So I had some of trouble at first picking out clips for my last vid and led to me trying to categorize some ways to do it. Here's what I've come up:

Lyrical:
-Completely literal
-Somewhat literal
-Metaphoric

Visual:
-Movement (external and internal)
-Color
-Effects
-Place

Narrative:
-Chronological
-Reverse Chronological
-Specific time frame (by season, story arc or episode)
-Limited Show(s), character(s), relationship(s)

Other:
-Idea
-Emotion
-Action

Obviously, usually clips are picked for more than one reason. Any other ideas are encouraged.

Sometimes lyrical choices can go beyond metaphoric to purely mood based. In my LFN vid, I could barely understand the lyrics; I chose clips based on what I took to be their mood and theme while departing substantially even from metaphor.

Yeah I'd put mood under emotion and theme under idea.

I know absolutely nothing about making videos, and some of what you wrote was going right on my head. However, I am on a search for someone to make a B/J video starting with the last scene between them in episode 513, using the song from Wicked "For Good." I could see that done with flashbacks to a number of past clips. Every time I hear the song, I think of them, but I know nothing about doing videos, and God forbid, I should consider trying. I will end up--in six months--with EVERY single piece of software available for movie making; every book, every magazine. Bookmarks to hundreds of sites, a bigger hard drive, possibly a new computer, a new DVD player and perhaps another larger LED monitor.

What I will NOT have--and what I will never have--will be a completed video. This is the story of my life, I cannot get involved in any new hobbies; there's no room. So think about it!
Of course, what I

There actually is a QAF vid for the song "For Good" so I'd hesitate to do it again. I got it from here: http://community.livejournal.com/qaf_repixed/10414.html if you want to check it out. I would always encourage trying out vidding, it's not as time consuming and product buying as it looks and it is the best hobby around IMHO.

Ooooh, thanks for the link. I can't wait to see it, I really love the videos; I was always a big fan of finding appropriate music for actions--when we were teenagers, our friend had a movie camera and we would make up some silly skits and Stephen would set them to music. Crude by today's standards, but I still like to see them.

I'm glad someone did it, because to me it was just crying out to be done.

I'm sure for most people the hobby doesn't have to be totally time consuming or expensive. The problem is me: my life is strewn with remanants of things that had my interest, because I always want to
own everything to do with it. I'm sure I will give it a try, starting with my own videos.

Of course, first, I will have to remember what on earth I did with the cord that links the camera to the computer.

Oh dear, my next set of cords will be a neon color!

I usually pick eps where i know there is character interaction between the ppl i'm making the video about and go through them silently while playing the chosen song on repeat in my headphones.

The right clips and scenes kinda jump out at me.

See for me it's not that easy. I have a hard time deciding what to use so I try to find ways to make it easier for me.
