I love this show! (OMG what am I saying?)
Yesterday I finished S1 of How I Met Your Mother. Somewhere along the way I fell in love with the show and I don't know how. After finishing episode eight, I was ready to break up with the show as I found it generally unfunny and the characters mostly blah, pretty normal white people who I couldn't really relate to. And Barney who I initially loved came across as your average womanizing guy which gets annoying really fast. But there are a bunch of smart people with good taste on my Flist who really love it so I kept giving it a chance because I couldn't understand where their tastes could be so wrong.
And they were right. WOW! The episode after the eighth was actually the start of a run of good episodes that kept me falling in love with it (totally unaware). I was even getting over the laugh track which drove me crazy at first (I am spoiled by The Office/Arrested Development) because I can't stand people fake laughing at stuff that's not funny as well as the humor not being quite as brilliant as I was used to. But by the wedding episodes I was starting to adore all the characters and relationships. And the show began to play with time (which works perfectly with the premise of the show) and do some unique things like cool visual stuff. And I could really see the show becoming a lot smarter over time and towards the end even made me compare it to The Office which is saying something. The show is finally getting that repetition and coming back to jokes in unique ways makes it even funnier.
I absolutely love the episode where Barney and Robin are being "bros". Hilarious and adorable and I want them to be BFFs. Or more because it seriously made me think of them as a couple. Ted/Barney/Robin works for me as well. Ted is just so cute and I kind of really love him. Plus he's so pretty. That OT3 is pure pretty as far as I'm concerned. And Robin is really awesome except when she's being jealous and then she's reeeally mean. Good thing she goes back to being awesome quickly. Victoria and Ted were actually really sweet espcially that first day at the wedding. I LOVED Game Night with all their embarrassing storylines and Barney being crazy awesome and finding all about his past. I don't know if I completely buy the personality shift but I'll take it cause it was fun(ny) to watch. Life Among Gorillas was really great too especially with the Barney/Marshall interactions. But my favorite episode by far is Mary the Paralegal. WOW. I was OMGOMGOMGing all over the place during that not to mention the LOLs. It was so smart! And the plot twist was the best and completely unexpected. There was some amazing classic lines in it too like "You just insulted someone I hate by referencing something I love" (SCORE!) and the whole "You've been lawyered" running joke. And the "And this one guy wouldn't leave me alone. Talk about anal!" slayed me completely not in just they went there but OH the hilarity of misunderstanding.
And then there was the Best Prom Ever episode which was almost as good and wonderful. I love how they're exploring character's pasts and showing the different sides to relationships. I haven't been very interested in Lily (or Marshall/Lily) throughout the first season but this episode really made me like her and the past half of the season has done the same to their relationship. And I love how the jokes have become so much more character based. I totally called the "I kissed a girl" kiss and dialogue as well. Score! And then the finale was so wonderful with the cute romance of Ted/Barney and I was laughing so much at the rain dance scene and then was so happy with the kiss. And then the end tore my heart out and I was crying with happiness and sadness. Well done, show.
And WESLEY!! I know why he's there but Wesley *happy sigh* I've missed him. I need to see some S3 Buffy episodes. Also, FRED :D And when she was mentioning him indirectly, I was cracking up. Mmm Wes has not gotten any less hot no matter what his personality.
In other much more disheartening news, I lost all my Vividcon panel notes *cries* My mom threw them out most likely (*STABS*) or put them somewhere where they are lost. I have moved past my hate and grief (man, I NEVER write notes! Vidding meta is LOVE!) to general disappointment. I am really sorry to anyone who was looking forward to reading them and wish I had written them up sooner. This is not good news in my quest to finally finish my con report (which I'm still going to do, I swear!). ETA: Nevermind, I found them!! I never forget Vividcon (too much) at least. Still miss it though.

You must see the second season now!

I think the show definitely found it's footing towards the end of the first season and then it just TOOK OFF like a wonderful cannon of confetti and awesome. The second season is infinitely better than the first, because yeah, the first block of episodes do drag and then you get to "Zip Zip Zip" and it's like SNEAK ATTACK FAVORITE! climbing up your Great TV Shows List.

And re: the laugh track, they actually do not film the show in front of a studio audience, instead add it in...which I thought was kinda bizarre. But, I still love the sitcom-y vibe of the show :)

That's so dumb. I wish I could at least watch it live to make it worth it. But at least now the audience is actually laughing at things I find funny most of the time so I don't mind so much anymore.

And I somehow wound up shipping Barney/Robin right away, in a "They are both awesome and it would be so great if they hooked up" kind of way that was based on like two seconds of interaction, and then I just recently saw "Zip Zip Zip" and almost died of glee.

And OMG ROBIN SPARKLES!!! I *just* saw it and my jaw had permanently dropped to the floor. LOL and wow. Now that is crazy comedy.

ROBIN SPARKLES!! SO AMAZING. I still don't know how to process it. And now, I am pretty sure I have to go watch that scene on YouTube again.
Let's go to the mall, everybody!!

It's the kind of thing you can't believe actually exists. And it's ROBIN! I never would have guessed. I think I need to see it again too. Whoa.

Also, Barney/Robin are kind of OTP-able.

They are! I was surprised because I find it hard to buy Barney with anyone but with some more one on one interactions I could definitely ship them. On the other hand, I love Barney so much that I could probably ship him with anyone at this point ;)

I know what you mean. His awesomeness is just fun to pair up with anyone.
I secretly kind of ship barney/lilyno subject
Heh after the World's Greatest Couple episode, I can definitely see why. She was the last link to having Barney being easily shipped with everyone for me.

My comment will be a list because that's the only way I can reply without going nuts and driving you nuts.
#1: The laugh track bugged me a little, too, but apparently they don't record the episode live - they can't, you may realise, because sometimes there's laughter at Old!Ted's voice-over, and there are frequent flashbacks and things [which add to the brilliance of the show, because what other show has that, right?]. They actually record the entire episode, put it together, and then they screen it privately to an audience and that's the laugh track recorded. So. :D Something I love in general about this show is the way even the actors/characters themselves laugh at the jokes, which is so real, and genuine.
#2: The first few episodes? They bored me, I'll admit it. But I plunged on, and then I watched The Pineapple Incident, and I loved that, and I went nutty. :D This show is amazing. And have you watched the second season yet? Freaking amazing, I love what they do with it - it's constantly amazing, consistently funny, and the characters? Their backstories and character quirks, everything - the attention to detail and people in this show are what make it this great. It's not the funny so much as the people, which is awesome. :D
#3: YAY, YOU LOVE TED! Not many people do, it's kind of sad, but I love him. Maybe because he reminds me of me, a little. Also because he's cute. :P I love his relationships with Barney and Marshall, and Robin and Lily. Ack. I was whooping after the kiss in Come On, and then he sat with Marshall on the steps and I felt like crying, almost. And the music choice was magnifique.
#4: The love for Barney/Robin is overwhelming. They would be adorable together, yes, and I'm almost convinced they hook up sometime during the show. One of my other favourite couples would be Ted/Lily, which is as improbable as it is unsupported, but seriously. Ted/Marshall are amazing bros, as demonstrated with their swordfight, Barney on his own is always amazing, Marshall is a dork and he lawyers and I love him, and Robin is Robin Sparkles, which...is enough said. ;) I may just about ship lots of people on this show.
#5: Oh my God, let me rant a little more about the second season. Arrivederci, Fiero is freaking brilliant, probably one of my favourite episodes, Slap Bet is amazing [have you watched it yet?], and - just - the continuity! The awesome! The characters! I love it. It's genius, and I adore this show. Didn't think I would love it this much, but I do! Definitely on my to-love list, after The Office. :D
I am glad you love this show!! I can't wait for it to premiere next Monday.

The flashback are AWESOME and I am so glad they're using them because it really does fit so well with the show and is great at hooking me into watch it with the often crazy opening clip. I do love how the characters laugh at stuff as well.
Yep, The Pineapple Incident was when I first started to see the smartness and love of the show. I just finished episode 217 today (I love how quick it is to go through comedies) and I definitely see the consistent awesomeness. I am so thankful they keep looking into the backstories and the quirks, very impressed.
How can people not love Ted? I don't get that. He seems to be more of the Jim character to me at the very least in the end of S1 reveal versus Casino Night (which actually was something I disliked about Ted). He's adorable and he does remind me of myself sometimes. YES to the different emotions in Come On.
I would LOVE to see it if they went Barney/Robin. It'd be really interesting if they actually took it seriously. I don't really see Ted/Lily much but after the Christmas episode I will say that they are very cute with their history and everything. I basically have given up shipping with this show and have now declared them my OT5. Because you can ship everyone with everyone and it works.
I saw Arruvederci, Fiero and it was LOVE! Wow. So awesome in so many ways. The music! And the car which I kind of cried about at the end. And oh the beautiful slash from Ted/Marshall (!!!) to Robin and Lily to Ted and Barney. Slap Bet is definitely another of my favorites as the end will never not be hilariously insane. The continuity!! I am so happy to see that with the slap bet returning and the penny and just...so good. Somehow this show has shot up my list so now I am watching it live. Next Monday though? I think it's the 24th (I wouldn't have a list or anything...)
