I finished The West Wing. It is done and I did it! I love Josh. I love CJ. I love Toby. I love Sam. I love Jed. I love Leo. I love Abbey. I love Donna. I love Charlie. I love Team Bartlet, Team White House, I love all of them. It feels monumental to be done, more than for most other shows. Maybe it's the presidency, I don't know.
I am just so happy to have found this show. I wonder if I should have finished it earlier but I'm glad I waited, first because it is so heartening to watch after Obama won even more in the final seasons and second because it helped catch my fall after the shit that was Torchwood S3 (what S3? denial = zen). It really does inspire me and my idealism and how I want to be a better person and more engaged in the government. It feels like it does have an impact on me and my life and I know I'll go back and watch often. Not to mention the many fanfics I will read, that I've already begun starting to read. I do have the DVDs and yes, I do have a vid idea although the clipping may be rather tedious as it always is. But anything hard requires effort and this show is worth it.
Some spoilers under the cut:
Santos for President! Yay!! Talk about life imitating art. He's no Obama but I did love him a lot and I'm so glad that another Democrat got the White House. I was so bummed that reality would actually be better than the fantasy. The story just kept seeming to be that it was a good try but not good enough, that Vinick was just too good and principled enough. And although I did like him better than most Republicans and it was funny to see a pre-sell out McCain similarity, I would have been so sad if that happened. I did wish Santos would win more on the issues rather than an accident and circumstances helping so much but it did relate at least. Also I wished they focused a little bit more on the impact of not having another white man win the presidency and they didn't predict the internet and grassroots playing such a role but they did pretty good with predictions, I'll give them that.
I liked the final episode a lot although I had a couple issues. First being, no Toby??? Seriously??! I get that they talked about him and he was a big part but I feel like he should have at least been watching the inauguration or had a talk with one of them. I also would have liked to see more of Sam especially with him and the president. Any more of the core team all together, CJ, Josh, Toby, Sam and Jed would have been much better. I'm not as mad because the premiere got in that flash forward of most of them together (no Sam?? :() but still. I did love the opening montage of DC shots and I loved getting to see the inauguration. Lots of beautiful and sad shots with them taking down all of Bartlet's stuff and picture. I LOVED the paper napkin: Bartlet for America!!! That was so perfect and a great way to keep Leo in.
Speaking of Leo, nooooo :( I knew it was coming but it was so heartbreaking when he died. I was crying intermittedly throughout those two episodes. I was a little annoyed that the President didn't breakdown as much as I thought he was going to, I mean it's his freaking best friend for the past 30 years! The funeral was beautiful though at least and the president sharing memories was one of my favorite moments of the show ever. I wished he hadn't died til AFTER he won the vice presidency because I was so happy to see him get that position (sooooo awesome!) but what can you do.
Relationship wise, I'm relatively happy with how they played the Josh/Donna stuff. They sure ruined my working together objection for the most part which I'm thankful of. I do wish there was more buildup to their relationship but then again, I wouldn't want to see it so it all worked out. I still pretty much see them as friends who like to kiss sometimes but that's the beauty of the show and it helps me not mind the relationship so that works. I just like seeing Josh happy. All of them happy which is why I'm glad CJ and Danny worked out. Mostly though, I love my team, my core four. I really love how they occupy the space between friends and lovers, dancing on it. I'm just a subtext person at heart and I like how it can go either way even though you can bet your ass it makes me extremely happy to see my favorite relationships onscreen. Other relationships on this show may be cute and lovable but my OT4 just reaches deep within me with how deep and strong their love for each other is that I can't help but have them be my favorites. With lots of Jed and Leo (and Abbey) love on the side.
I do have to say that the show began to lose me after 604 and especially after 610. Once they lost Josh and started showing the campaigning more, it broke my heart to see the Team so separated. Once Toby left because of the leak, it was even worse with everyone so disconnected. I still enjoyed the show, I just didn't feel the love as strong and the episodes weren't quite as funny and lovable. I know life has to go on after a President leaves office, I just wish my guys didn't have to do it and could stay more as a Team. Still not sure how I feel about the Toby thing, mostly I still love him no matter what happened on the show. I was surprised but the brother motive at least makes sense. Also they did too much military stuff and less legislative stuff which is the stuff I care about. I know it's hard to do before the election but it doesn't hurt to try especially after the 365 speech. There were definitely a bit too many dropped plotlines later in the show.
Enough of the bad, here are more things I loved:

-Makeup! Trimming his beard! Body language, aww. I love Toby outside his comfort zone.
-Josh to CJ: You’re his guy. You’’re in the room, in the chair. He needs you. That’s how it was with Leo, that’s how it’s supposed to be. Awwww. She is!
-Leo hugs in his office!! And with Jed!! I missed him so much.
-God, the unspoken between Leo and Jed kills me
-"I could kiss you on your married mouth" Hee sometimes I lean close to CJ/Jed when they talk like that.
-CJ’s basketball gift! Which she promptly shoots in the trash, Josh: I’ve never been more attracted to you in my life” CJ is awesome so I can see why.
-"What’s with these people, they can’t stop talking about sex?" Toby: If they can’t be having it...Score one for Toby!
-“That the White House Chief of Staff doesn’t get to issue personal statements that read like letters to the editor of soap opera digest.” Oh Toby.
-I love Toby being pissed at Josh for not leaving. YOU DONT LEAVE! (although I’m with Josh. very sadly on this)

Other things I have been doing in my free time is watching Season Two of Mad Men. It was a perfect storm that got me into it, a post about it returning fromprojctrungay, a Facebook alert from a fanpage about a game to make yourself look like the Mad Men characters and hearing about commentaries on the S2 DVD from Matthew Weiner. So I immediatly went out to the store to buy an overpriced copy and watched all of the episodes with the commentary on in two days. Wow, Matthew Weiner and the other writers are brilliant. And Mad Men is SO PRETTY. It reminded me why I love it and need it to come back right now gah. The bad part is the premiere is during Vividcon. In a hotel without AMC damn it!! I'm still pissed they didn't start in July and now this. I can d/l it but I like watching it live :( I hear good things though about Sal's storylines so I am anxiously awaiting that. Rewatching the show reminded me why he was my favorite and so damn sexy.
I am also the proud owner of a new 2 TB external hard drive, CJ. It seems I always get new hard drives when I love awesome, politically minded women, heh. But I am using it to put all my DVDs on it so I don't have to leave them all behind when I go to college and so I can vid. It's very exciting :) Who wants to bet when I run out of space?
Can't believe Vividcon is less than two weeks away! All this talk is making me impatient and wishing it would just get here already. My annual Vividcon insecurity/anxiety period happened earlier but it's gone now and I'm feeling excited about seeing everyone again and having a good time with vids and vidfans. Thankfully to keep my mind off of it, tomorrow I am going to see Rent! And going to meetstephmck as well which will be fun. It'll be nice to see Anthony Rapp as Mark's my favorite. Best part is seeing La Vie Boheme live! Love that song so much, I can't even say. Until tomorrow...

laurashapiro (I finally get the ball significance!) and I Hear The Bells by Xandra, does anyone know of any other good ones?Other things I have been doing in my free time is watching Season Two of Mad Men. It was a perfect storm that got me into it, a post about it returning from
projctrungay, a Facebook alert from a fanpage about a game to make yourself look like the Mad Men characters and hearing about commentaries on the S2 DVD from Matthew Weiner. So I immediatly went out to the store to buy an overpriced copy and watched all of the episodes with the commentary on in two days. Wow, Matthew Weiner and the other writers are brilliant. And Mad Men is SO PRETTY. It reminded me why I love it and need it to come back right now gah. The bad part is the premiere is during Vividcon. In a hotel without AMC damn it!! I'm still pissed they didn't start in July and now this. I can d/l it but I like watching it live :( I hear good things though about Sal's storylines so I am anxiously awaiting that. Rewatching the show reminded me why he was my favorite and so damn sexy. I am also the proud owner of a new 2 TB external hard drive, CJ. It seems I always get new hard drives when I love awesome, politically minded women, heh. But I am using it to put all my DVDs on it so I don't have to leave them all behind when I go to college and so I can vid. It's very exciting :) Who wants to bet when I run out of space?
Can't believe Vividcon is less than two weeks away! All this talk is making me impatient and wishing it would just get here already. My annual Vividcon insecurity/anxiety period happened earlier but it's gone now and I'm feeling excited about seeing everyone again and having a good time with vids and vidfans. Thankfully to keep my mind off of it, tomorrow I am going to see Rent! And going to meet
stephmck as well which will be fun. It'll be nice to see Anthony Rapp as Mark's my favorite. Best part is seeing La Vie Boheme live! Love that song so much, I can't even say. Until tomorrow...
