Buffy marathoning thoughts

Still behind on commenting, once again. What I've been doing the past week basically is having one very long Buffy the Vampire Slayer marathon. I made it my goal to be done with that series as well as Angel by Vividcon because I really wanted to people to understand people's vids to it. After watching random episodes in the past, I hadn't been able to get into it and while I kind of enjoyed the season 1 episodes, they just hadn't been able to grab my interest enough. Only after watching S2 and beyond did I change and become addicted fall in love with the show.

It all changed when I got to Prophecy Girl. I loooved the episode, mostly for all the heartbreaking emotions in it and all of a sudden, I could really connect with Buffy and just understood that I had really fallen for all the characters. My other favorite episode in season 1 would be Angel, which really got me to like him (I still can't get over how young and pretty he looked back then) and even, dare I say it, Buffy/Angel. They're just so cute and romantic, I can't help but enjoy them.

So then I got addicted and watched the entire 2nd season in 3 days and fell hopelessly in love with it. It all came together, some of the beginning episodes weren't all that great but by this point I loved all the characters and their relationships so I just enjoyed seeing them interact. Joss is just so great with coming up with amazing little moments between characters and coming up with really funny lines and situations that I get a kick out of seeing. But yes, then Spike came and I was soo happy as he was and is my favorite character on the show and the one I've always loved. I do love him more ambiguous but it was fun seeing him all evil with Drusilla. Then came some awesome moments/episodes for me, with the end of Lie to Me completely heartbreaking and The Dark Age-Ted sequence blowing me completely away with Giles character exploration (and Ethan who is evil hotness), What's My Line being action packed and filled with good character stuff (and hot Angel torture...) and Ted just emotionally shocking the hell out of me. Sooo good. And then we got Angelus which was so fun to watch with him all evil and the Angel/Spike kiss (HOT) and all the heartbreak for B/A which just killed me. I swear, I was so sucked into the show at this point that my squee and love meters were going off the roof. Also, just have to say I loved the flashbacks throughout the episodes. The ending episodes were just amazing, Joss always has the best finales for each season, but really it all blew me away. Buffy running for her friends, the Giles torture, Spike alliance and that final sword fight (I LOVE swords)...I've seen it a million times in vids but it doesn't make it hurt any less when Angel gets his soul back and Buffy still kills him. Then the end just breaks me and made me cry so much. Man, I LOVE this show!

Watched the Third season in two days and it was so nice to see some of my favorite characters show up namely Faith and Wesley. Started a bit slow like last season but most episodes, even the ones I don't like so much, usually come up with some really great emotional scenes between the characters or at the very least, some funny lines. The Mayor arc was very cool, he was definitely an interesting villian although I still liked the 2nd arc a bit better (hard to top Spike/Drusilla/Angelus). It was good to get more background on the whole Faith story as well as I've seen some amazing Faith/Buffy vids way too many times to count so I recognized a lot of the visuals for their scenes. My favorite episodes would be Band Candy because I'm a sucker for bad Giles and Ethan, Lovers Walk because Spike's back (yay!) and I just adore the Spike/Angel/Buffy trio ie my new OT3, Bad Girls for the intense Buffy and Faith plot along with Wesley's hilarious introduction and Enemies because they COMPLETELY fooled me with Angel. Also really enjoyed Earshot which made me fall on the floor laughing when Buffy was reading Wes's mind and The Prom which although heartbreaking and I even though I knew Angel was going to come...I still loooved it and happily squeed when Angel showed up and danced with Buffy. Not as good as B/J but still incredibly romantic.

Then of course, Graduation Day blew me away (again) with the Faith/Buffy fight, Buffy giving Angel her blood (whoa), the coma dream and then the end...wow. Now THAT is why I watch episodes because I was completely with them, in that whole class fighting the demon, I just loved the whole group working together thing. Very smart move too in blowing him up and all even though I did feel sorry for the mayor with his Faith caring. Yay for ambiguous with some good in their heart villians. Heartbreaking at the end once again with the B/A action but it kind of summed up my high school experience with it being blown up as I hate my high school with a fiery passion and believe, like the show, that it is hell, so it was metaphorically significant for me to see it blown up and destroyed and knowing, I survived it. That's all you can do in the end and the one thing I knew I had to do this year.

Today I watched the first half of season 4 and thought it was pretty good. Not as much into the whole government/Riley arc and I do think some of the episodes fall too much into the demon of the week and too collegey type problems for me but the characters and their relationships are still great to watch. Reeally glad that Spike is back and he helps make the episodes for me. Just watched Doomed and my favorite part was the end when he's so happy that he can kill again that he's willing to switch sides and I just love his feeling. Plus it was awesome to see him in funny clothes, watch him kiss and plan to marry Buffy (yay Spuffy!) and be stuck in Xander's basement (now I see where that slash came from...). Riley's a bit boring for me, I still think Buffy needs more of an equal ie Angel or Spike, even if their love is doomed. On the show, I see three types of episodes: 1) big ones where all the huge events go down (obviously my favorite and includes the finales), 2) episodes where the evil of the week is very tied into the different characters, emotional resonance, usually has a *deep* theme and not many extraneous guest stars (second favorite) and 3) plots that center around a common problem with more guest stars and relates in some way to a main character (least favorite). The last reminds me of the Freak of the Week plots that I dislike on Smallville and Mystery of the Week on Veronica Mars. I'm usually able to tolerate it to a degree as long as there's some good character development/relationship exploration/season arc development that makes things interesting as well. In the first season, it felt like there was too many of the third kind and in the fourth, I'm feeling it as well although the fourth is better with the writers having more experience and all. A lot of times the major arc and how good it fundamentally is determines how much I'll like the season and it's proved true with BtVS as the 1st and 4th arcs arent as interesting to me and they're so far my least favorites. Same with Veronica Mars as the main arc in the first season was amazing and made the season amazing while I didn't think the second was very good at all and therefore didn't like the second season as much.

What I really love about the show as I've mentioned is the characters and relationships as that's what gets me in most shows although I always need some good, interesting, exciting plot action to make it quality, all around television. My favorite characters list so far: 1) Spike 2) Giles 3) Willow 4) tie: Angel-Wesley 5) Buffy and then Xander and the others go after that. I obviously have a thing for the more geeky type people (Giles, Willow and Wes) but I can't help that they're so cute and remind me of myself sometimes. Spike always wins though with his coolness, his honesty and his love to have some fun. I'm definitely into Angel more than before as I love the mysteriousness and heroic qualities and I feel his pain with the whole soul thing (never was into the brooding thing before but I'm warming up to it). As for Buffy, I was never really into her before and some of the preppiness and self-righteous kind of thing can still annoy me, but she's won me over with her courage and by connecting with her emotionally. I really enjoy the group scenes between Buffy, Willow, Xander and Giles and all the dynamics between them. I'm especially loving the mentor/student relationship between Giles and Buffy which is just so deep and real but also can be so enjoyable to watch. I just love all their moments together and am dying to see some good vids to them but I'm going to hold out til I finish the series. I also enjoy Giles relationships with Willow and Angel and even Wesley as they're competition together is too funny. As for Buffy/Angel, all I can say is: theirloveissotragic! I just enjoy watching it evolve although the beginning stages was my favorite up to the heartbreak of Angelus. As I said before though, Buffy/Angel/Spike is my OT3 for the show since now I love every pairing involved in it, Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike and Angel/Spike, and I love to see all their interactions with one another. What I like about Joss is that he makes it hard for me to dislike any of the ships on the show as in my own way Xander/Willow, Buffy/Xander, Xander/Cordelia, Oz/Willow, Giles/Jenny and Xander/Anya all have some degree of cuteness/likeability for me and I enjoy all the slash pairings (Giles/Ethan is my favorite Giles ship of course) available as well. One of my favorite scenes actually is in Reptile Boy when Willow confronts Giles and Angel about being so hard on Buffy and its just too funny for them to get taken down by Willow.

I think I'll stop there as it seems pretty obvious that I’m obsessed with the show. But if you weren’t convinced then last night when I dreamed about the Buffy gang all freaking night should be enough to persuade you. I swear, I woke up a bunch of times from vivid dreams where I was with Buffy, Angel and Spike on all sorts of adventures from amusement parks to Survivor/Lost islands to being in cars with them. Oh and it’s also MY show now so that places it in a special tv category for me. Joss Whedon really is a genius, why did I not watch this show before?!

Dammit, girl! You should've done this years ago when Smallville was out. I was actually still into Buffy then too!

I stopped after S4 though because after Bad Beer I decided against the 'following both shows' idea and 'going to focus more on ANGEL' instead. Which I was glad, because when it got to the Spike/Buffy thing... *shudders* I mean, it got better in the end, but when it first started it was just... it turned off a lot of people. I guess I would've argued for the show that it reflected how lost and angry Buffy felt but... blah.

Haha, ohh, the hellish summer we had when Buffy sent Angel to hell. Probably the only time a fandom actually got more active rather than slumbered during the summer. Lots of great fic came out then too.

Anyway, glad you're loving it!

I know, I'm kicking myself for not getting into both shows back then. And the really bad thing is that I could have as my friend was in love with the show back in 8th grade and I could have easily took her example and watched it. Arrgh. Oh well, at least I'm into it now.

Bad Beer was definitely one of my least favorite episodes and I understand why you'd leave after it. I was toying with the idea of watching Angel at the same time but I really just want to get done with one series before I start the other. I actually watched a bunch of episodes in the 6th season (a couple years back) and I do like Spike/Buffy and the whole messed up relationship but the episodes themselves weren't that great for me. I've heard that the fandom was pretty much split by that though.

Sounds like a lot of fun and yes good idea, I need to find some of the good fic and read that as well. It's fun though, loving a new show again. Glad your enjoying your Jdrama's as well :)

Ahh, you know though that there were two crossover episodes, right? Not including the finale (which really wasn't so much a finale as -- grrrr, I actually wished Angel didn't show up at all. I mean, to stoop so low as to compare their 'relationship' to Dawson's Creek!). I really liked the Spike and Oz one.

*sniff* Actually, now that I say his name -- it was his loss that I kind of lost interest. I watched when he did that return episode, A New Moon. It made me cry so so much. Haha, Oz was my first true crush.

Also -- haha, I'm not trying to get you into jboys, but I really think you would get a good laugh and thoroughly enjoy that music video I posted KAT-TUN - Real Face (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BEAFLJX6). 6 pretty boys in tight red leather and lots of hip gyration. Haha, it was their debut single too. There were 7 versions of this video - the general one and 6 variations specifically focusing on one member. The one I put up focuses on Kame, arguably the 'prettiest' of the group. I put the quotations because my personal favorite is Ueda (OMG DID YOU AT LEAST SEE THE PICTURE OF HIM WHEN HE WAS STILL IN HIGHSCHOOL (http://pics.livejournal.com/insomnikat/pic/004dtgwt) IN MY POST?!)

Yeah, they should never compare relationships from other tv shows, cause there usually is no comparison. I do know that there was crossover episodes though, always fun to do. Oz was cute although I could never really get into him that much. Sad that he left though, I know how those first crushes are...

I'll check out the vid, it definitely sounds good. I wouldn't say that I couldn't get into the jboys/dramas but right now I have a lot on my plate to watch so I'm trying not to get into any more things though. But yes, the boy is very hot in that picture.

OMG, that's so awesome that you're getting into this show! :) Reading this post brought back all sorts of fond BtVS memories. Especially the moment you mentioned where Buffy has to kill Angel even after he got his soul. The music after that scene was just amazing. I think it was a Sarah McLachlan song. Everything about that show was just so awesomely done in the first few years. Can't wait for you to get to Angel!

[identity profile] anoel.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm definitely loving it and seeing why everyone adores the show so much. Reading it myself makes me think fondly at all the memories. And yes the killing Angel moment was one of the best and just broke me. Especially with the music, it was a Sarah McLachlan song, Full of Grace and I loved it and how it increased the sadness of it. It really was well done, I was impressed with the show a lot in the 2nd/3rd seasons. I'm getting to Angel, should be there in at least a week but I really can't wait for that too now.

You must post thoughts on Angel, Season 1 when you can. That and Season 2 were great seasons :)

I will, don't worry :) Can't wait to see them! I love Angel now.
