Vid Review and Challenge Notes
Here are my vid review and challenge review notes from Vividcon 2014, apologies for the lateness. I was one of the mods for In Depth Vid Review so I wasn't able to take notes but you can find some notes here and here. I did my best at hearing and typing as accurately as I could but sometimes people had quiet voices or I couldn't type fast enough so these are not perfect transcriptions especially as they are not completely proofread. If you see something and want it corrected (or credit), feel free to let me know as I'd love for it to be more accurate.
Vid Review
-what was overall impression of premieres?
-i like dark, a lot of dark, very concentrated forms of dark, lots of them all at the same time tend to be very hard, it wasnt an individual vid and theres no way anybody can plan for this because you dont really know what anyone else is going to send but that can, wow
-i dont know whats wrong with you all because i vidded dicks, i thought this vidshow was an interesting experience for because how personal stuff can influence your viewing in vidshows, last year i was in a terrible mood and i had to tune out, this yeah i was like ok, sure that was all fun, oh its kind of dark but its pretty fun
-building on a couple of things, while its true that no individual can know what anyone else is submitting, i will say that im not sure very many people have left a premieres vidshow saying, "im not sure it was dark enough", for me, part of the issue wasnt just that there was a lot of dark and i dont have the tolerance for dark, i want more gratuitous kittens, part of the issue was that it was very whiplashy, there was a lot of dark and then there was muppets and wendy watson, there was not a lot of middle ground, it wasnt just the dark, i had to go to a happy fluffy place, its like the show needed its meds
-i appreciated that there were several dark vids in the row, even just two because i was able to go there mentally, several points felt very whiplashy because i was pulled in the completely opposite direction and it would take me the first minute of the vid to emotionally adjust so my viewing experience of the vid was not given its due justice
-these were all big popular fandoms, there was a lot of horror, a lot of shows that were grimmer than normal, i think that this shows the importance of curation, because of the practicalities of running vividcon, we've never really had the ability to curate the show, we're vidders right, we understand the importance of editing, the effect of editing on pieces of footage, thats kind of what we do, oddly premieres is the thing we cant edit, putting clips after another affected other vids like clips do in a vid, for instance the way the show was structured made vids that otherwise i would have had a very different reaction to, im seeing close encounters and im seeing child harm, which is not what i think about, i love that movie, i grew up with that movie, i yelled at poor nate, it wasnt a happy muppets vid, it was jim henson is dead (in fairness he is dead), not in my house hes not, we know this as vidders, the clip on either side of a clip can change the meaning of a clip so now i want to watch all these vids separately like one a day
-this shows how you can use a title sequence to separate your vid from what came before, there was an emotional whiplash, the light vids were very fluffy so there wasnt much middle ground, i think we all understand the djs had a limited ability to separate the emotions, as vidders we never know where theyre going to put your vid
-i know my taste in mixing media is different from other people, i cant listen to an album without zoning out because it all sounds the same, i really loved the ordering of vids in the show, i never felt like it was very depressing, im just going to go and cry now, the tone did keep changing and that kept me paying attention, i really appreciated it was this way this year even though it was a little unusual
-i know most of you know kuwdora and rhoboat, they couldnt be here this year, they thought the vids were really strong, they thought the ordering was really great, they wanted to tell everyone that they did a really good job
-as we all know this is about the vid not the vidder, even though we're talking about the vids, keep in mind the vidder may be in the room and they put some work into it, keep that in mind, also as something i like to think about from roger ebert when i was doing film crit, its not what the vids about, its how its about it, he said film but we can replace vids really easily
-both creating these vids and talking about them afterwards together, this is a process of how we constitute this community, so the conversation we're having is a beginning, we could obviously dedicate a half hour to each of these vids and we dont have that kind of time, so think of this as a starting point for further conversations we're going to keep having with each other in all of our various venues over the next year
Fun Lovin' Criminal - Leverage
-positive, full of feels, great opener
-i dont watch the show, i felt it was a very successful vid for someone who doesnt watch the source, you got the camaraderie
-this is one of my favorite ships and favorite fandoms, i really enjoyed this vid, i didnt particularly feel it was saying something radically different from all the other leverage ot3 vids in the universe, but i didnt mind that because it was really fun and enjoyable and im like, YEAH more Leverage OT3 vids!
-it was really accessible, the vidder did a really clear job of delineating what each of their specialties were and then showing how they acquired some of the skills of the others and showing the rest of the group being proud of them for having done it, it was a really nice of team-y vid
-i thought it was a really good vid, i liked it a lot, i have a limited experience with leverage, my problem with a vid that has just one theme carried throughout and repeat, i always want them to be a bit shorter
-good song choice, the style of the music was appropriate to that character, ive seen more group pov leverage vids that were less focus on him, i thought the song choice was particularly good
-how did the room process lyrics and clips?
-i had trouble processing the lyrics but i often have that problem
-in terms of show opener, it worked well, it was an energy boost to launch us into the show from a great place
Two Against One - 2 Guns
-the interaction between lyrics and images with this vid was so strong, the repetition between two against one and im the one was just *shivers*
-i thought this vid was very fun, i was a little disconcerted throughout because it seemed like the music was going to a darker place than the vid was, i loved the vid but i needed to be in a very happy place to understand the happiness, the music wasnt entirely supporting that
-i thought the music was very flexible, i feel this way about a lot of music, you can bring out sinister or push it in the background, i really, really liked the use of motion and how smooth it wasm i didnt notice her use of cuts, was thinking about the three panels about structure, cutting and clips, it was very good use of, im trying not to say nice use of clips, the word i use was choreography, the energy was fluid, it was nice to see a classic slash vid, it was a very enjoyable time
-perfect example of i liked this vid so much more than i liked the movie, i went in and didnt like the movie, this vid was everything i wanted when i saw the ad, thats what i wanted to see, it worked for me
-if the movie was made just for us
-i was going to say the same, the vid made me want to see the movie, now maybe i wont, this vid was edgier and sexier and way more interesting, i think it was down to the song choice, vidding successfully to the song
-i loved the sense of story, i felt i had a real story, emotional depth of character, like reading a novel, i dont know if the film has the complexity the vid has, i was very satisfied on a writing level, textual level, having a story told to me
-this is what i kind of think of as a river vid or a flowing water vid, everything connects so smoothly and so well, its like youre panning over a river and you see things underneath but its still continuous and going to wherever its going
This Mother's World - Multi
-rough vid to take in, i mean that in the best possible way
-i think this is an example of using fandom to talk about something that serious, universal and awful, it was done so thematically and beautiful, spanning decades, absolutely awesome, i was absolutely sobbing
-i thought it was beautiful, it got me in a place of, not only universal, it made me think of this con is a female space, place where real life things come out of media, how often we use media to represent our emotional problems and to process them, this was the vidders real way of doing this, it was gorgeous
-visceral on every level
-i thought this vid was an interesting example of what we bring to vids, ive only seen one of the sources, it was interesting because i didnt connect with the vid at all, i might have if it was only focused on one person, but the story of lots of people with sources i hadnt seen, i had no reaction at all with this vid which is interesting
-vidding as therapy was wonderful, i thought it was unfortunate to use raising arizona clips because it made me laugh because just thinking about the movie makes me laugh, if you really wanted to make an impact, should have been slightly more selective with the clip choice
-one of the interesting things about the vid for me besides the emotional impact it has on me is the the sources that the vidders chose, some were known to me such as bsg, some were things i hadnt seen before, what to expect when youre expecting movie, i wonder how using sources we dont know affects how we experience the vid
-very appreciative of the warnings the vidder added into the description as i closed my eyes through the same thing, not a subject id voluntary watch, not a subject id look for, i did that multiple times during the vidshow because there were far too many subjects that i do not watch
Only The Good Die Young - Batman
-i on the whole liked this vid, i found it very difficult to visually process because of the clips, i thought about the clipping panel, jarrows comment he wished he had taken out at least 20 clips, i got what was going on and i enjoyed it, my brain was working so hard to process each image, i noticed in that clip, every word theres at least one cut maybe two, i think it would be easier to parse if there was fewer clips, it would have helped with the song choice, kind of iffy on it but a few moments where i thought ok ok, i wonder if the song choice could have sold more for me if i could have been able to discern the structure
-my favorite thing about this was the song choice, when it started i didnt know what the vid would be about yet, i love the song, the gender reversal was amazing, the use of that trope to flip it and catwoman being who she is and all the catwomen being who they are and the way that trope is flipped and the way that she gets away at the end and have more fun to live another day
-at first the song choice confused me a lot, about the minute in i saw what they were doing, overall i thought this vid was super fun and i really really enjoyed it
-i love the gender flip, i wish it had been better framed better in the beginning, even watching at home without distractions, it was not clear...
-timing of the vid, i was so distracted by the vid before it, it was halfway through this vid before i could focus on what was going on
Sweet Ophelia - Hannibal
-i had no idea this vid was coming, i was nodding so hard i hurt my neck, i am pretty into hannibal fandom but there are some things that piss me off about it, i thought this was fantastic, it said a lot of my opinions for me, yeah youre right, this is fucked, the season finale made me very angry, i really liked the vid from a technical and structure standpoint
-structurally gorgeous with the open and foreshadowing...freaking gorgeous vid
-as someone who doesnt know the fandom, i found the vid very visually beautiful although it made me not want to watch the show, good data for me to have
-i like gore in its place but all of this violence, i know what hannibal is, but watching this i was like, oh no, ill find something else
-she pulled some punches
-what i love about the show is it has a lot of long scenes, its kind of quiet, beautiful, then it has these burst of action, i felt like this vid went too far away from the show, it was thing after thing after thing, i wanted to linger on some of the shots longer, i think that would have given the plot a chance to breathe and establish more what was happening in each scene that the vidder chose to highlight
-i havent seen hannibal, i think the vid said something about what the show really is as opposed to, yes its pretty but is that what the show is about, youre taking it as the pov of the women as, it isnt just as beautiful as all that, i liked the fact that it seemed to display what looks to me as being one of the essences of the show instead of the surface glamor that is being talked about, i liked a different perspective on the show
Peer - Lie With Me
-i may be 12 but dong!
-i could not make head or tails of this vid whatsoever, i saw nothing that was particularly interesting, i dont know the source, i felt completely at a loss, the money shot was completely meh to me, perhaps you needed to know more or be closer to the screen to get the full impact
-the vidder was deliberately obscuring the fandom interest and it made me very angry, my reaction was very negative, oh its duke from haven, just like in the catwomen vid that there was difficulty understanding the gender flip, there was difficulty in understanding, i could tell something was being kept from me, then when it followed through, i got annoyed
-the sense of, it was pulling on something deep and emotional watching the interactions of the characters to play out
-i suck at interpreting vids where i dont know the source, not very visual, this vid made me want to find the canon, the emotional power intrigued me and i want to know more, not just because of the dick
-but not in spite of that
-any canon where the guy is that enthusiastic about going down, im there
Keep The Car Running -Close Encounters of Third Kind
-i did see that child harm element where i had never seen it before, but there was a lot of violence and anxiety that i dont remember in the movie, down to that song choice because of the driving beat, it was beautiful but a different side to the movie
-i really liked that she could bring out the joy and wonder and the terror because the terror is a part of it, spielberg sometimes glosses over the alien parts that are terrifying, she did a great job with that
-something that impressed me, it establishes an intensity from the get go but still has a build, it goes somewhere, the tension still ramps up, part of it is the song but a large part of it is the way she vidded it, its not that we were waiting for it to go somewhere but it went there
-idiosyncratic reaction, movie of my heart, at this point coming from mothers to ophelia to woman in the pier chasing the guy and running away from the guy, he gets to run away from the kids and go on the spaceship, wait why does richard dreyfus get to go, bye kids and go on a spaceship, why dont i get that, what are my options as theyre being outlaid for me, occupied me for rest of show, i made a vid which i vidded out of all the premieres
Myxomatosis - Bates Motel
-this is another example of source that tells me i shouldnt watch this show, but it was extremely effective at blending the film and tv source, completely effective in a, i dont mean this in a rape kind of way but i felt violated by that vid, in a, you did your job effectively, there was something in there, even not being familiar with the tv source, i was able to get in it, i had the emotion in me, i need ten minutes of rocking in the corner
-it felt like the song started in an odd time signature and i really really liked that, i loved the song choice a lot and i think it really added to the vid
-i love this vid so much, im obsessed with this show and it was everything i wanted out a vid of this show, it picked up on everything the show had been touching upon more and more as its been going and it and it hit it upon the head with a hammer or stabbed it, the psycho inclusions were really effective, the song choice was perfect because it was all over the place like Norman
-i hadnt heard of the source and i hadnt seen psycho, i had to be told about it afterwards, with no familiarly, this vid was amazingly effective for me, clearly told the story even though i didnt know what it was, it laid it out for me, beautifully and hauntingly, i really appreciated how clear it was
-i agree, it was fantastic, it made me want to see the show so i guess im a little different, structure was beautifully done, i noticed that i had trouble tracking and processing clips, its much easier sitting from this distance, cutting was easier to process from further away
Carries On - Jim Henson
-i loved this vid, i loved the way that it works with different sources, different creations of my childhood, very moving, very personal
-saw an early draft and we discussed and argued how to do the last portion, it was a slow emotional build, it took awhile to hit that tears point, its about carried on, i wanted to see more post death stuff, children today still enjoying sesame street, this will carry on, his legacy is not going anywhere, not going away
-i loved this vid, i love how it worked on two levels, i loved how it worked with the humans creating all of this, the world where the muppets are real and people love muppets and the muppets love them (aww), dual level worked for me, in terms of the context, the larger human world context where we watch vids and the fact that this is sitting in the middle of this grimdark show, the real world context made me anxious, in the last year ive seen a lot about stuff about pros behaving badly like marion bradley which would have crushed my soul if i knew, part of this vid made me go, i hope theres nothing bad about jim henson, i love this vid
-first of all, awwwwwww, more coherently, as much as i love the muppets, i have aversion to behind the scenes stuff, no hands up their butts, kermit is kermit, it worked in this context, it all was brought together very beautifully, you have the in show and the out of show and it was lovely
-i had to mention the irony of nate making the muppet vid and not the horror vid
Killers On The Run - Bonnie and Clyde
-this vid was an effective pimping vid for me, i had no interest in this source at all before watching and now i am all over it
-it made me very curious, i saw a million promos and then the reviews were not that good, hmm i might need to revaluate
-i really liked the use of created motion, the added zooms, the vidder knows its an available tool in their toolkit and they also know when to use it, another layer of emotion and action
-the emotion and the action for me, i felt like i was back, like in highlander, expected amanda and duncan to go down the road, i forgot what i was watching for a minute
-i spent the entire vid waiting for THE shot, by the time i realized it wasnt there, i then didnt think it was necessary, we knew it what happened, waiting for it, waiting for it, not the shot but the results
-the song choice, bonnie and clyde song being used, layering the bonnie and clydeness of it all
Bones - Luther (notes not complete)
-i have a lot of fannish osmosis, pet psychopath, it made me happy, it made me want to read about luther, his stuff about his devolving mental state, it was so gorgeous and worked well for me
-i loved the structure, it was very menacing, i didnt know she was...the sort of shadowing, the ghosting, i dont know what it was about it but it pulled me out
Trouble - Despicable Me
-i adore this movie, i did love that it wasnt just look how cute this was, beautiful build of what trouble meant, where grue started and where grue ended, trouble meant different things, listening to the audience react, when he was catching up with dexter having kidnapped these girls and theyre like *gasp*, ooh and i was like, yess this is what these movies are
-what a great vid to have in the middle of all this, right?
-thank you vidder, i could be genuinely happy and boppy and laughing and ahhh
-thank you for saturated color (laughs), this vidshow was dark on multiple levels
-(mod) i watched it in bits and pieces over the course of several days, so the impact, the pick me up clips wasnt as powerful as it was last night, last night it felt ahh, the vid makes me want to know the source, very effective enticement
-so many different things to hug, including the vidder
Losing My Religion - The Hunger Games
-theres a point in the song where katniss is rising to the battlefield and it sounds like the song is about to rise, about to get explosion of song and it doesnt, it doesnt give you that release and drives the knife in deeper
-i thought the song choice was fucking brilliant, we all know the original so well, the cover was so well chose, it was so beautiful, would put in song choice vidshow, do this
-i know the original song, imprinted on a sandbaggers vid to it, looking at this list i thought, no way i can appreciate because of this other vid but it was gloriously done, the slowness was amazing, i went back and forth on whether i felt the repeated return to rue, at first i found it, i want you to move on, ive seen this, i dont want to come back to it, but she kept coming back to it, it worked better for me on rethinking, i did not expect to me moved as much as i was, i found it incredibly powerful, the slowness, vidders are fond of fast clips that slowness can really be powerful
-song choice, rem fan from way back, i love this song, i think its a great choice for the source matter, the fact that a cover was chosen with a female voice tightened the pov to an extent that was powerful
-one thing the vid did really well that the movie missed because its not a book, everything in book was in katnisses head so you get how much being in the games affected her, see PSTD and how traumatized she was, how she vidded the books and not the movie and i really appreciated that
-coming back to primms shirt being untouched, thats what started everything, i just loved it
Windmills of Your Mind - Captain America: The Winter Soldier
-the way this vid used cam footage, since the dvd quality footage didnt come out, framing it as hydras own cam footage gives it a reason to be cam footage
-i liked the use of song, style and movement, it gave it a ? just in how the song functioned, i liked the vid as a whole, i liked the song choice especially, gave a whole extra layer for me, very effective because there is a sexiness in being a spy, in the way this was filmed and framed
-this is an example of everybody is different and cant please everyone, losing my religion cover worked for me, with this cover, i grew up with windmills on my mind, for fifty years there was one driving song, but for this one there was something about the beat of the song that was off, something about it where i kept getting distracted, i wanted to love it but i couldnt connect at all
-i had the opposite reaction, i knew the original version, this cover was sort of edgy, that worked for me with the visuals with the unsteadiness of the film, adding more darkness and anxiety, using the cover worked while using the original would have allowed me to relax too much
-framing with the post mortem at the beginning set me up for a different tone and structure, took me a long time to get into because it was like sultry, why are we doing a sexy post mortem, at the end, we have these losses, bookending set me up differently
-word oriented, assumed it would be a bucky vid, the tone of the music worked for me but from hydras pov, i dont understand how the lyrics worked
Good Man - Hercules
-awwww
-I love this vid, old school classic slash vid but with modern music
-i loved the theme throughout of charmax's devotion, ive seen a lot of vids for this source and because it is what it is, a lot of them are humorous and flat out camp, it wasnt serious but it was very sincere and heartfelt and showing emotional connection that they do have, teasing it out of the source, incredibly well done
-i also connected to the vid devotion, ive seen a lot more xena than hercules, this was the slashiest hercules vid ive ever seen, i dont know how much was added innuendo and how much was source but it was intense
-one of the things was the different layers of love, the love the two characters had for each other and the love the vidders had for the source, it was warm, i really appreciated that, the characters go on a journey of, these were some good times and bad times, it wasnt just one emotional thing
-there was a cat and a baby and a cat and baby
-i have a strong personal attachment to the song, concerned i wouldnt be able to couple that with hercules which i dont have emotional investment with, wasnt sure if it would work, i projected my own deal onto them, he IS a good man, i see a kitten and it looks like my cat, it was nice seeing that vid being made, it was ironic coming from vidders considering their other vids in the show
-what i appreciated was the color palette, that made me happy the gold that was predominant after all the dark choices that we had, it caught my eye, brought me in, gave it a feeling of wonder that we experienced, the moving to that tone, want to thank the vidders that made sure the color palette worked
Might As Well Be - Star Trek (multiple)
-this vid has forever changed the way i think about holograms
-the vid should have been made years ago, i feel that the hologram and the hologram deck is the dark world corruption, i liked the concept of the song, oh happy song right right, omg i love this contrast, this is a miserable existence for these people and i love that contrast, i was sucked into it by that, im not sure if the last line at the end was necessary but im not sure
-i think i had too much disconnect between the song and the source, it was just too happy for me to get into the despondency they were trying to show, it felt like the vid needed to be a minute shorter, they had already told their story and it was done, so thats where i went with it, either song choice was different or the stories had been folded into it in a different way that it might have been more effective for me
-it was a melancholy song to me, not a happy one
-for a familiar source, it was good to see a radically different pov, i love that, they dont show up often enough for me
-the peppy song wasnt attached to the holograms, it was attached to the human biological form, dont want to be offensive, dont want to say real people thats not right, heres this thing we do, roleplaying crying murders and its really not fun
-just about song, i have sentient AI feelings, i love vids that subvert the tone of the song, there are a lot of upbeat songs with lyrics that are sad, i really like that she did subvert that because it catches you offguard, putting on a happy face for something miserable, i like that
Me and the Devil - The Conjuring
-everyone knows horror vids are my jam, i havent seen this movie, im fixing that
-i appreciated the song choice, i didnt know what this movie was, song choice told me right away i needed to close my eyes and im happy i did that
-i thought this vid was just gorgeous, incredibly intense, went more intense as it went on, not a horror fan, subverted why dont they leave if theyre having these problems, they did a good job of establish the entire environment was poisoned and there is no escape
-i really like that the song has an urgency, you could see in the clips
-this vid is fantastic, the structure and she played into the menacing of the song and you felt more claustrophobic, she had so many wonderful moments, i fucking love that clip, you hear devil and the feet of the hanging guy, when i saw it i went, yesss, really effective vid and it was executed beautifully
-vid is easy to follow, i have a hard time reading unfamiliar fandom, was able to follow it, was very engaged, made me interested in watching the movie
-i really loved the way the song was used and choice of song, its a slow song, i dont like horror movies that make me jump, i dont think i could watch this movie, but in the vid it was urgent but slow, the horror movie moments with the dead body hanging behind her, the scaryness isnt the startled you, the scaryness is its been hanging around all this time, we didnt know it was coming but we knew it was there and that really worked for me in a way that jump scares never do
Where is My Mind - Revolutionary Girl Utena
-this particular vidshow had very interesting covers and remixes and this is one of them, very excellent use of this particular cover in terms of feels, started off kind of slow, it has punch of intensity, great, menacing bridge with the drums where you see fingers pointing and shadows in the back, extremely effective song choice
-familiar with original song, it worked incredibly well for me especially explosion at end, i love this source and shati and i are doing a call and answer with anime vids, beautifully done, it was so dreamy and worked so well with the visuals, i wasnt always following everything but i dont think that was the point and i enjoyed getting lost in it and the character moments, beautiful, dreamy, hypnotic vid
-this vid more than anything else in the show, holy crap, i really need to watch utena, incredible job of really showing off the beauty of the original source which is so beautifully stunning in so many places, wow i am not following this but i want to start watching the original source so i can start to, my impression of what i know of utena is its a good tonal representation of the show
The Mindy Project - Fantasy
-this show is the show of my heart right now so i was really looking forward to this vid and sisabet threw away my expectations and this vid was the best vid ever for me right now, i love this vid like mindy loves romantic comedies which is a lot, i just love the structure of this vid, its so beautiful at showing what the show is trying to do, the beginning introduces the romantic comedy so well, it shows how she tries how she tries with all of these other guys, shes kind of successful but not really, picked the perfect clips to show her character and the funny stuff that happens to her, she chose the perfect danny clips to show how he starts having feelings for her and the whole end, i was having so many feels, like crying feels, it was so, so great, i just loved this vid
-i am a fan of mindy but casual, this vid was so wonderful, the framing device of when harry meets sally is perfect because they use it literally in the show, mindy lives in a constructed reality, she is a fan, she has these romantic ideas all the time, to use as a device that to carry it through was so perfect, to see these moments where danny grounds her and tries to meet her halfway to make it come true
-much needed moment of uplift as the evening went on, when i saw it at home it was lovely but gave me more feels last night
Call Me Uprising -Dollhouse
-i never finished watching dollhouse and now im gonna, milly, i may blame you later but right now i feel good about the decision
-this was amazing but it took me awhile to trust the vidder, hadnt read the program and ive had some bad experiences with discussing dollhouse in real life, wasnt sure where it was going, now that i know where its going, i need to rewatch to know how i really feel, the vid is amazing
-before i saw vid, i thought it was the most useless mashup in the world, this vid helped integrate the lyrics into the song, helped me make connections
-helped mash up connections in echos brain, different narrative gets compressed there
-song choice, it didnt work for me, the music reminded me too much of doctor who, kept waiting for it to turn into doctor who, i felt distracted throughout the whole thing
-i liked how you get different povs for the different lyrics, i hated dollhouse and i have a lot of emotional feelings about it, i have to talk about it a lot, this made me want to watch the rest of the show and have those feelings again, maybe be angry again but angry because it had possibility of being interesting and vid highlighted it very effectively
-trusted twas strong enough that i trusted the vidder was going to go some place interesting
-i was converted in the vid, i try not to read the program, i was aware of being converted, when it started, yeah, this is everything i dont like and then later, yeah im going to watch the end of dollhouse, i was moved skillfully, the frog in hot water, it was forcing me, i was aware of the mashup, other themes came out of it, the driving rhythm became kind of dominant, i really appreciated how the vid moved me from one place to another by narrating what i didnt like and moving me from callgirl place to other place
Made For This - Game of Thrones
-when i saw it last night, so the point is, cersei and jaime love each other, havent seen game of thrones but cant miss it culturally, watching the clip, well that was interesting, but how did the fall, beautifully done, the bird, the fall, what does that have to do with the vid, im still at a loss, what i was supposed to feel at the end of the vid
-the image of that fall says something different to people who know the source well
-exact opposite reaction, familiar with both books and tv, building to what lengths will both of them go to to protect their secret, i absolutely loved it, it was a fixer vid, it fixed some of the problems with how the book scenes were handled in the show, song choice was fantastic for cersei, male vocal helped with some of her issues, beautifully structured, frenetic ending, im a fan of, it was well executed, not too quickly clipped, it had that intensity, had that fury, it was very well done, it made me feel okay about cersei and jaime, have to go process that
-right i did not expect this vid to leave me in a place of, this is a good response to patriarchal repression, rock on with your agency, i dont actually like that, the vid persuasively took me there, i mean, what are you going to do
-i appreciated where she cut the ending, clear deliberate choice, i really appreciated it
-there is a thing thats happens chronologically that we dont want to talk about
Wake Me Up - Sinbad
-where is this interesting show with a great POC character been all my life, right, great recruiter vid
-love this show, love this vid, love this character study, the warmth, the found family and the energy all come through, lets hear it for sunlight and color, i really like this vid
-the color that struck me with this vid and the places, its about a bunch of people traveling on a ship, i saw a few eps of the show, i was into the places they showed and how rich and colorful they were, this vid took advantage of that well
-big familiarity with the story, you just see them traveling but you dont get into the fantastical nature, there was one element of mythological monsters and effects, not sure how i feel about that if id rather have it placed throughout, or if i wanted to see it bam bam bam
-i loved the motion in it, the beautiful, great long shots, made everything feel epic and large
-motion inherent in source, not sure how much was added by vidder but i agree
-just want to respond to lack of fantastical monsters, the show isnt about that, about sinbad's sense of loss and about discovering joy and wonder and being a force in the world, and the vid touches on the manpain with the choking shot, hes under a curse, but it doesnt belabor it, its about the people and the joy of discovery and that really came through
-juxtaposition of vid and lyrics, i only have two hands, well shut up jaime's only got one
-loved the color palette, was beautiful, unfamiliar with source so wanted more lingering shots, wanted to see it better, wanted to get good sense of who they were
Requiem For A Dream - Requiem For A Dream
-gorgeous and throughly devastating which i think is an accurate description of the source
-ugly vid vidded beautifully, absolutely stunning and well put together, as the vid progressed, more and more disconcerting and horrifying, it was completely effective
-paralleling of the characters which does happen in the movie, the way it was condensed and streamlined simultaneously pounded home how devastating it is, particularly emotional affected with ellen bernstein story viscerally upsets me, having it all come at you all at once was brilliantly done, in the closing shots, is so effective because its depersonalizing, thats what happened to these people, they stop being them, their faces go away, thats what it all comes about
-beating the puppy at the end of ? -why would you say that -just so your face would do that - we didnt kill dogs this year (laughter)
-never wanted to watch this source, the way that it was vidded, you drew me in with ellen bernstein's storyline, i knew it was coming, i got pretty far, so you and me outside, behind this hotel, interesting journey to take with a source i would never approach, ever
Need A Little Help - The Middleman
-oh god did we need this vid
-i completely agree, not only was this vid amazingly well timed in this endless stream of serious and darkness, this vid is everything a middleman vid should be, so bouncy and happy, clever and cute, about the characters and their relationships, hit me right here, oh yes perfect good
-great team feeling, all the reasons why i love this show, (art crawl), it made my heart super happy so that was really awesome
-great recruiter vid, read a bunch of textual reasons to watch, i never found them convincing but im sold now
-logistical level, i felt like, you know vividcon, youve been here a lot, you know better than to put text at the bottom of the screen, (its in the source), i didnt know that
-im in the middle of watching it because otherwise i would have to say i need to watch this right fucking now, this is awesome
-i love the song choice, emphasiszes that team nature, you do need help, you dont have to go alone, youre not the lone ranger, need to have connections with friends to help you do whatever you need to do
-she does think she can figure out but she might need a little help
Frontier - Snowpiercer
-i love ba ba ba ba on a train vid
-ive actually seen the movie and im really glad i did, im curious if other people knew what was going on, she left out stuff to avoid spoiling, i liked some of it, but i wonder how it reads to other people particularly the end shot because she does not show you who makes it off the train
-can directly respond, ive heard of the movie, keep saying its amazing but dont give me a plot summary, my visceral response, holy crap, thank you for letting me know i need to run away from this source at the opposite direction but given that, too late to cover my eyes as i was already drawn into the vid, even as i watching this it was so gorgeous, all the way it flowed together with the train, it was lovely
-felt like a train, which is like what the movie is doing
-havent seen the movie, i got a lot of color and visual spectacle, really beautiful, each of the train cars was a different color, the journey through the grind, people being horrible to each other, finally the train blows up and they get out, beautiful pristine wilderness and theyre going to get eaten by polar bears (optimism!)
-movie is kind of surrealistic, tradition of jene?, not all just grimdark
-what impressed me was how much she did not give away, lots of key elements were omitted from this, if you think, i already know what happens i dont need to see it, you dont know what happens so i encourage you to go see it
Every Day Is Exactly The Same - The Walking Dead
-everyone who died in the vidshow came back in this vid
-i dont watch the show, i know the song, i know the general course of the walking dead, perfect bring together everything i hate about zombie stories and everything people like about zombie stories, perfect bringing together song and source and theme and all of that worked very well
-epic song choice win, i came into the vid of what i thought the genre was, the song choice and how it was vidded made me completely fall in love with one day this will be a post apocalyptic world if we live that long, we just have to survive and kill the people that we like not to kill, its very awkward, i love it because it was done so well
-watched walking dead, stuck it out and made it through, this vid was my reward because every day is exactly the same, whats not in the vid, i was bringing my own interpretation, children parallel especially carol, their children being taken away, got into the barn and i knew carols daughter would walk out and that didnt happen, i was left going, wait i kind of needed that one last dead child (laughter)
-i said, no one has ever come out of premieres saying, it wasnt dark enough, i stand corrected!
-as someone who doesnt know the source, so much strong story and character, i felt like i knew this people, reminded me of odyssey 5 vid, large cast of people with good economy introduced me to these characters and their individual traumas and psychology, on a story level, i met a bunch of characters, shared trauma of killing zombies was not important thing, i understand who they were and how they each broke differently
-not a zombie person at all but i got expected in the survival of the people
Happy - Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey
-if the vid wasnt working for you up to that point, it totally started working for you then and it was working for me before then if it didnt work for you after that, you have no heart
-science, science, science, science, science, science, squee
-i loved that this was about the joy in science, illuminated the line, happiness is a room without a roof, it bothered me in the song, its stupid, now watching the guy breaking free of his prison because of his intellectual joy, ahhh
-i love happiness is the truth, i love that with the history of after cosmos came out, all of the nonsense of it didnt pay attention to creationism, that lyric hit me super hard, yay all of the things that he is known for, this is not about what he is about guys
-his joy momentum of having the lead ball, so cute
-science is neil's fandom, he loves it so much that he wants to give it to all of us and now he does (hes pimping his fans - recruiter vidding)
-i sat there with a huge elated smile on my face, almost euphoric, motion tied in and you felt lifted, i loved the message, inverted happiness is the truth, HAPPINESS is the truth when you just hear the song, no happiness is the TRUTH, there is a war going on for your mind, the way that it frames that is, no science science science and everything else is stupid, no this is wonderful, its elating, it gives people pleasure to gain understanding of the universe, and its limitless, room without a roof, no upper limit, love the joy, as convincing to people as any of the hard evidence
-the way he used the animated and live action and the cgi, stunning effect, highlighted whats beautiful about the show
-i just want to reiterate, thank god this vid was where it was, wow we needed a vid where happy is in the title, after the other two where both were anxiety and high stress and grimdark, i could feel my body relaxing as this vid came on, ahhh release yes
-couldnt hear anything in the overflow room because we really were clapping because we were happy
-there was talk about having a thesis statement, opening was just perfect, immediately heard happy, this was going to be science, uplifting, joyful, tremendously short time, this person shows exactly whats going on
-he uses vidding language, he walks away from explosion wearing shades!
-first vid we placed in the show (laughter)
-no other vid could have gone here
-i really liked individual parts of the vid, when galileo drops the book and theres bishops there, when you line up happiness is the truth with veritas, recontextualized the song for me because i did not need to hear it again, world is a better place with more science in it
Challenge (Gift)
Chasing Cars - due South
-not even a pet person but...
-puppies!
-i never thought about how dief doesnt belong in chicago
-kind of personal, was 8 or 9 when this show was on and i loved dief, i actually had a dief vid i was actually going to make, all the emotional cues that i need were here, thank you
-hooray for unusual points of view
-i was sitting up here in this moment when it hit the shot of dief and everyone went awwwww, one of the most beautiful moments of this entire weekend
-good use of humor especially there in the middle, whole room laughed, if i just lay here and dief running through chicago being ridiculous, also what he did for fraser, was his friend and companion but also brought him out of himself and made him have fun and be sill, gave him energy
-the vid had great energy and a lot of that came from dief
The Last Snowfall - Frozen
-i havent seen the movie, got the impression that everything the blonde girl touches turns to ice or something, i can see how her gift can be a burden
-it made me mad all over again how her parents fucked her up
-opinion about the movie, i think the first half is much better than the second half, much more bold focus on building sister relationship, thats why i liked this vid so much, it really focused in on them, i dont even like the snow man sorry, i wanted the movie to be more like this, i wanted more relationship between two women, shes taught to suppress an integral part of herself and it makes her shut out everyone else in her life for the rest of her childhood, its such a beautiful thing
To Be With You - Pride & Prejudice (2005)
-confession: never read or seen any version of pride and prejudice (how dare you), ive read my share of romance novels so i get the gist, i really liked this vid, i could understand the storyline easily, it showed respect, growing and that is a true gift when they came together which i choose to believe is how the movie ends
-i love pride and prejudice and consume all version, i was completely not the audience because i loathe that movie version, sorry vidder, there was no way, beautifully cut and i sat there hating that version of the movie
-the gift: the relationship?
Back in Business - Framed (1992)
-i wrote down the lyric, i wanted to thank you for what you lack because you put me back in business
-this embodies the challenge theme the best by giving all of us the gift of a new otp
-i was a little confused because i like timothy dolton as james bond and the song to me had a james bond theme and i was like, i dont recognize this as a bond movie, that was confusing to me
-i had to sort through my bond reaction as well
You are a runner and I am my fathers son - Teen Wolf
-i was excited to see erica and boyd and i liked that thesis of the beginning of them being ill served by the shows narrative
-reading the description, i was expecting the other teen wolf ladies, thats fine because the vidder will have to make vids for all the other ladies, i want my lydia vid very soon, something that made teen wolf less enjoyable for me, how they treat their women, i was very glad to see this vid because its something that needs to be said again and again, please more ladies vids
-ive never seen teen wolf, ive seen stuff about the fandom, this made me furious and this reaffirmed to stay in the fandom teen wolf and stay away from the tv show (valid life choice, one i live everyday)
-i was expecting to be about ladies, there didnt seem to be enough about boyd, i wonder if their was some indecisiveness about it, i think boyd was as harshly done as erica, i really liked seeing him because he got screwed too, dont be a lady or poc on teen wolf, things will end badly
-reading the description, i was expecting a very different vid, when you talk about the ladies in teen wolf, oh theyre going to deal with the allison thing that happened, that didnt come up, it took me awhile to get into it because i was expecting something so different, why do we keep coming back to boyd because this was supposed to be about the ladies (betrayed by the blurb)
A Dream Within a Dream - The Secret of Roan Inish
-i was shocked to see a vid to this movie, i grew up with this movie, i dont know who else whose seen it so whoever made it, thank you (that explains so much about you), its a gorgeous film, beautiful, as someone who hasnt seen in a long time, maybe the narrative was confusing because i have memories that were incomplete, it was telling me parts i didnt remember and not the parts i did remember, i couldnt quite gel what was happening in this vid for a film ive seen
-i saw this movie a long time ago, have seals always been this creepy, i dont remember it being a horror movie but im pretty sure it was a horror vid, i was horrified and really upset at the selkies and scared
-i found it very accessible, ive seen other vids to this movies where i had no idea what was going on, while i dont know the linear plot, i have much stronger feelings on whats going on
-i thought it was accessible, hadnt seen it, editing was compelling, interplay between clips and the music was really beautifully done, it was a long vid but it felt it was accessible and engaging all the way through
-the pacing won me over, i wasnt familiar with movie, longer song of 5-6 minutes, i didnt feel any of that, pacing was very well accomplished
-i assume gift was baby on the beach thing
Running - Die Hard series
-in spite of being a die hard die hard fan (ohhh -i knew what i was doing), what i really liked was that it was emotional, there are other fantastic vids like radar, they captured that side of it, what i like about this is in big action movies they rarely showed the emotional moments of being in trauma, it brought that out of footage that wouldnt necessarily be emotional, i mean, this is horrible, people are dying around him, he has to torture himself, it was refreshing to see it treated seriously, it was well technically executed
-i would pay money not to see a die hard movie, i found this vid really effective, i really like the parallels of the sidekicks/companions, the people who are there for him and support him, i found it unexpectedly powerful, i didnt expect to be sympathetic to bruce willis, the structure worked for me there
-i liked the choice to focus on his grimacing face, in the movie its explosions and youre not really paying attention, but he is in pain, different kind of focus, he feels very human rather than superhuman, action film character
-i like the series for what it is, lots of explosions, running around, people dying, its something i dont have to think about and get attached to and then this vid happened, oops
-what i got out of the vid is hes trying to save his family, hes running towards them and going to support them
-on the gift theme, all in the blurb, if you cant give me love and peace, then give me bitter fame, that man can get no peace but at least he succeeds in saving the effin world and his family
Slippery Slope - Fringe
-wow
-when i saw this in the program and i saw the song, i didnt think it was possible to see something last year that i liked so much and then see something else and now two can live, there can be more than just one
-took awhile to win me over, such a strong reaction of last years vid, such an unusual song to hear, the further it went, the more confidently it went, such a good song choice even though i dont know fringe but i know by osmosis, this is well done, they can now coexist
-gift: it comes with a price
-she is the gift, she has a gift, the gift comes with the price, that was established with the bile shot, dunked in the tank to get through the other side
Grimm Gifts - Grimm
-i enjoyed seeing this, not expecting a grimm vid, im a fan of the show, especially the way the show keeps changing, i like the way the show doesnt concentrate on the white guy with the gift but other people like his partner, part of the show is secret identities and finding out, i loved how we got to see his partners journey from, theres strange shit going on, wtf is going on, ok i got this, i can be your partner in this, i appreciated using that pov
-i questioned the choice of the song with the MC rapper because hes so low key but as the vid went on, i really loved the choice, that song the MC is laidback and perfect for hank, when everything else is going to hell, hank is the rock that makes it all work
-knowledge is the gift
-gift in german means poison (ohhh)
Empty Nest - Kings
-i thought this was gorgeous, broke up the timeline, got these great reversals of fortune, the lord giveth and the lord taketh away
-side note: aftermath of winter soldier, surprised theres no sebastian stan in this vid because hes usually there somewhere(perhaps a deliberate choice)
-gift was probably, lord giveth, in kings, god picks who the king is going to be, all about how david is taking over, the king does not want that, the gift being the preacher giving that to david and taking it away from silas
-the song title being empty next, the whole father-son thing, is the child the gift or is the child maturing and leaving the nest the gift, if the child is taking over power from king who doesnt want it then that flips that on its head
A Single Man - A Single Man
-is death the gift?
-i was super impressed by this vid, two things stuck out for me, one was the color palette which was amazing especially the end with the contrast of the the muted tones of the snow next to his lover and then that contrast of the vibrant red from when hes learning to live again was super effective, then there was the sequence towards the beginning with establishing shots of the universe, internal motion is taking us from left to right and then you see the protagonist feet getting out of bed who is walking right to left, hes not in step with the world, hes removed from it, thought that was super effective and was very impressed
-i love this movie, i thought it was so well done, start out by establishing the gift his lover had given to him when he passed away, then him trying to come back from the grief and depression, still emotional over it, all about the gift of his life and the gift he cannot give himself
-came out of the vid much happier than i did coming out of the movie, in the vid it distills the movie, in the movie i was like, why would you do that to him right then, in the vid, its more like hes had his chance to come to term to things and to be in a better place, with death being the gift, he doesnt choose to kill himself when hes miserable, but it happens when hes content
