostly happy happy joy joy, if you’re finding negative RL footage, it can be exploitative, is it okay to use
-is it okay to show real blood all over the place but in a hockey context
-depends on purpose of the vid, hockey is brutal and bad sport then show it but if hockey is fun then maybe not, what vidder finds acceptable
-this question has been going on for a very long time but not in vidding context
-public vs. private footage, i don’t know you or dogs name but weird to know what you like on your dog's pizza
-someone in RL knew him in grad school, felt bad, talking about them and possibility of them or someone they know, more possible with less popular people versus actors, do we make vids private or do we not vid something
-depends on the person and level of public knowledge, if its in public eye, you don’t have to keep that private
-if you create a real person dies and footage is available, wheres the ethical line?
-originally my stormchasers vid was in show but one of the guys in vid was killed which was the same thing that showed in the vid, i had to pull the vid from the vidshow, i think i made the wrong decision, it fit in the show better
-i know people who lock all their RPF fic, its a personal use, not right/wrong, personal comfort levels
-doing anything with RPF, there’s a risk that you’ll find out that something changes and you feel bad that you made the vid since canon continues
-the effect you want to have on your audience, who is your audience, if you’re a nascar fan you’re used to cars crashing into walls but a normal person would freak out
Fancy Credits
-scale of fanciness: static text to amv, compositing, plugins, 3d models, then basics: text movement, blurs, overlays, tracking specific motion, playing with 3d abilities
-integrate text with video, can do it with premiere but its not worth it
-there are a million tutorials for after effects, YT, creative cow, search for effect on youtube, if you can put it into words, someone usually find
-concept: talk to people, watch other vids, need to know some options
-new composition, match video settings, do some keying in premiere, opacity, movement, the way that AE does keyframes is a little different, you have project bin like premiere, have effects window behind that, AE has motion in bottom left unlike premiere
-add text, can learn by just poking around
-can easily change font size

Vid Review
All Star Muppet Revue
-totally onboard with the muppets, song choice kind of got to me, it felt very obvious, towards the end of the vid, i didn’t give a shit, muppets, getting back together
-the thing about the song, its an obvious song, its clear in its lyrics, i was basically onboard with it, muppets are fun, ive seen the source, know the song very well, tried to think a narrative, had trouble picking out it, this is super fun!, couldn’t find the story
-the song is not that deep, the muppets are not that deep, the muppets are very, yay!
-the kermit has made me cry more than ex-boyfriends
-we talked during song choice panel, website to find songs like
I'm No Superman
-the wonderful thing about this vid, you get the joke right away, but the coolest part is the hair flipping bit, you can see they changed places, it sets you up with the obvious moments and then it builds to the change in position, very very cool, so clever
-when i looked at the program, associate it with scrubs, idk if itll work, ten seconds in, ive never heard of a show called scrubs, a lot of dark superhero stuff is dark, batman's parents are dead
-i was sideeyeing this vid so hard and then, im having an emotional reaction to legos
-i was impressed by it, i don’t know batman, struck by the way the vid managed to allude stuff to a complete novice, its sulky batman in the beginning, i had avengers feels, wrong set of comics but the team, hes his own guy and thats awesome and then suddenly there’s these other characters
-back to the childish enjoyment of the heroes, batman cant fly, he really cant fly
-innocence to vid thats beautiful
Surrenderer (SPOILERS FOR VAMPIRE DIARIES)
-im not impartial because im all ghost boyfriend
-i really loved this vid, someone sent by accident, i knew everything that was going on, i knew alaric was dead, if you didn’t know, hes not glowy or transparent, i don’t know if it took away, i enjoyed it because i knew
-i thought the first half going, what show is this, i did like it, because i didn’t know the actual canon plot, i liked about 2/3 of it, in reality he dies and hes a ghost, he dies and then there’s flashback from earlier, i believe their in love and im very upset that he died
-he died and i was like ohhhhh, okay there was pretty stuff in it but im kind of confused and it really didn’t make sense but now it does
-alaric spends a lot of time dying, thats what made it confusing with the ring brings him back each time, then he dies for real and hes a ghost
In The Hole
-I thought this one was particularly cool so I thought it was the Victorian Wire, can see how you can see it
-isnt Ripper Street just about ripper street and the wire is...
-didn’t know ripper street but knew wire, made me want to watch ripper street, made the case that this is the victorian wire
-don’t know either show but now must watch this show, most effective pimping show
-loved non face footage, the investigation items of the time, there was crime back then, there was investigators
-for those of us who know the wire, there were visual allusions and parallels to the wire, bring the emotional connection in
Slippery Slope
-i saw this film when i was 16, it affected me deeply, this film also effected me deeply, it was very evocative, it was wonderful, great structuring, this was the crescendo of the vid and you’re like yeeah
-box is on fire, shes like shivering and freaking out
-im a pagan but i haven’t burned anyone recently (laughs)
-most effective movie vid in show, i had never seen the source material, wow this is the perfect song choice
-that song would not be effective for anything else
-on a technical level, this was one of the clearest vid for someone who doesn’t know the source, i heard the legend so i knew similar, shots of maple and dancing around so it set you up, the closing shots, amount of time spent was just what it needed to be
-it was a good con vid, good vid to watch in a dark vid
-technical level, nate has this ability to make static source exciting and i think this vid was successful
Past the Feeling
-i loved everything about this vid, one of the things Anoel did, they do not have the biggest budget, its so beautiful and dreamlike, all the storylines all in one vid
-so many technical aspects, song choice that worked for me on so many levels
-a lot of things i like about this vid, i love regina, i loved internal motion, it was beautiful, you can just sit back and watch
-i didn’t know the source, it left me confused, didn’t know the relationships, all ive really seen is one vid last year, this is quite vid, i was left with confusion
0she does that a lot, rewatch a lot, technical things shes doing it, how shes using the song choice, this is not a song i would listen to but it felt appropriate for what she was doing, i quit watching after first season
Hope on Fire
-this was the first thing that i googled after the show, i found it just beautifully, different technical quality, hyper realism quality, made the color pop, i really wanted to know what the story was
-i don’t know the source at all, the two girls who are the main characters are ?, same actress? supposed to be twins, then it sort of clicked that it probably was the same actress
-this vid benefited from the blurb, told me a lot economically about what i was going to see, not since joanie anderson and the x-files, see so much acting with an eyebrow, effective using shots of the actress conveying the emotional information
-song choice helped with the build, one of the sources i wanted to watch before the con, just trying to piece together the story you do come up with something
Stuff Is Way
-perfect song choice, works perfectly with disjointed, no such thing as beginning and end, you are confused, vid hit that perfectly on the nail, i loved this
-it felt very much like living through the experience, you felt it in your head, it put you in characters head
-i cant tell you if one guy or five, disjointedness of clips and song worked really well
-ive also never seen the movie, looked like disjointedness for me, not faceblind but couldn’t tell who they were
-burned out on memento awhile ago, didn’t pull in an emotional connection which was important, guy pierce isnt doing anything for me
-made me think of movie vids, made me feel what it was like to be him, what is a movie vid, not just recontextualizing but altering the experience, danger in movie way, could work inside of pimping, wicker man did well, this vid does in a different way
-lots of vids that summarized movies, other ones...make you aware of disjointedness and made you uncomfortable about it, a lot of parallelism, wire/ripper street, some more successful and some less
When I Ruled The World
-dual pov slash vid, when i got this vid to watch, i got 1:28 into it, watched all of person of interest, if you want me to watch your show...
-i thought this was an interesting and unexpected song choice, celebratory bells while the show itself is so muted, he pointed to ? its true love, you’re going to love each other and we're going to know about it
-i think this vid did that rare thing that informed me about the source but also told a story i could understand
-i also loved the sudden reversal, you could argue that Finch ruled the world now and not then
-i liked it but it didn’t give me a strong feeling of the pov or what the story was
-i don’t watch the show, i love how it had the years? going back, she used that to show what was happening in the past
-i love it when the show goes baaack
We R Who We Are
-I felt like it was a cute Lost Girl vid that Sherlock came in on
-more effective if two separate vids or one more source, multi but not really, crossover but not really
-admire the technical skill of making Sherlock dance, parallel play, next to each other
-what the fuck, there was a lot of parallel motions, someones moving to the left then to the left, why these two sources, why these characters, i didn’t get the parallels from the characters, i did not get this at all
-i enjoyed it because it was really fun, under a certain amount of sources it needs to be enhanced for them to be together, would have expected multifandom
-I kept getting confused, this is such a cute Lost Girl vid, why does Sherlock keep showing up
-this was the wrong vidshow, this should have been fun in Club vivid, wed all be going, that was so awesome
Our House
-this was a vid that left me cold on smaller screen but on the big screen it gave me feels, he had each family member connecting to each other, its a big dysfunctional family, they don’t look like what the family is supposed to be but then they touch each other and head on shoulder, my family sucks but I love them
-this was the movie i was watching when i had a stroke, i didn’t want to watch the movie again for obvious reasons,but now i do, it so perfectly captures what this family is like, sweet, childlike and not child appropriate, great distillation of movie
Graceless (avoided for Spartacus spoilers)
Supremacy
-when i first saw this, i was surprised with how much james bond in it
-everything about this vid was incredible, the song choice, the musicality, everything resonated with me
-everytime i see this vid i go: editing!
-it sounded like the bond theme, they had to have made this song hoping someone would make a james bond to it and the chorus kept building
-i really liked the title, the use of the letter M, the opening is very much about bond, the opening sequence is entirely bond footage, she would be important with M in her office behind all of that
-i really liked with the movie providing a lot more bond footage, i liked how she brought action shots to up the energy but the story is with M
Omega
-who hasnt seen fight club?
-i find it really interesting that you said this is fight club, i was more distracted by the spoken word, i was following more of that, tried to figure out what the word was saying and how that fit in
-spoken word was spot on for fight club, that was fight club
-i enjoyed it, it was a much better version of the ? brothers track, tone was a lot more effective than ?
-as far as audio choice, this was perfect to me, absolutely gleeful watching this vid, editing was perfect, applauding before the vid was over, nothing bad to say about this vid (wow)
-critique of the vid thats not a critique, song choice was really fight club, magnifies fight club and what i don’t like about it, interesting things to like about it, not perfect for that strand, really, really good vid that made me like the source less than i did, not that the vidder was doing something with the source that the vid didn’t do
Firework
-this vid wanted to be two different vids, dean/castiel or dean and charlie are bff, charlie is trying to teach dean to be gay
-i keep up with fandom even though i haven’t seen it in years, i was worried that this vid was going to ship them, really happy it wasn’t shipping them, it was a cute vid but overall it just made me want to watch all the charlie episodes
-definitely should have been two vids, muddled which was a shame because i loved pairing the source with the song, there was so much potential, get a really tight beta and that could have rocked
When He Cries
-Charles Bronson, who doesn’t know who he is: hashtag accurate
-never seen x-files but i instantly got that joke, picture at the end helped get that
-master of comedy vid, knows how to make the joke
-brilliant ways of getting joke, wisconsin joke, always on board at laughing at mulder but wisconsin left actual shrieking
-comedy vid? that was the show
-was i supposed to laugh? oh its barkley, yeah
-angry because i hate mulder so much, fuck mulder...i see where shes going
On Top of the World
-super cute vid, my issue was with the song, the song had emotionally in it, editing didn’t hit enough on the beats, top of the world eh, wanted to have transported feeling and i just wasn’t getting it
-want to see the movie
-i had strong feelings, hard to tell so i was like ohhh
-did a good job working around the issues and she was able to show the fun and joy
We're All Missing Mama
-independent ingredients, wouldn’t never seek out, found it fascinating, intrigued about silent movie, what
-movie got creepier and creepier, hit orphanage line, serial killers
-this is going to be shocking coming from me, i was really happy to see old source, i really hoped the vid would be good, the vid was wonderful, i loved the work with adding overlays, adding effects, liked the work adding the titles in, don’t put talky face but can put titles, loved the opening and how she closed with it, i love this with all of my heart
-i love what you said about serial killers, having watched OUAT, don’t go with him omg
-darling family becomes mother to all of them, this is happening at the end, not in the disney version
-there is a bunch of text, text and lyrics don’t really work for me but didn’t find it distracting, actually kind of surprised
Cosmic Love
-jason's hot
-yeah
-i really loved the source, liked this song, felt the pacing was somewhat off, worked better with dark room, more surreal, good job of summarizing the story
-no trouble following whats going on, like the epic feel, it needs to be loud
Sorrow
-hard for me to parse out the story
-i didn’t really get a narrative, i had a lot of emotions because of all the images it had, now having seen the source, i like it even more
-i have not seen the source, i was left very confused from fannish osmosis, very few faces, knew it was on purposes, left me kind of confused
-when i read it, the land giving justification for the rebellion that followed, this was the reason for all of that
-don’t know the source, moved me deeply, feeling of grief and loss, flow of music, everything was being washed away
-impressionist painting, shes a landscape vidder, she does amazing things with landscapes, the landscapes speaks, the landscapes is a character, story is being told through painting, deep emotional connection to place, what i came away with, who loves this land? the land is evident for me, who was going to come out, king arthur? i didn’t get who came out but i got story as character
Who Needs Sleep
-I really wanted to love this vid more than i already did, im a fan of the song and fan of elementary, it didn’t build enough, problem with barenaked ladies, you have to impose the building on top of that
-everytime with her waking up for sleep with the lyrics, wanted it to go somewhere
-love Joan, but i really loved this vid...
-same problem with elementary vid, seen the same clips over and over, same build, partly i haven’t seen the source, it was funny but for the first instance
-what i saw was so interesting, deleting her pictures, erasing of the pictures, what do you feel it up with, she didn’t want to sleep, who needs sleep, something else happening thats filling up my time, now i am feeling good about my life, now she wants to sleep, i don’t want to go there, i thought it was really cool
-i like your vid that you constructed out of this
Dyin Day
-this one gets me speechless everytime i see it
-hunger games for the adults, focus on district and poverty and how hard life was
-about the statue for description, kids roll into fire, why are we doing these things to kids (couldn’t hear)
-liked the vid in a lot of ways, felt like what reading the book was like, parallel miners are going down to the mines, katniss going off to their death, felt like was in character's head, miners going back to the mine, even after mining disaster still have to go
-i love these books, actors were flat, vid gives back emotional feels
-parallelism i really liked
Run Boy Run
-so i see the title, why did you choose the song, i love the choice, because she is forced to be a boy in the vid, it helps the vid to continue on in that vein, the vid hadn’t started like that, the vid wouldn’t have worked
-i see this vid, fuck yeah ladies
-i love this vid for all the reasons, i read it as bit of meta, such a hideous patriarchal culture, part of run boy run, these are women who have agency and power get fucked up as men do except gender different
Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
-these are the most incompetent people ever
-my life
-to me this is the ultimate song choice vid, Morison, picking this guy who is all on his own, woe is me, my life sucks, most brilliant song choice ever
-appreciated the blurb, it could be anything, it started oh my gooood
-better way, how do i put a towel on
-this vid got in, told you a story and it has a build
-i loved the title, i expected that kind of quality
-i loved the credits at the end, little extra punchline, i had my phone out, im not allowed to watch infomercials, ill buy anything
No Direction Home
-i haven’t seen lost, ive seen this vid a lot, 6 different stories, its all AU!, i thought Sawyer was a drug dealer
-this is a lot to fit in one vid, it didn’t feel that long, i liked it, i love lost, im nostalgic, on the island, rl, sideways, not sure if you don’t know whats going on you’ll be confused
-always 10 seconds behind, hard for me there but i thought it was cool
-AU but he gets off the plane when hes dead?
-i know Lost, that entire vid is canon except some is AU but not AU to the show, if you’re a huge fan of the show then you’re not confused, yeah this is Sawyer, the thing i like about the vid, no matter where you are, there he is, you get the sawynerness of the character
-stopped at S3, nothing make me keep going but now this vid has convinced me
-saw it but not a fan of it, if you saw it and ...?
Red Rain
-song choice, for Sonny, aww, im down with that
-considering first time i heard song was during the scene in the end of the vid and then i got it (was waiting for it)
-wonderfully structured, it was so clear
-i forgot the show, almost had a meltdown, ohh i love you
-watched the show when i was little, how completely shitty his wife was
-in a show thats nonstop manpain, very effective with the gunshot wounds to someones arm, more poignant of that, he was a wifebeater, he deserved it
-i loved all the little cameos
-that show is brutal you guys, game of thrones in miami
Captain Kidd
-i really liked the opening scene, captain kidd yeeah, the song was so flat and the vid didn’t really do anything with that, little change at the end, the vid keeps doing what its doing, the rest of the vid left me flat
-she may have made this vid to make me watch the show, i have soft spot for ?, i love the character, character came through, OT3 feels, loved the OT3ness of vid, thank you franzeska, im starting tomorrow
-it wasn’t particularly good character study, lot of what the song was talking about lyrically, that section worked for me, deliberate killing when duke is killing its for a reason, its not out of joy so i got turned off by vid so its not how i see the characters
-this vid shows you why you should go back and keep watching haven
-it felt for me like the song kept going on, they’d keep singing the first, second, third chorus in church
Some Nights
-i love that baby so much, there’s a baby, spoiler
-i love that this vid included ?, theme covered her as well, love her as well
-appreciated the team aspect, i like that the theme is you are alone out here but they’re really not, discovering that, feeling abandoned but they’re not they’re a team
-this vid was dichotomy between what people try to get you to watch the show and then what it is, tell you about all the great characters, its all very warm, not sure if im going to get it
-i was interested by clip you showed, the way the character come together, all the different pairings of these four, but you missed the pov
-i loved the i see stars, its the machine
The Polka Slayer
-hard time picking what to show
-Buffy feels?
-watching the end of that, familiar with the polka music, that clip, one man band, playing other instruments with one guy, thats a lot of stuff to cover in the last 15 seconds of the vid, it completely worked with the frenetic of the music
-i had expected a slightly different vid, a comedy vid that recontextualized, it was so funny, donna and glory, superstar moment, it was a celebration, i appreciated it so much, by the time you get to ? something you’re like yeeah
-i now understand why polka exists
-brad and milly's vid baby, all of their interest and strengths and mushed them together and it was perfect
-completely and overwhelming feelings (this vid broke her), the structure of it, the folk medley of it, the vid moves, there’s no sense of sameness, oh god whats coming next
this way that looked effortless but it was very clearly managed, superstar moment, touch something moment, vid about vidding, in the moment of touch something, other vid meta?, polka
-push you around, there’s a buffy vid, 6 buffy/spike vid to that, rodeohead feels
-such the experience of watching the show, watching buffy vids, perfect audience, knowledge is there, know the joke as they fly by
-more people know the song then know who charles bronson is
-still bitter i missed scooby road but this helped because it was the fast polka version of it and showed each of the different characters and relationships and it gave me buffy feels and it was awesome
In Depth Vid Review
Sleeping Ute
-watch the vid to see how it uses the source, the source was played with with some of the effects, with the joyless sense of wonder, that you’re not alone
-spoilers: shipwreck, telling the story twice, ship sinking, family is killed with the zoo that is in transport with them, marooned on the lifeboat with several animals and the tiger, tiger is last one standing, survive and go to island and tiger without looking back leaves him behind, the ship investigators hear it and then tells him the second version, was actually with other human beings, ended up killing and eating each other, he was the tiger in the story, we liked the first version, there’s a carnivorous island, doesn’t believe that story either
-what an amazing song, it had that mournful howling quality, conveyed that tension and desperation and survival, in the middle it that ? quality...
-does not know movie, i find myself just experiencing the vid, emotional journey instead of a plot journey, from last night and right now
-older man telling the story, appreciated they waited til later to show it, still struggling with the emotional content, in the movie it starts with older guy telling the reporter
-songs title: name of mountain in colorado that looks like sleeping human figure, carnivorous island is also shaped like human, island was flipped to look like mountain in colorado

-totally onboard with the muppets, song choice kind of got to me, it felt very obvious, towards the end of the vid, i didn’t give a shit, muppets, getting back together
