Vividcon 2009 Panels and Vidshow Reviews
Here are all of my notes on the Vividcon 2009 panels and vidshow reviews. I apologize in advance for their fragmentation and some of it being hard to understand, I did the best I could in recording and typing these up but missed some things. If you notice any mistakes, feel free to correct me and I'll change them. Also if you'd like attribution, let me know and I can do that too, it's just really hard to keep track of that AND take notes. I hope these are useful to anyone interested.
Photoshop Your Vid
-vids as visual art, a banner can help create beauty
-marketing tool but also sometimes the banner can deceive and aren't connect
-motion is important so when still is used in vid it can be jarring
-use of Photoshop as framing device: can use dynamic link ex. Pandora's box cam give more meaning
-clip of In My Veins: eye is moving which makes it more interesting (had to use PS)
-open Photoshop, preset settings to use: use NTSC one that fits Premiere project/default PS size, usually pixels, if printing then increase resolution (pixels/inch), if doing mask then choose transparent, if starting out then defaults are fine
-edit paste or file>open, edit>free transform: easier to move around
-lasso can select whatever you need, wand can find borders
-paint brushes (can get more on internet), drop d/led brushes into adobe brush folder, restart PS
-press arrow down, pick a brush to use
-when you paste it, it pastes as a smart object, hard to use so right click and rasterize
-you need a reference frame in Premiere to build mask, export frame you want to use
-in PS: file>place: reference -make sure you save PS file
-use lasso to copy eye, copy paste above, delete layer that's below and above image will replace reference frame
-choose a brush but make sure you pick a small brush (razor brush), then delete reference and you get mask, file>save it and make sure mask fits
-for other clip, use motion to make smaller -use stencil alpha
-use feathering and increase, play with opacity and colors
-after each keyframe, resize image so it fits
History of Film 201
-dissolve = crossfade
-humans can't process dissolves in a naturalistic way, don't see world in dissolves but in straight cuts (move eyes to two places, see blinks)
-Hitchcock did experimental film, Rope with 9 cuts, no one could watch in theater
-have to think about how to get character from one room to another...don't have to show for audience to get it->dependent on shorthand
-x axis: disorients audience if you jump the plane
-humans have inherent sense of rhythm but don't want to bore w/same shots, vary clip conversation or it becomes one image and bleeds together
-don't want metronome of clips because people want variance
-screen movement: watch where hero enters (left) and villain (right) in western culture
-jump cut: shouldn't jump cut from close up to super close up
-right before important moment, a great actor will blink
-trained to assimilate cuts faster, ex. sunset boulevard uses 85 cuts (in certain time frame) and sixth sense uses 170 in same amount of time
-silent films had long establishing shots to let people see every part of frame
-vs. Transformers which cut fast with a lot going on
-dissolve is a signifier of motion, some other reality
-trained to look for horror in slow clip with no cuts
-don't put today's standard on yesterdays film (and vids)
-when will we max out, half frame starts looking like blobs
-noticed cutting on TV shows, cut too close to action and it looks like a stray frame> when people stop and you cut, people notice
-cineaste (?): film magazine
-Lawrence of Arabia shot from cigarette to desert shot
-the eye is quicker book, in the blink of an eye book
Recruiter Vids
-vid is interesting, I like watching shows about that
-recruiter vids recruit people to watch show
-things that make you go hmm, why?
-plot focused vids don't work but vids that explain characters intrigue more
-if don't know backstory, then don't get
-fine line between showing off whats great vs. broader
-attached to character vs. attached to fandom, just interested in the central focus\
-like vids that give sense of mood of a show like quirk or humor + darkness
-something that has to be accessible AND something tantalizing, whats that?
-power of pretty, burn notice promo vids, that looks very cool like colors
-a vid that shows dynamics of people->want to write dynamics of people
-vid shows the love the vidder has in every pore>was anti-McShep and then saw Bohemian Like You
-if you're into the show, its hard to know if its completely accessible or not
-need to know audience, intent and to see if it fails
-don't show Handlebars to unknown because its so dark
-trailer for movie, want to shock audience and show only the best parts, more actiony works better, showing ship can be hard
-vid not intended as recruiter vids, can be surprised
-this makes you happy, I'd like to know more
-is recruiter vid successful if they don't like the show: no b/c want to get people in fandom and yes b/c it had the talent to have them check it out
-equilibrium vid: people intrigued but movie bad, save people from source
-attentionality: intent of it, just making it better, not getting people to watch
-my fandom is great, here's why vs. fixing the source
-is small fandom vid automatically a recruiter vid?
-there's smaller number of people so it has to recruit people
-any small fandom vid is a recruiter vid makers the term meaningless
-look at CVV list, tons of tiny fandoms
-meaning has to lie in recruitee, if it doesnt recruit anyone then its not a recruiter vid
-earmarks that say this is a recruiter vid
-looking for scope because too specific leads to lessen interest, big recruits more people
-how much should you pay attention to spoilers in recruiter vids?
-tease but not spoiler
-depends on who you're trying to recruit: in fandom and not in fandom, levels of experience are different
-can spoil people but sometimes you don't know you're spoiled
-harder to spoil in vids vs. in fic
-cast change, if vid uses current cast, is that a spoiler?
-dont know what spoiler means, is it spoiler
-ex. of great recruiter vid: Haunted
-a lot of footage from Pilot, earth blows up in first 10 minutes
-interesting plot + emotional connection
-works on a different level if seen the show, much more emotional now
-vid showcases so many things that can help interest: ensemble, plot, family relationships
-sentinel vids: pretty but not worldbuilding, less to interest
-older fandoms: vids that are online, jive talking=humorous, got into it
-recruiter vids have spark -sense of vicarious
-great song helps, pimps a new band, exposes to new music
-people vidding weird sources for vidding fandom and less for pimping
-the right 15 second clip can help
Understanding Audience
-two big ways of talking about audience
-audience addressed: if youre going to make a vid, think about what they know, prejudices, evidence they expect
-then this guy, Walter Ong, audiences arent that easy to parse, what cues to tell us that roles youre supposed to play
-guns, women and chainsaws: slasher films, almost always have female protagonists, identify w/killer if guy (assumption) -they first start off that way: movies pander to them: gore, breasts -then character development, music, etc and identify w/female, when she grabs ax then they root for her
-its both, who will watch my vids, fandom very audience centric, can take shortcuts, rely on audience
-through pov, how we develop, ask our audiences to play certain roles, women's work is external, outside source looking in on it critically, asking to play a role
-vid expects kinds of things from audience
example: SGA vid- Can't Take My Eyes off of you
-Rodney and Ronon dont get along on show
-liked the fannish meta connection that its playing against the popular pairing
-clear superimpositions in some places let people know source is manipulated, heads pasted on
-if you dont get a vid, it can mean youre not the audience, for people who dont watch sga then dont really get
-but also audience invoked that you see this as playful, cute, thats so clever
-vidder is very frustrated, imagine this person is making characters together
-even diehard mcshep can get into it, plenty of people love ronon so it gets the yay ronon parts where he's kickass
-if you know fandom, vidder, song etc lets know things
-if you dont know source, then vidder voice = love letter to character, go meta
example of audience invoked (extreme): Piece of Me Britney Spears vid
-think of where you're supposed to to locate yourself, where the "you", think about pov
-interesting experience, first time saw: I=Britney, You is me, newspapers, paparazzi, etc but I dont know about her so reject the you as me
-opposite: know all of clips, consumer of gossip culture, vid condemns, audience, you see attention, see child robbed of everything
-dont follow coverage, entire footage you dont fans (only saw first half or so) but paparazzi
-attacked by media
-everyone wants a piece of her, vid makes sympathetic
-not sympathetic, selling herself -her eyes, mirror
-in credits, flash goes out to you, pulls you in
-tabloid bends out
-see tabloids in grocery store
-following her or other celebrity (not just about Britney)
-use of being audience of consumers
-being forced into it -crappy youtube version works because thats how we watch it
-implication of me as the audience builds
-starts at beginning, selling herself through her own videos
-get more and more news as video goes on, piece of ass, piece of entertainment, piece of flesh
-first consumers take package, but then what gets consumed is not what she wants to give, no one deserves that even if you sell for it
-fan profits off of her, crying fan
-shots of her looking in mirror, implicate her but also out in her vision
-be distanced consumer bit critique your role
-chose b/c its extreme and uncomfortable. dont know source so it was easy for vid to move, most vids are invoking an audience
-intentionality: I'm going to use Youtube footage for invoking, pick up tips from watching TV ex. camera angle changes
-in the end, its you, before other people
-confrontational, bring it on, ill give you a piece
-in control of image and then it stops and gets out of control
-songs on how hard to be a rock star, dont buy them
-vid works on level, she didnt have much of choice, didnt start as adult but as child, sexualization, bravado is counteracted
-react personally, held pride of not being a part of it but understand more than I thought
-know it by being in our culture, its happening again
-picked SPN b/c its big fandom (womens work), Britney is big topic
-unreliable narrative invites in b/c audience laugh a little, pulls into conspiracy
-as vidder, think audience then freezes (while vidding), think of self as audience, this is what I'm getting from this
-double vision, see as audience members, see differently, can not think but also what are fans going to see, what contextual meaning and can you decontextualize, vidder unaware
-OTW article: fans, participants, etc (about topic)
-tabloids, help distance, amount of work vid watchers do is hard to see, we notice hard work, when we cant see it>starter vids
-we've retrained our eyes to see it differently
FX
-creative cow.net, lydia.com = tutorials, help
-why use FX: create visual interest/eye candy, subtle: color correction, capture/create a mood, timing adjustments, text: title cards, overlays, storytelling possibilities, changing original narrative, animating, splicing (?) stills
-getting started: dive in, start simple
-favorite FX: time remap helps find beat -color correction -levels and curves - scale: resolution -mattes -precomposing: merge layers then effects on top
-trapcode has good plugins
-rough cut in Premiere -editing in 30 second sequences will save time later -use messy mattes and keying - color correction -speed changes and frame holds
-import into After Effects -file>import pproj>import all sequences, 30 sec compositions
-keyed out blue in bring it on (in can delight) which made it easier
-dont be perfectionist in the first time through
-can change resolution of view, smaller is faster
-hold control and drag to get audio
-Import Premieres file, will import clips/audio from sequence(s)
-every clip put in separate layer
-timing in Premiere is easier so do rough cut
-every sequence has same audio file so you dont have to cut audio file
-turn all audio files off in vid
-export final vid w/AE
-can solo (to right of eye icon) and only show certain clip
-can slide keyframes around on beats, blow up scale to emphasize beat
-mask: key every frame to move matte, move points
-pen tool: find good spot, most extended part (of clip),, dont add any more mask points once done
-mask path is where you do keyframe
-click on one point, can drag mask, hold control to use selection tool, less points the better so less tweaking each frame
-can change background color to see easier
-feather mask to make it look better
-dark layer: copy layer>color correction: levels & curves, put levels toward light, add curves if wanted
-add effect: glow to it -radius (how much it blurs), intensity, turn threshold down (how high it'll pick up)
-press forward/back arrows to go to next/previous keyframe
-time remap: pick frame you want to hold still, set keyframe, drag out...[didn't get the rest]
-CVV Can Delight: cut Buffy/Faith out -frozen, set key when you want mask to turn on
-circle in illustrator, change transparent to take out black, put over hands (together in shared kill clip), set keyframe, opacity 0>on frame turn on
-highlight circle, echo space: 11 instances (play), delay between space, make layers -add glow, change color
You Crack Me Up
-wanted to use Papa Don't Preach but couldn't
-can you have a vid that's funny but not lol funny/crack funny?
What Goes Around
-didn't know source/song didnt get it
-spock going after guy is funny
-lyrics approached literally, around=circles, funny, funny vid to dark topic
-stalking=funny, haha -apply song to complete opposite makes funny but song fits not as well
-worked: sylar on bed, head turning, like music video
Daniel vid
-song: poor girl, one big chance, work way up in the world until she's rich cortesean
-subject matter funny is it inappropriate? -part of me that is 14 is in tears, part that's feminist is crying and part of me is laughing, Daniel shoots at end makes angrier, mad at song in feminist way
-have to hear whats going on lyrically to get the joke sometimes
-sometimes dont lol but still find funny, whimsy versus humor vs. crack
I Kissed a Girl
-didnt realize that Clark kissed that many girls, does it change the way you feel about song>now I can listen to song again -vid subverted song's subversion
-boyfriend Oliver>changed to him to Clark the girl
mychan's vid
Unexpected = funny, random quotes from cartoons/emo Dean
-drawn out clips would have helped, needed time to get the joke
-didn't like the pacing, felt like drabbles
-pacing is everything, cant overstay welcome, liked cut short so it didnt take too long -like a comedy/variety show
-fun in small dose -felt choppy -step on its own laughs
-work they expected audience to do was too much for so short time
-how well you know source can effect as it can be hard to grasp
The Smartest People in the World
-gave time to see scene, appreciate joke, immediate buy in w/physical humor vs. contextual
-mod comment: chose big fandoms to help bring funny, helps w/communal experience
Jolene
-people laughed at ridiculous use of effects, laugh because we know vid conventions
-for example with Another Sunday, dark Premieres helped funny because we needed it
-did effects work?
-Jolene repetition is funny esp. since it builds/crescendos->pros vid: repeats but builds to big accidents
-Rodney's pain face = funny> best melodrama in history, pain is so great
-Woody Allen hits woman in face w/bottle and it doesn't stop, somehow funny
-turn around echo is funny
-repetition: effect is so over the top, bad idea but funny
-repetition funny when you know they're trying to do it
Jizz In My Pants
-song choice: comedy song = half the work's been done, vidder thought about song, played with lyrics, not always literal, took funny song seriously -can let song carry but put art in it
-literalism: can make vids funny that did not intend, only shot there because of literal
-whatever/jizz - silly statement about source but some vids just try to be funny, not rewatchable
-if laughing to myself, then it should work
Hot Fuzz vid
-love is so over the top anyway, makes happy
-fits tone, opposite of action movie, not focus
-arms marching through: to the story of love, funny
Anything The Doctor Can Do (I Can Do Better)
-over the top, don't hear + over the top acting, faces, don't have matching theatrically
-compare to Kandy Fong's Anything vid, this version of song works, longer, different pacing
-compare to Xena which has theatrical
-John Barrowman is actually funny that he sings the song
-slash llama> loved finding llama
Fancy
-transformation from old to new
-less literal, MS change Daniel from geek to shoot guns
-going to be a lady someday = sam shooting, Daniel wants to be like her someday
-I have been successful in high class cortison/macho man -disconnect between the two
-know vidder so made laugh thinking of her laughing
-end clued in on vidder, won trust
-dress=stargate
Timing is Everything
-not everything, maybe song choice is everything
-Timing is where you position a clip (micro)
-pacing - where you put clips over course of vid (macro)
-Timing: (waveform picture) top part is the hit (punch), move back three frames and put impact there
-1 frame? -consistency is important
-intuitive, if it doesnt look right, feel in body
-Doesn't tell you which beat or why
-What is good timing? What's bad?
-Bad timing is where vid is missing key parts, doesn't feel like music and video is together> opposite is married, not in unison
-bad is ignoring what's happening in the music, can't hear whats happening in music> emotional content
-elements of music? punchline is important, word you don't expect
-tempo changed but the pacing does not
-what kind of impact on audience ex. Dead Zone: fast cuts, swelling vs. one long shot at end, know big at ending builds suspense
Pacing
-variety, not on every downbeat
-intent is important: if you do it randomly or don't hit beats
-hit on beat, need to have something going on even if it's an eye blink or internal motion, something needs to go there
-missing link between two, consider every instruments rhythm, drum/percussion = backbone, others are free to pace to keep consistent with percussion or guitar, consistency throughout and pacing comes from song and then everything is an instrument
-cut on beats or pay attention to broader musical phrases, start hearing just one instrument and have to step back
-beats just 1/3, 2/4, other instruments can tie in
-don't want to sacrifice timing for flow, visuals can cut for you so no need to cut
-need the beat for something else, not cutting, cuts can be invisible
-depends on type of music, techno = beat vs. waltz glide past it ex. Doctor Who vid
-try to map out stress points in songs, edits that need to be noticed put there
-bad pacing: all favorite clips in beginning, end filler -long and fastly cut from beginning, just exhausting, timed equally fast ex. Rodiohead cut slow in beginning so end with viewer's attention
-boring pop songs don't give you anywhere to go so must manufacture it
-big emotion: if you don't use pacing to help then you miss out -don't leave filler
-big idea is easily found right away
-work under assumption that you have to go there, can limit because we expect -arranged choruses, etc as end petered out -aware audience expected it
-narrative needs going more than vid?
-how to know whether it will build or not
-no lead up to big shots but don't give time to laugh, just punchline
-need room to breathe and pause
-when you work on vid, give chance to inhale, give something to expect, something to prepare, punch, breathe or you become monotonous
-timing = beat, pacing = lyrics, rhythm goes to certain phrases and helps with pacing
-enthusiastic in beginning but then lose interest in end
-how to know when to cut fast/slow
-music will get busier with more instruments
-blue stars in guitar hero
-singer's voice will change, loud, more voice, the bridge (faster)
-thematic reasons because internal narrative, what you're trying to say
-cut faster to give more motion
-different songs, get new songs, reshape songs
-don't need to process lyrics so can cut faster in bridges, can cut faster in second chorus
-what information does this clip need to convey then give more time for important shots, more time for shots with motion, repeated clip needs less time, relates to earlier clip then needs more time
-favorite part first so vid end first
-do the favorite part near end (of vidding process) or will quit after
-two tricks: know where you're ending, put ending clip down first, if bridge: will idea work in that
-color code lyrics, make beats/stress points
-bridge is where things change so story should change, discovery/revelation
-mark distinct phrases, part of bridge, mark where change is happening
-amount of source can change
-fast cuts too fast but then used instrumentation to reflect guitars, used zoom for others, rewatched and worked
-Atrophine: found downbeat, live by it
-song/source liked pacing so not so bad
-don't waste guitar on cut
-motion on beat -quicker cut b/c no lyrics, music gets less busy=slow -emotional = slower if reflects
-stuff happens in slower clips to reflect music
-first song 1,2,3,4 -2nd song: divide into 3,3, 2 = 8 but not always cut on 2,4
-inhale = upbeat going into big guitar strum, land on something harder because up
-more dynamic song helps: instrumentation, volume, etc
-even slow song has stuff to do, harder to find
-(New Frontier) kept circle going, always spinning, river turning, pace was building by using rotation which excites viewer, dynamism
-begin bridge, every external motion can have longer clips
-Homework: watch Dante's Prayer- slow song, make some cuts appropriate to song/ideas, something is moving, eye directed, end of vid is more interesting, more overlays, makes it feel like pace is being picked up
-make it look effortless
I C WHAT YOU DID THAR
-trying to show different types of meta, not shown at VVC, organized by topic
-text in beginning/end (Glass)
Right to Be Angry
-didn't see vid as fair use, filed under gender theory if take it as men effecting women vs. effecting fans
-girls going after the man, soldiers vs. big ones and then saw Glory, glam chick and was interested in what we do to herself
-at begging: Pat Benetar, a fan, characters = fan
-problem with metaphor as violence as okay, women beating up men, to what extent is fannish entitlement...
-(vidder) was about feminism, feelings of anger, I work with Buffy, etc, got takedown notice and became even more...
-fan = characters comes up a lot
-one = this is what we see vs. this is us
Secret Asian Man
-lots of Asian stuff going on, images but no Asian people
White & Nerdy
-stereotype of white, nerdy guys which isn't true
-stereotyped does get played, meant to be funny because black nerd
-takedown of the weird al song
-changes definition of white, seen as being white but just himself
-its both overt and subversive, didn't need to see show
-kirk/picard->take: actor of color with character of color
-humor in vids: humor used for political subversion to take down political structure (board falls down), criticize stereotype, I'm not represented here (Secret Asian Man) -it's not questioning stereotype (song) but vid does
-mocks hip hop song stereotype
-felt protective because its saying policing of authenticity, white enough, poc enough, leading up>reaction shots of others, show him trying to act like a "black man", possible for people to watch and laugh and not get it
-how audience reacts to genre shows/media, idea of audience looking for someone who looks not white
Negative Sex
-visually linear show oppression, TTSCC clip say a lot about being careful vs. blaming people for oppression
My Medea
--midstream changed view, first how Joss Whedon treats female characters vs. creating objects to put perceptions on them, RPF puts stuff on people, what are we doing and is that okay
-characters as characters, males as Joss Whedon
-because it's all Joss Whedon footage, it makes you think of camera as Joss gaze, women cut up, beaten down, think about what he's doing
-criticize female engagement with sources
-powerful women are okay if you can shut them off, put in short skirt
-breaking these women and then he can be the hero in making them powerful
-medea is used by husband but kills her husband
Effigy
-vid made source look smart, arthurian tied in well
-from BBC, wanted to Smallville arthurian legend
-Effigy explicit, Intergalactic implict with comic books
-queen of myth and now I'm just a servant?
-Gwen least developed so bringing in legend helps develop
-black/white made stark, showed contrast, white queen, elevated and trapt, become nun, pointed commentary what was the social framing of that change?
Intergalactic Friends
-use in source references to Superman
-went AU to show what would happen in future
-song use was comic booky, taking CB and reinterpreting as soap opera (Veronica Mars song), multi-authored canons, in Intergalactic Friends/Red, male heroes in narrative of boy growing into hero, emotionally hate Effigy because Merlin is unlike canon, not happy, lovely servant, woman turning into powerless queen
A Lieutenant Colonel is Being Beaten
-All sex related -eroticise violence of men versus _
-hate that vid because in right way, everything I hate about SGA fandom, characterization of John Sheppard, treated as rape _(?)
-making violence erotic, everything you don't want to admit you like
-not true, history of hurt/comfort, liking violence, accepted
-acatheory, child is being beaten, psych test, whose paraphelia is being analyzed, genre vs. audience
-so many clips in SGA of John Sheppard on knees, interesting to have lead male, having a good time
-sexualized violence of men but want it but clearly participating, M is fear of being raped
Martina
-I am God: Veronica Mars becomes more and more reckless
Pressure
-taste the friendship, spending a weekend, special friendship activity
-female industry, women cooking for them, we need support from her, stereotypical women still respected
-still helps even if not interested
-respect for VHS vidders as younger person
Still Alive
-about how women are mistreated but yet we buy into it by participating but out fannishness is still alive, even if we get bad from creators we find a way to carry on
-entire media is misogynist so how do we find pleasure even if we get bad from creators we find a way to carry on
-fandom snipes at each other a lot too
-uprising of fandom, take violence of source and into fandom, now we're in control
-wanted it to be Torchwood vid, people in power do stuff to our characters, we're in control, bring to life, kill better>wanted to see buffy punch
-negative of fandom and internalized mysgony, wank in devil's trap, fannish history of shows, creators idiots, females written outside of show because OF fans
-character - fandom, humor for dark topics, different fanworks, used them in a different way
-enjoying point out the weird stuff in fandom
-violence against women, man and then show women violence against men, celebrating violence and not looking at the other side
-answer of violence is not violence
Town Hall
-Winning the battle of hearts and minds
-People like us -PR, we're art and legal war is being won
-trouble is corporate America, fitting into business plans, waiting on tech, make sure legal situation, build places to live and work in peace
-summer focus in cinema journal, essays in focus sections, legitimization, fight on every front whatever it is, we do that
-making a case as vidding as an art helps not just feminist/political
-site is being built by feminist video art, transformative work, vids section, want input from all vidders
-piece on NPR, interviewed vidders, indicator of cultural acceptance, media lobby did it because editor is a fan, people in high places are fans
-
heresluck went down to DC, OTW filed an applied comment, requested exemption of noncommercial transformative work, symbolic gesture, might not matter, ban is on tech not owning tech, doesn't matter for individuals
-historically legal is behind (as in behind the times in the) protection of art, point is to show up so we can make this, "girlfriend was on fire" (with smartness)
-EFF spearheaded, welcomed vidders, invited to speak at the table, conversation is happening, did it because remix culture dominated by a few guys, our stuff wasn't on the agenda
-people recognize it now, love that we're connected, 24/7 DIY. vid community was most organized there, people like because they get answers, run some polls, makes us able to make them do what we want
-corporate: happening to the web, academic footnotes are wrong (because iMeem links don't work), happened before published, no support, films are used to it (footnotes being wrong), fuck you iMeem
-threw out all user generated content, you're great but not part of our business plan
-Buffy vs. Edward got all acclaim, he tried to show vidding as big thing but we were right in the middle of trauma of iMeem>you guys are fabulous but nervous because of corporate
-corporate giving away things for free, we're going to do it the real thing, the professionals are here, you can leave, iMeem made deals with professional people
-in the absence of something better...our TVs aren't broken
-there will be professional vids but not only that
-people used to think that novels would take down storytellers
-we will talk back, they can't do it for us
-they're here to save us, scary because big money is coming, radio/tv is corporate
-we have vibrant, active community center and you have a mall and we're the first
-Blip just made Youtube deal...do we trust them?
-not a legal problem, user generated content doesn't fit into the plan
-Youtoom? tracking takedowns, January massacre occurred with tons of vids taken down because of Time Warner deal, having trouble doing takedowns, now can't upload because filter has such intensity, can't say look what we're missing, barrier to entry, stifled
-only people who get to be seen because only professionals get stuff up
-what to do: build something, need best technology for it
-serverless video streaming, backed by bittorrent, front end like Youtube, vidder host vid, stream by vidder, first view slow but faster later from other computers, doesn't use vast amounts of bandwidth
-need a year, first version comes out in November
-we use it for preview, wide audience, we're quality queens but we still need wider hearts and minds
-problem is when we use it (bittorrent) for pirating, it can get attacked, use tracker server just for vids, attack on legal, Youtube doesn't have to defend
-gets blocked because of bandwidth, vid files aren't that big, won't notice, we'll make sure everyone get obscure vids
-good design so smoothy screens, working with BBC (serverless video streaming)
-lots of people invested in getting versions for ourselves: politicals, bloggers, etc,
-nonprofit place so we can say leave us alone, open source video sharing, not alone in this
-we're the us, we need to build it, need tech people
-bittorrent security concerns, P2P is defended
-don't want to be in a position where it's a dealbreaker
-scare tactics against colleges, the more that's shared with legal stuff (like vids), the stronger it is to take the block off
-bittorrent needs to win hearts and minds, the more uses to show it's okay
-not exclusive solution, most groups there trying to get eyeballs on their stuff, we don't care about people seeing our work, we're penalized by our success
-immensely popular works on Bittorrent, no bandwidth problems, nor does it take down our infrastructure
-offer different ways to make sure sure small vids don't go too slow
-make our own torrent, tracker
-not worth it because our community is so spread out
-bias towards centralization of search place, fear to have one place but also easier to defend
-lawyer said we need a stronger free speech argument, we say, I promise to buy the DVD, if I''m a good consumer, can I please make my art?
-sound less pleading, even if you don't like it, we'll do it
-we're cockroaches in the nice way that survive anything
-shocked I didn't think to claim it as my right
-data to collect music buying habits
-people who "steal" also buy the most
-corporate gave away music for free so people will buy (just like vids!), like radio
-pragmatic argument vs. don't have a right
-takedowns spark resistance: rock gods, teen boy bloggers and vidders -teen boy bloggers duct tape across mouths in videos on Youtube -Rock gods = drum solos of like music songs, takedowns, shoulder to shoulder with Rock Gods, we are their greatest fans, tell lawyers, post on Youtube, they said vidders aren't revolutionary: you can find my vids on iMeem, where you can find them on Youtube -
cesperanza lept out, guy apologized for an hour, vidders don't build spaces?!
-our pleas would be whimsy -naiviety is charming
-we're building, offensive but then retracted, funny part was guy who said that was published in OTW journal -male protest of free speech
-aura of shame, you're doing what, football fans vs. talking, Rock Gods don't have con in Chicago
-build of free speech, good to have impassioned fans + links, I went to DC, could have just duct taped mouth?
-we were jaded, angrier, better organized than before
-fandom used to it, used to flouncing
-first flush of outrage, different way of being outraged
-memorial vid of lost vids (on Youtube), not organized
-co panelist showed how to change pitch of songs to get past Youtube filter, we're artiste, don't want to change pitch
-tutorials on youtube of how to change pitch, work arounds
-first 30 seconds is what is payed most attention
-fragmentation of Youtube vidders, they have no clue of use, buffy vid takedown had no idea of OTW, how to reach them
-lots of questions and now here's our server to host vids, right now we're screwed
-hard to reach individuals, no queen of Youtube vidders, as stumble upon Youtube vids, post a OTW link
-center for social media outreach
-if you see it, say something especially uninformed, it's not illegal
-felt like spread out, didn't know how it worked, looked to find others, couldn't find stories of takedown, wrote post to Henry Jenkins,, need emotional support
-tell us what you did, say to fight takedowns, place to talk
-people are going to keep "inventing" vidding (like fanfic) as some point, stumble in community, shouldn't need to belong to us, fragmentation is okay
-never been woman writer but I'll try, want people to know general idea, must be place for help
-don't want people to go away, don't accept takedowns and leave hobby
-will be savvy and now can go to SNL and will notice if user generated content goes away
-second nature to kids today, can't imagine not downloading at a drop of a hat, watch vids for free
-still human like us, corporate gives a library to play with well fuck that, you showed me it's possible so I'm going to go do that
-tech to create gets better
-great to put faith in teenagers circumventing the man, highlight Youtube vidders, we appreciate them, you are a part of what we do, Youtube channel?
-like us versus political remix, great statements stand out
-make ads for vidding, you are not alone, here's OTW/EFF, vidding community
-anti-confederacy act: copyright police, no lawyers to get IP addresses, people who support music, can't get past customs, took DVD of vids, ship it next time, porn rule
-larger business discussions, confidential documents, whatevers on your hard drive, US government can take
-virtual server + clean computer and download stuff
-Google's behind it all? Android on server
-started from Thailand porn
-give 5 minutes customs argument for vids
-4 TB can cross with vids -men more likely to be stopped, need vid bard
-write congressman, overreaching needs to stop
-need rich kid to be screwed with so they're get a lawyer
-[Bad username or unknown identity: laurashapiro"]: subtitling on dot sub to upload script, can turn subtitles on/offf, lets others translate
-VVC: all of vids subtitled? tremendous amount of work, can automatically add subtitles to a DVD for someone who wants, will accept subtitles
-
absolutedestiny will show other ways to subtitle
-help VVC develop legalese, terms of service to upload a vid, accept/don't accept as transformative work
-not fan of TOS, mostly fake as didn't truly consent as no one reads, legitimate good but not sure about
-VVC is The con, more traffic
-want site to say something about OTW, say something about Fair Use: educational, PR
-Henry Jenkins ? about documentary about Star Wars and George Lucas and his ambivalent relationship to fans, need SW vidders
-fan page for vidding on facebook, become a fan, interview with Lum, I had no idea of community
-can create second identity on facebook but be careful about names or FB will kick you out
-enforcement for individual, can sue but won't win, risk bias is much lower than watching Youtube video (not a risk either)
-OTW has facebook page
-could lose job because evil work place
-
rhoboat post how to stream vids from website, just got bought by google, half size with streaming
-vidding resource>option
-can embed anywhere
-Dreamwidth searchable but not by google, etc, respects privacy, can make vids findable
-update info on Fanlore with iMeem, etc, Dreamwidth, fannish wiki, where to find you, blip, etc
-two kinds of pages: log in user profile page, set questions there, only you can change while others can edit your own page
-helped others track down vidders, important vidding resource, list of new people each year (Vividcon fanlore page), nothing that proves BS like fact
-lots of people to help
-database for all con vids and vidder's vid tapes > on fanlore
-if someone touches your vid in a bad way, tell someone!
Vid Review
Metaphor
-wow, detachable penis for the new millennium
-it was awesomesauce
Sea Fever
-loved it following metaphor, vid is metaphor
-metaphor of sea, people are sailors, must do or die, one good day makes up for shit
-love starting out with PG looking at theater, the folding chair end, only theater, people drawing passion
-great song choice, between skull and literary lyrics it said Shakespeare
-great pacing that flows smoothly, waves rolling, it carries you
-appreciate slowness, pacing, shots not too long, space for ind.? shots
-old style, old fashioned in a good way, powerful, lets vid take time, when to cut short and long, love this vid
-getting it right, know what they're doing, vidder knows what she's doing
Fight the Power
-VCR vidder is Meryl Streep in career, having fun, appreciated
-no one got Tropic Thunder meta in class, loved seeing people get it
-no desire to see Tropic but LOVE vidding, insert vid clip makes love
-favorite part: fake trailer, favorite part of movie, great Yuletide fandom
-rick rolling was too long
-conversation with audience, how is it going to play in repeated viewings?
-paced for audience, gives joke, then laugh, wait for next joke, not going to work as well at home, already get joke
-themes in show: lots of meta, self-aware, self-referential, pure meta and self referential tone
-meta vid, letter to vid community
-meta also, used RDJ as white man to pimp out black man, only white pictures, fandom embraces problematic in sometimes cracked out way
All Apologies
-poor Edward is always constipated, beautiful last 30 seconds, made sense out of bizarre song, serious and tongue in cheek, balanced well
-wasn't sure if it was supposed to be funny, if I laughed wasn't sure if it would piss someone off
-looked like cop show I haven't seen, Forks HS told them what it was, didn't like song but vid helped, good vid to stay
-vid captured what book was, teenager, so serious and so ridiculous at same time, ultra 90s seriousness appreciation
-summary said the vid was funny, didn't quite work because don't know source, but gives permission to find funny
-how many vids rely on blurb, forgot blurb, not obvious...are blurbs spoilers?
Grown So Ugly
-not standout Angel vid but good, doesn't leap out of crowd, made me go wow by song choice, don't usually see, genius song choice, would have liked less black (same as lots of vids), you're using black clips wrong
-vid took awhile to snap into focus, doing what I have not seen, did something new, Angel/Buffy and Angel/Darla as same reactions to opposite things
-counted clips to beats, they're doing it on one beat that
heresluck taught us (in Timing panel)
-Understanding Audience: seen Angel a billion times, used well known clips as shorthand, Angel's life sucks a lot, get that without Angel knowledge, confused
-liked it a lot, looked like theyd seen a lot of vids, character study of asshole boyfriend, both assholes (Angel and Angelus), how different is Angel vs. Angelus, interesting take on established discussion
We Are
-so much T:TSCC is about vids, emotional shown visually but this shows how violent it all is, song asks whose responsible for this
-what I love is without watching the show, understood mythos without it, recruiter vid
-loved, trio of Terminator models are manipulating humans around, shows they're working in cahoots, what are we in control of, free will?
-controlled chaos, helped make sense of crazy
-vidgasm: so intelligent, flow so beautiful, visual feast, watch many times, body falls in water/terminator was great
-liked framing device, lines on highway, constantly in motion
Cassandra
-theme of pairs, fandoms (Merlin), songs (Paul Simon), two frames, pairing references, tough for vids then compare to other one, technical things I didn't get, screen split, strobing wasn't sure intentional
-wow this makes it look like the show brings out deep issues
-lots of layer, lots of information going on, lots of meaning to convey but too much to penetrate, so much going on, so detailed to get it all, too dense
-need to read summary to get it, beautiful....ohh she's Cassandra, would have liked title in beginning, that would have helped
-blurb underestimated audience, didn't need history lesson, softer blurb without being stark in syllabus class
Hard Sun
-fucking hard to make a Firefly vid look new but this did
-need lyrics in beginning to get, ivory tower, when I'm with she's good, great intro, chorus mix, we're traveling with her, fandom always with us
-visually amazing, as vid it was random Firefly vids to me, framing of visual, didn't get story from vid
-what story is it telling?
-vidshow was experimental vids that don't quite work: spent half of vid not getting point, what's tying together both shots, happiness of show into daily life, comment on evocation of human moments/warmth, wanted to build to realization
-taking fandom with you, talk about personal experience of fandom, wanted more vidders in it, it attached to them personally vs. more vids, built to brad walking away
-vid was story of Firefly, fall in love, it goes away even if you have fandom, all of ship trying to fix, the rain still comes, the show is going to end
-worked incredibly well, had to be Firefly, Firefly as a fandom, Firefly invites fan response, browncoats, belongs to source, great video footage, need video footage, emotional story, happiness, yes I'm part of us, I love them, they love me
See the USA
-don't we miss product placement, it is what it is, iconic thing in SPN
-style love, got it, wanted more style throughout with visuals, a bit more old timey
-adored this vid, love car, spoke to me, America, black and white, careful clip selection, great mood, loved it
-loved it, missed America from show, liked 1st season focus
-liked style of closing shot, perfect could have used sprawling lyric titles like in 50s movies
-always love SPN vid that doesn't take show seriously, same freaking road w/new town name was funny
-funny vid, heightened critique of show, failed to play out like road movie, vidder puts in what they missed
Pretty When You Cry
-colored borders have symbols to reflect characters (not in Premieres show but on DVDs). tried to figure out what was going on, distracted
-original: convinced it didn't have wallpaper, played differently, don't miss black strobing (from earlier trend of vidding), fallen out of favor, used on popular vid, if kept that, wanted clips to last all of heartbeat, needed more to cue in, black predominated
-three things: 1) omg vid is going to hurt 2) fascinated by sexual violence, FV (?) baby: ALL violence, most, ending handing toward you, I AM the poor girl
-loved it (black), worked to convey psychotic, fragmentation (better not brilliant), disturbing but loved
-strobing made hard to watch, worked with last clip, experienced like dolls, starting to remember but not enough to hold onto it
-contextual or meta as stalker Alpha or Joss
-borders as pov?
Mad About You
-book end with ending, beginning says so much with that, subtle, female sexuality in...?
-loved song choice, made it move, agreed structure of woman's life with undergarments
-love this vid, turning point in mid vid, sexy at first, romantic then wives show up and ohhh
-ashamed as man, point was men in 60's were bastards down to DNA (still love you)
-don't watch, fannish osmosis to know, know wives, wanting to be 3 wives for 3 characters, didn't know right from beginning
-started watching Mad Men two weeks ago, didn't expect women to be important in story but they are, true to source
-great for me watching, thankful I don't have to live there, how complicated mine is, guys still sexy but don't want to date, want Don but don't, complicated position as viewer
-loved show, loved the title card, wisp of smoke, illusory fade of way, girldle with femininity, use of power (of femininity), preparing to go into man's world, three different ways of being female in world, two opposite journeys (of Peggy and Joan in ad firm), mirroring at end, vulnerable, naked, brutalizing, men don't see them
Learn to Crawl
-loved, great classic slash vid, showed evolution, intense relationship but didn't see it that way
-wasn't clear whether manipulated color, great use of color, builds, before disaster there were brilliant blues and pinks, when Kat falls apart, there are greys and yellow, brings emotion
-bizarrely reminded of wonder of birds, different vid, balance emotional shots with other stuff happening, ferocious flavor of longing (not throughout vid), metaphor, things blew up, deftly handled
-vidgasm: kneeling lyrics, shoulder moment, ohhh
-great vid, got emotional impact of it, is one of them going to die, tension
Sleeping With Ghosts
-how eternal the pairing is, it never dies, meta vid as ship vid
-how recently..., fics mind meld from previous spock>new visual represent
-meta vid as Star Trek, worked
-clip choices with parallels worked well, liked search for spock footage
-passing of torch, reminds why I can accept new reboot
-sleeping with ghosts, new resolved with old, just from title
-wish mind meld was bookended to bring together
It Comes and Goes In Waves
-favorite of show, stands out
-not seen: works as recruiter vid, slowly but then had things I loved: violence, blood
-liked accessibility, know crime stories, clip choice, played on conventions so could get it
-visual composition was great, red hat, seagull, so beautiful to watch shots
-blurb takes away, so shocked to not see what I expect, blurb's a spoiler
-vid worked well emotionally, song choice brilliant, emotional connection to character
Turn Around
-tough time: already did it, didn't offer me anything, skull on the ground, bones on the ground
-what worked for me: captured grisly humor, not ship vid but ensemble
-wanted it shorter, pacing built, at end forgot because skulls got more gruesome, funny end, cut out a verse to be better, bones got silly
-don't know Bones, thought it was awesome
-pov focused in watching, lack of consistent pov distracted
Video Helped the Rock Star
-first though this was about film tech, oh it's about the witch
-watched vid but confused on what I was supposed to get, this is a wicked vid, read notes on site and still don't get
-style: clear visual like See the USA, Mad About You, It Comes and Goes in Waves, use version of movie, so clean, beautiful, it was Wicked, witch was radio star, loved use of color in show
-radio star played well, no sadistic characters anymore like Witch, don't see them unbalanced
-vid left with question, we see in 4 by 3, why made choice? -(reply)movie wasn't in widescreen at time
-needed to watch vid again, quote about best kind of huh wow and not wow, huh, that (first) kind of vid
American Tune
-going to cry again
-loved to take smart people and make them look like every man, familiar images, good facial expressions
-big emotion: still every frame, mashed buttons, bawling, favorite vid of con
-enjoyed a lot, love Spydaddy version, loved TWW but 2/3 clip by clip, better than vid or not, then relaxed
-opposite: love vid, brought emotion, critique: literal play to songs being suns, grand emotions swung a bit too much
-liked live crowd noise, tied to political happenings
-different version suited, the end worked much differently if Obama didn't win
-choice of using live (pair-Long Spear), enhanced vud experience, felt a part of live audience
-impressed with ensemble pov, showed all characters using same gesture, brilliant
Make Your Own Gesture
-interesting use of Glee=make your own
-loved use of Glee, made happy, carried us with deadlines, helped bridge into new season
-meta vid as fandom, make our own kind of music
Then The Morning Comes
-Aww
-Is what it is, there to make you aww
-deep abiding love of people get paid to do this, felt love from vidder, infectious
-salute=aww, kid does salute and then change at end
-fan saves the day, meta comment
-music + show = brilliant, silly, happy
-loved it but didn't do anything but show GQ, just recap
Location, Location, Location
-warning scared shit out of me
-title was helpful, usually character love, characters as part of show, wanted to step away but kept in
-clever idea but way too long, focused on sets, vid resonated with Firefly, threesome with Tropic vids, isiosyncratic branch out ideas, can't get over same space, not a parallel that I'd think of, all interesting as watching through fan
-different but drawn out, text could have put notes
-designed to play online, not vidshow
-more successful if there was a character study>crossover?
Every State Line
-blurbs: needs to say without opening, is vid not saying what it is, is it playing differently?
-self-referential with audio, like idea, vid felt weaker than narration, wanted to see more legend, another SPN vid
-reference legend, expect epic but song choice didn't expect
-song worked well with voiceover, experimenting vids, liked storytelling, didn't need epic, sitting around campfire telling ghost stories
-framing worked for me, telling story of people as characters, fact of being a legend
That was Another Country
-good song choice, good fragmented narrative, can't believe peanut butter makes cry
-vid worked because by the end of the vid, felt like I knew this guy
-stunning because body doesn't normally get attention, good to see joyous, loved, taken away, made powerful
-vid worked well as recruiter vid, beautiful mind (similar to), what's going on, these things could be true, made connect, that guy from LOTR (they're in love)
-music worked beautifully, couldn't get lyrics, what's being said is important
Comfortably Numb
-find pattern brilliant, things overlapping, broken, trying to fix herself, great song choice
-loved cover, two voices with Cameron and Allison, identity
-Allison's story as Cameron, whose real, hard time to find where supposed to look, need to watch again
-can't think without the wall, loved flashlight
-cover, mass produced classic> timed into personal women's story (like movie to T:TSCC)
-worked well for me, fact that context switch, that's what machines do (frames)
Go Baby
-best intro ever
-shiny happy fluffy movie/song
-don't know how deeply we can go, disconnect about boy in song
-I liked things they were doing, same motion to kick ass
-control issue with charlie but at end tall blond big grin, push button + explosion, I am in control
-wanted a better vid to song after earlier one
-about color, movement, power among women, clear vibrant style, love them already, in charge of bodies, joy, didn't think of guy, women, images of power
-really loved, brightness was too much, not matters?, yellow too
beautiful dirty rich
(perfect pause after watching clip of Adam's face)
-bandom vids with Led Zeppelin,
sherrold's show, self aware with use of headlines with flamboyantly gay
-gosh we love him, sexy, also meta commentary
-needs more sparkles
When Your Mind's Made Up
-classic vid, classic fandom, style of cutting, uniform
-different take of Duncan...not mine
-of course you'll lonely, you killed all your friends
Dark Room
-beautiful use of instrumental, good pacing, didn't need lyrics for emotion, brilliant
-Cassandra didn't work, this did, believed in depth, came out wow
-if this was what Merlin was like, I'd love the show, instinctual knowledge of cross cutting, masterful assembly with establishing shots
-successful most with Arthurian legend
Heaven Is A Place on Earth
-find it to be disconnect, wanted it to be funnier (crawl out) land softly for me
-not fandom, get in joke about SPN fandom about what's going on in it, fannish osmosis made work
-hit embarrassment squick, mocking them, I felt affection of them
In My Veins
-so much going on with color, blues read, dull, we get...
-find out how she dies, what her boundaries are, how do I be in this world, vid effective
-made vid softer, effects overdone, play with color w/o that much color
-washed out vs. sharper, what does it say?
-fascinated by relationship, set it up as creepy with all men + Sylar, cut off head, what do I care
-99% is Heroes but tiny bit of T:TSCC
Boy On A String
-loved
heresluck's vid so wanted to bask in it so fell behind, wanted to be fair
-thrown by song choice, liked concept but contrast between song/source doesn't work, left turn
Keeper of the Fire
-awww of Wonderfalls and then shit goes down, ohhh
-Prophets, doom, in which god talks to women, its little things vs. men apocalypse
-oh shit, god is scary, story of prophets
-successfully elevated female prophets, fault of canon, vid rescued, some intense experience
-experience of divine, scared shitness, which way to go, what is speaking from to me, pre Vatican II, sister explains good/bad angel
-use of Sam as not from God pulled out
How the West Was Won
-well edited, know song then know where it's going, tone doesn't work, hard to stay engaged to big payoff
-didn't know, still payed off with Zoe
-like sharp contrast with cartoon octopus, ooh where's this going
-a bit glazed and then at end, holy shit, what happened
-tech: when saw Summer Glau, went to robot place, dissonance
-I went to robot place
Don't Stop Me Now
-loved movies, went on too long, cut after second chorus, lost impact, wanted haha, love was wearing down
-wanted progression of fun/science to horror of creation
-loved color and look, parallel to vidding, final cut
They Don't Know
-great example of awesome, could have been bad, doing fun, fuck rest of the world
-cartoonizing, showing cartoon version of perfect joy, no darkness
-only works for rose, blonde haired
-loved this vid, turn in bloody vidder card, this is what happened when happy, perfect
-effect didn't work, reads as creepy to me, hoping to grow
Bromance?
-rare comedy, high concept that could have been longer, personal issues so had to cut middle verse, wished it was there, lots of fandoms that could have been included
-really liked framing device, seen SGA vid many times, liked scattershot, everyone join in
-miscued as SGA vid, SGA went on too long, wanted much shorter SGA opening
-this is how I perceive our relationship, babble, kirk/spock, don't you get me john, rodney is a fan
Long Spear
-did not work for me
-present as meta vid, now universe vid, now ship, now meta, get complete arc, audio jars at end, obama was just in a star trek vid
-had it first before you guys, women's voice on screen but hear what women have to say too
-didn't kick in til li li li, soured but reminded me of love
-liked it, expanded Star Trek with audio, familiar, all shows->fan...all of this combined, everything but the kitchen sink, chaos of whole phemomen, get messy
-so much in middle, had forgotten set up
-loved what vid was doing not the way it did, effected emotion, needed more time, attention to detail
-felt emotion was there but pissed off at same time, felt cheap, crazy, insane, 30 years of Trek, cool, wow
In Depth Vid Review
Marble House
-I don't watch Doctor Who: bookends with war, as you go through time you see awful things of humanity but still see good
-two part Human Nature, what the vids about
-are we worth saving by Time Lord
-strong emotional resonance because of Children of Earth, possible reasons why the Doctor doesn't come
-Doctor isn't in vid much, mostly John Smith and Martha
-Doctor doesn't know why he's Doctor in middle
-see Martha as being powerful with Tardis, as maid is depowered
-blown away, vid of the con, got the framing, WWI, got 1913 strongly, series of eyes creeped out
-human attempt to _ eternity, Martha's pov after intro, small child opening watch...
-haven't seen text used like it's used here, becomes part of what you see, to move eye to certain point
-don't see pov of doctor but others perception, see it as something bigger than can imagine
-most or all quotes used by john smith's dreams of being doctor
-found text distracting, not as evocative, didn't need words
-really enjoyed what she did with text, sky burning, will come back text, all images of war, will come back, where are you now when we need you?
-curious about decision to use text vs. audio
-text layout not quite perfect, too close to frame
(HWG's beach vid shown)
-text in Marble House doesn't work as well, drop shadow font helps in other vid, MH layered on which doesn't work as well, text keyed in just a bit, design different
-both text represent beginning and ending, 1st daughter locks? out, 9th is beginning to bring Rose back...
-was text needed? intro?
-appreciated text, 1st Doctor quote is to show all Doctor Who canon
-important to establish who Doctor was, galaxy and universe showed the extent of power
-text made it feel biblical, frames different from looking at it
-use of external footage: show focused on history so archive use was interesting...timing and pacing so it replicates archive
-did actually shoot WWI footage in episode, choice to use archival made it more real life
-transition from b/w to color was huge
-converted b/w footage was from Doctor Who footage
-liked choice of images, tank of Britannica, nostalgia of England before Great war while being horrendous...nuclear family John Smith has vs. nuclear of buffy eye family, bad images of gender and class
-meta discussion of why this time/place: all kids at boys school will die in WWI
Give It Up (and Club Vivid)
-What makes a good vid for Club Vivid?
-not stressful, focus on having fun, not worrying about vid being ripped to pieces
-difference between theater/analytical and fun
-usually Club Vivid doesn't get vid review
-song choice important, less known song means less likely to dance, very kinetic
-layering works: unable to put full attention on things, things that people can hook onto
-1) theme 2) structure and content 3) what happens after Club Vivid but also as rewatchability, will want to return to it
(Give It Up)
-know these guys, love these guys
-they're dancing! only two things than rock out
-all authority figures represented, fight against man
-nostalgia, familiarity, simple, effective way with celebrating dancing in choruses
-difference in tone in source, Ferris Bueller's Day Off versus Footloose
-things that audience can go with and build
-motion from different sources, dancing to thematic reasons
-Footloose most trouble with mix...
-effective, not just authority but yourself and what you hold yourself back from
-omg the vidder killed John Hughes...aww, gave a resonance
-resonance comes from importance of movies and nostalgia
-lets bring all my favorite parts together...bring a theme helps succeed after CVV
-multi can be hard when multi don't work together but this case needs to flow
-would have sworn it was the same show, same energy
-excellent editing techniques, felt strong connection to theme
-journey from start to end: rebel to leader
-first clip with air guitar, vs. kids in school: normally in vid, dance/performance metaphor is to overcome things but in this they dance right from the start, private performance to public performance...they have this that they keep to myself...unity theme
-ensemble vid: acts of individual resistance to grow resistance, 1st chorus alone,2nd chorus has pairs and then spreads out
-personal struggles, vertical movement, im not alone, tunnel and jumping out
-Paul McCartney, Good, Give It Up; like
jarrow's experience at VVC, 1st is about connecting, 2nd is about finding something and achieving things in self and third connects both->fannish celebration in general, these characters = us in Club Vivid
-vidding is personal and then it's an explosion of people coming together
-change the world so it's public dance because of individual acts
-air guitar as intro to audience, we can play along, we can dance along
-generations: youth, nostalgia, focused on music as more recent, teenage angst is always relevant, dealing with authority and peers, nails(?): it's all about community, toward end once it's built, there is stroller dancing baby: next generation -that baby is in their 20s now
-after Mr. Rogers, only guy that got us, gets John Hughes movies, rough time to be a kid as kids=horror, okay to be who we are
Challenge
Red Cliff
-really gorgeous
-guy in white is incredibly hot
-movie based on novel of romance of three kinds, classic of Chinese culture (like Arthurian legend), very old novel, formation of one Chinese state, two different flags united together in one
-fascinated by titles at end, titles in chinese, not able to comprehend, interesting choice
-this experience of foreign language speaks -> town hall accessibility to share them more wildly, want to know more
-showcase horror of war but this is joyously disconcerting but...
Land
-fucking love it
-valiant attempt to use all movies, tv shows...by god they're all going in
-1st, 2nd Term. movies obsession...stop now start
-overwhelming, a lot of vid for confusion, not made for me but great effort
-time travel is mutable but sarah/john is constant, seeing core stayed strong
-cyclical because of john
-lots of sources, with casting change try to obscure but this able to read as one character
-Patti Smith = epic so choice of music is perfect
-slammed into locker by bully = older john to little John, longest, never end
-like watching five Hamlets with different casting, alternative of same world
-liked ending but conceived at end of vid, this is what began this, liked conclusion
Right In Two
-wow is this vidder angry, fascinated
-put off at first (SPN), more outside footage was used, I'm angry too, shows why I'm angry
-angry at vid, God in heaven is not my god, not in my world, don't like narrowing down world to one religion to show
-saw it as absorbed in it, huh...religious kink of tortured, understand, dominated by Christianity
-connected to MB, most powerful in universe looking at it as this is fucked up
-from Castiel, moved into external, first though Sam'n'Dean go to killing fields, then sex, distressed, wasn't upset with vidder but uncomfortable
-every image was gang violence
-shot I liked: light with angel reminded of sun coming up
-all about canon of SPN, angels hate humanity, why should we care about these people as dirt
-hypocrisy, god wasn't watching anybody, Castiel doesn't lose fault but stomped on him, no higher viewer
-fuck quote, that's not true
When You Wish
-never saw it as nightmares come true
-that was fucked up
-maybe transform into happy place, loved slow, dark song
-some people do get happy endings, took each character's wish: here's how you get it, price you pay
-women who suffer, women's whose dreams killed
-darker in terms of discussion of fandom, BSG supplants natives with Hera, end up on grim note
Internet Porn
-YAY
-great palette cleaner
Convenient Parking
-I want to see this show
-wished for more Criminal Minds
-tainted donuts amv with Cowboy hunting Vash, live action version
-very well blended, high fannish osmosis recognized
-hard to know who to root for
Choose Life
-lots of possible ways that Dean's life could go
-completely turning around how on show, felt satisfied
-clips were from AU episodes but not sure
-dark vid with episode traps and allusions...diversity sucks
Swing
-feels response to discussion as two fandoms collide, on Uhura, celebrating of her kicking ass...
And that's what I've been working on for the last four days.
-
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
-pragmatic argument vs. don't have a right
-takedowns spark resistance: rock gods, teen boy bloggers and vidders -teen boy bloggers duct tape across mouths in videos on Youtube -Rock gods = drum solos of like music songs, takedowns, shoulder to shoulder with Rock Gods, we are their greatest fans, tell lawyers, post on Youtube, they said vidders aren't revolutionary: you can find my vids on iMeem, where you can find them on Youtube -
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
-
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
-
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
-counted clips to beats, they're doing it on one beat that
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
-bandom vids with Led Zeppelin,
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
-loved
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
-ensemble vid: acts of individual resistance to grow resistance, 1st chorus alone,2nd chorus has pairs and then spreads out
-personal struggles, vertical movement, im not alone, tunnel and jumping out
-Paul McCartney, Good, Give It Up; like
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
