Vividcon 2012 Vid Review Notes
Here are my Vid Review notes (Vid Review, In Depth, Challenge) for Vividcon 2012. I did my best at hearing and typing as accurately as I could but sometimes people had quiet voices or I couldn't type fast enough so these are not perfect transcriptions. If you see something and want it corrected (or credit), feel free to let me know as I'd love for it to be more accurate.
Intro vid
-One of the best vids of the show, matching color, time, beautiful cross universe vid, perfectly fit for this years theme
Raise Your Hand
-i really really like this vid, it captured the spirit of the source, gave each character a special moment
-it was a wonderful team building vid, it was in the narrative, you had to put together disparate elements visually
-kudos to people who made avengers vids with cam source
-as someone who expected a lot of marvel vids, it was not the same, they felt different, I was so seeing different aspects of the shows, yay thank you
-it was a vid about people coming together with their different backgrounds and interests and coming together to create something awesome
-i saw a lot of post club vivid vids, moved beautifully, point was aesthetics and fuck yeah, the avengers vids had fuck yeah plus characters plus a take plus narrative, new exploring of characters
60 Feet Tall
-i was talked out of seeing it, mad at them, she hits all the mens and I was okay with that, now I want to see it
-great movement between, a lot of connection between each other
-didn’t expect to see whats going on, missed the narrative, want to see it now
-are they working as recruiter vids, I didn’t know or care what the story was, I was interested in her
-having seen the source, not knowing whats going on is very true to the movie, movie did a good job with characters
-vid did interesting stuff with colors, I liked it, over saturated
Dilemma
-not the time to not put in a blurb with unfamiliar fandom
-a source I didn’t know, I got pleasure because I did understand the plot, understand the character, I got the pleasure of that, the good parts version of this movie
-i love the song choice, huge video camera, brining back in the 80s, I loved it
Fields of Coal
-i kind of liked this, I didn’t know what was going on but I was interested in whats going on, the characters were distinct because I knew the actors
-i really liked it, it gave you the dilemma for each character, people got a sense of that
-ive seen the show, I love the show and theyre all incredibly borked in the head, im freaking out but I have my tram and thats okay, it highlighted the ways theyre all demented, still felt like a team vid
-no other vid ive seen, whoa what is that characters story, it made me intrigued with all the individual characters
-i didn’t follow, different guys with all these storylines, couldnt put it together, firing guns at someone who im sure deserve it, to what extent does this works for someone who knows absolutely nothing, I didn’t get enough for me of what this story of
Forever Yours
-this is interesting, I deeply expect the epic feels, shes physically carrying her pairing over the goalposts, that being said, it was a little long for funny, if youre going to use that many songs, make it less long, less like five individual songs
-i thought it worked well with a lot of people, didn’t work at home but worked at a con vid, worked in a room full of people
-i really loved the medley aspect of it, I loved that there were many different parts, some of the parts were stronger than others, some weren’t as good, weren't as moving and hilarious, 3 LKBV or 2 comedies, some were beautiful
-this vid distilled everything I actually wanted to watch about house/wilson, it did run on too long for me, I felt whiplash between the different characters, it was more a compilation of the best moments of the sow
-the framing device of boy gets boy, boy loses boy, I shouldn’t have to do the work, have some anticipatory
-i did have that moment of how long is going to go on for, I didn’t know how long it’d go, I didn’t care about how long it’d go, it went along for the ride, if someones that driven you just go with it
-i like the sense of the creator in the work, theres more songs because theres more feelings, it really worked I got a strong sense of the creator vidwork
According to You
-song choice, so wrong its right, I couldnt stop laughing
-i really enjoyed this entire vid, the only thing I could criticize, couldnt tell what pov, as soon as it was Watson I could tell and it was in for it
-i wasnt laughing at the end of vid, it was a sucker punch, oh shit son
-you weren’t sad about that? Im not that into sherlock, he takes a header, its what he does
-i dont think that song led up to the vid, I dont appreciate the twist without foreshadow, it was a funny vid but then it wasnt
-i get that it was a self hate, it was too fast to make that move with 15 year old girl self hate song
-the watson parts was not as sharp as the joke, those pieces were really well done,i still laughed the whole way through but I still laughed at the end
-the initial pov was very muddled, it was not helped by the voice, took a while to get it
Let Me Put My Love Into You
-if this would have done by a guy we would be up in arms but because it wasnt, we weren’t up in arms
-you vid MY id, lots of smart things, I think we see this a lot with dudes and now we get to see this with guys and its hot
-it went on quite long so I had a chance to change my mind about it, women kicking ass yay, not something I enjoy with the end stuff, but wait its made by a women, I shouldn’t be feeling like this, no the source is still exploitation, then I let myself go this is really cool to watch and feel, I cannot get past despite the excellence of it
-the song choice gave me permission to enjoy it, its ac/dc It can be camp, I felt exploitative then she cut off the guys head and then it went to a fannish place with cutting someones head with a sword, not worried about getting my head cut off with a sword, not realistically happening to me so I feel better about it so it gave me permission to enjoy it
Hologram
-it was Tony/Pepper (Tony/Rhodey!), my feels, it had layers and characterization, really interesting angles to imagine him emotionally, great song choice
-to me it didn’t come across as a romance, it had Tony, Pepper, his support system, there was romance in it and thats not enough, romance without a love song, I love that with the Rhodey stuff as well, some people had that reaction as well, I love a love story without a love song
-i love the way sisabet cut Rhodey which I loved because I loved the first Rhodey better
-i loved this mostly about tony's epic manpain, tony felt he was as a cypher, ironman's suit at a hologram, it wasnt a group thing, tony kind of flickering, epic manpain
-i took it as Tony and tony's epic self centered manpain which has his reasons, which keeps him from connecting deeply, keep from connect from both pepper and rhodey, yearning to be out of the manpain
-we want it to go there, tony cant get there (now youre harshing my romance), he cant get there all the way, hes getting there, hes growing
-i couldnt with this, his manpain is so super serious, I couldnt connect to it, it seemed much more serious
Ljosis
-several things impressed me about this vid, first vid ever into Premieres, I respect the vidder understood new instruments is new characters, vids clearly about these two characters and two ships, there were times, sometimes too many clips, first was moya and I could have used 4 instead of twelve, id really clearly says, this is what this vid is even if its anvilly, better than a complete mess, I had respect to this vid
-we usually dont have clear vid for first vids ever
-i didn’t understand what the vid was saying, I tried to impose my structure on the vid, I didn’t get that it was Moya, I was waiting for them to have their babies, mostly I came away with was look at how pretty and looks cool
-i didn’t know if I liked it or not, I appreciated how committed it was, it had only four things, no one else in it, that really through me off, we do so much establishing of John alone, now we can get the opinion of them and thats not their entire story, it was odd, I love the commitment of them alone
-i was expecting a different structure, very happy to see them in leather pants again, john and aryn get together, they almost are the only ones in the universe, then things go horribly wrong, 1 and 2 but not three
-i am an anthropologically farscape fangirl, it is my show, one of the things I love is omg it ran the gamut, I much appreciated seeing the progression of aryn omg who are you get away, to I cant live without you, wanted to see progression, all the happy aryn clips here
-vid your id panel, that vid that thats what the vidder did, the ship, a boy and girl, there was no other layer, just enjoyment of that vid
-i dont know the source very well, I didn’t have expectations for it, I thought it was a nice romance, it had this intense sweetness, it would not work with lyrics, it would have been saccharine, it didn’t tell, it showed
-it was a poem, there wasnt a second act, but a beautiful poem first act
Laturus
-this vid, wow, this vid was made by a very smart person about very smart people, im going to watch this and chew on it, I need to see it 80,000 more times and then ill have things to say, wow
-ive been waiting for this vid for a very long time, I got it, im so fucking happy, it wasnt all of fringe, it was a piece, I havent seen this long and this beautifully
-i loved the dialogue in the beginning, it tends to step on the music but it didn’t here
-favorite vid of the show, was the dialogue anvillicious, I really loved that, I started making a story in my head, walter is god but hes an evil god
-rho has been hitting it out for me, this and astra vid, found interesting the length of the intro, the change in the music, the beautiful use of the font and the text, you didn’t feel the length of the dialogue, it was felt like a part of the vid, you were drawn to the spiral
-i have to geek out about fringe, how much its about consequences, talking about that spiral, the more you know the source, the clearer it became, didn’t retell fringe, told consequences of walter, you have an explosion and things spiral out of control, which is something fringe used to do well, it had a good take on it, walters actions had a series of consequences which led to the rest
-i had seen vid before seeing fringe, saw guy spinning things out of control, once you do know fringe, it becomes clear, works well without knowledge of source
White Rabbit
-i thought it was visually stunning, great surreal imagery, the overall tone and atmosphere pulled me in, pulled me into creepy world, the vidder did a really great job with building on traditions of maja shojo (sp?)
-i dont know the source at all, this was a song for my generation, someone made a music video for the song source, weirdly appropriate (beautiful song choice)
-perfect song for that vid, repeating footage if you dont know the source, I kind of got loss if there was a plot I was following, it seemed long without context
-i love the song that you knew the song but then it was a different version of the song, it made it more interesting that I was surreal
-fuck yeah in a post cvv way
-it worked for me because it was so psychedelic, psychedelic trips arenarent short (actually not long of a vid)
Masters of War
-my pairing got put on trial
-this was my reading of the show
-one of the themes was fuck yeah except this vid was fuck no
-ditto on that, I like that, yeah finally someones going to notice, at the end, we're the good guys, something about the actors delivery of the line, getting progressively darker and then it was like, no, if it was at the beginning I would have read it differently
-the rest of the vid everything else was consistent, john sheppard you creepy motherfucker, youre like a creepy killer robot
-this vid tapped into all my colonialism feels and I have a lot, I initially bonded with but then become disenchanted and then got another read on it
-heres the show I thought I was watching and then heres the show Im going to do, jarrows bsg vid
-i didn’t think there was a different show, it was an inditement of fandom, fandom actually believed it, that lightness fandoms reaction, the fact that people were willing to believe it was like shit
-it was interesting that ive seen from people who love the show, yeah this is whats going on and we like it anyway, people who wrote sga didn’t get it at all, I liked that it was done in a way I hadnt seen it done before
-having not watched sga, it was saying two different things, that line of dialogue clarified meaning, 1) our main characters were either on the side of the right side and people above messed up and 2) they were the problematic ones
Possession
-this song has been vidded a lot, it depends on how we've read the vid
-its not secret that if you vid girlkissing youre my new best friend, but beyond that it was beautiful, well constructed, but that song was this other vid for me, I was able to recontextualize it, it depends on the audience, what connection you have for the song, I thought it was gorgeous, the povs was very clear, I almost made out with brad afterwards
-due south fan of old, this vid owned this song, absolutely perfect for what its trying to say
-im super angry with this vid, I resisted for many years and this is going to make me see it, vivid sense of history, masterful use of song, painting fingernails black and YT and 15 but it worked really well in a serious way
-i got over the song very quickly because of the s&m feel, I had a problem with the double pairing, I had trouble going to the second pairing, no trouble understanding the possession narrative
Youre a Sweet Little headache
-i loved the highlander, it was great length of the song, liked seeing Lucy
-it was adorable, great song choice, the end confused me, the song was clipped at point of key change, probably a more apt description but she was definitely a headache
-(killa!), the young blonde character is immortal, the other character is mentally older, old fashioned person, the song suited them well, thats how lucy would describe her, a visit with an old friend
Grave
-de-disneyfied version of sleeping beauty, I really liked what this vid did with it, I dont know what it was going to be, focused on dark side of the series
-it really worked for me with how creepy it was, one thing that did not work was showing so much of the evil stepmother (milificent), seeing so much of the villain, part of creepiness was that mystery, if someone knows whats going on and happy about it, it didn’t work as well, I liked it at the end
-this may be nitpicky, going into the vid, describing it as Disney I was expecting something different, it took a little while to get into the narrative, the expectations through me off, it took harder to get into the vid
-as soon as I realized it was SB, I was absolutely there, the looks of laughing and SB walking, that was the creepiness right there, just laughing hysterically
-i hadnt realized that SB was the sleeping bride of Dracula
-i think there was a move here to recontextualize it as post anime, something for adults and not kids, ending... identity of stepmother, prince? Cue to why the brambles were coming backgrounds
-i felt clear on the ending, not going to end happily ever after, goes back to the place where shes in thrall, the princes kiss does not solve anything
Star Spangled Banner
-use of text in the beginning, have it up higher and have it long, have it be super super clear, didn’t think the quote was necessarily, lose the opening quote, the song carried all the meeting and more, the song choice had so much meaning, didn’t trust me to read the song, you let the work speak for itself
-i felt the quote was extraneous, I liked how it was done, didn’t have time to read it, I liked it, 3 words oh god its THAT quote
-i have not seen the source, listening to song, amazed how strong the characters were, they felt very honorable, it was to prove themselves, they moved forward, I loved positivity, it could have gone dark and didn’t
-i forgot it went into Taps, okay im there, im yours, I loved the ending, the planes sliding through the air with the guitar, the discordant guitar was gunfire, I know musically sensitive people have trouble listening to jimi hendrix, there is a nails on chalkboard, that doesnt help you if its difficult that you find it painful, a classic american counter cultural song
-this is a classic american song, not everyone knows it, if you understand music it makes its point, it is necessarily if you dont know it
-people who know the lyrics, you know the violence of the lyrics, not having the lyrics there but the imagery helped know what it was
The Lightning Strike
-i love this vid, still love it, contemporary fandom thats really popular, 13 episode not many people know, movie with controversy, it’d be EPIC FAIL, but it worked, in common, awesome boyfriends
-nicki can teach me history anytime, I love the artwork, it could have gone so wrong, it finished it was amazing and I looked at the name and went right, yeah
-i pay attention to art, it was fantastic, the vid created shivers, I loved the usage of the art and narrative, these stories have reflected the culture over so much time
-i spent the first third trying to find the third panel until I realized that alexander was also in since I didn’t realize the faces of the people
-i had a similar problem, I didn’t realize the modern kings, suddenly it makes sense, I also had a feeling it went on a little too long, with the art and then it went again
-she did use the straight quotes in the opening text, thanks killa
-she laid out the argument and then she nailed it by bringing in the statue and imagery that points towards epic cultural long shelf life of characters and story, I love how alexander is showed in mosaic, solidifies into cultural artifact, the fire still burning of relationships, the great boyfriend stuff and still burning of that strength of emotion, these stories continue on, even if they are solidified into stone or holy text or whatever
-i felt on fannish level, this is how stories were told in past, my fandom extends back through time, the way we read these stories the way they were read
Ramalama
-perfect song for fandom, the rhythm, the movement, the use of color, in the other world, saturation of forest, told great story, hope it’ll get more people watching
-the musicality, id still know it was their vid, the percussion and drum, evoked the fairytale world, gigantic top, the song choice was so much, so lovely
-this vid knew how to end, there was no waffling, oh im done now, this vid had an end and it built to this end, at the end: ohhh., I felt secure in vid, it didn’t drop me
-i wish the show was this good
-celebrated movement and color of show, it was a fuck yeah, I didn’t know these characters and I got to know them, they had to choose, the focus on the characters helped
-several sections of song, striding, singing sections, each section highlighted different parts of the world
-why I liked it, the percussiveness reminded me of chanting in wizard of oz, worked really well, I had this bjork moment of human behavior
Say Aha
-almost a cvv vid, still worried about the child and the cat, it was about narratively where I was with it, its ian, brilliant and well cut
-loved the build of this vid, these movies are awesome, by the back third, theres still more stuff you can use, a trajectory and a place to go
-on a visual level, the palette is limited and it could have been monochromatic and hard to watch but it wasnt
-so much to say, horror fandom yay, iconic moment where power loader comes up, he just flashes in the alien section, cool shit is coming and then it comes and its glorious
-i love this for a lot of reasons, I liked the viewers decisions to use the past history, it shows why she becomes the surrogate mother to boot
Girl in the War
-so many cliches song choice and this was a great, really subtle song
-i appreciated zooming in on that particular story, even though the I was Raylan, the main character is the girl, it did zoom in, I thought it had great focus, it was tender and I dont get to see Justified being tender
-i didn’t know the source but song helped take me as a story
-i could follow the song even though I dont know, I had a visceral negative reaction when the girl was abducted, the lyrics or something treated it very casually, something about the words of the song, did not happen in a dramatic song, it just felt off to me
-i liked the song, I missed the end of the song, the end of the song is incredibly beautiful and has emotion and beautiful and I was like come back, dont fade out, very disconcerting
-for me the song corrected my reading, with girl in trunk, it looked like procedural, then it was law, I went through genres, gun had symbiotics of murder, I hear concern but I processed it differently
-glad for Loretta vid, knowing the song goes to an emotional place, I wanted more of an emotional place, it was missing the climax, she reaches an emotional place in the show, still happy for Loretta vid
-im not familiar with the source, okay I know that guy, I got emotional for her, you can do it, make it to the end, thanks for getting me emotionally involved
Long, Long Time Ago
-it was very pretty
-i may be the only person who actually knows this vid, this is a dali disney collaboration, I felt it didn’t recontextualize anything or change anything, im glad she did a 7 minute source and did the vid, she didn’t go anywhere deeper, boy and girl, face melting into gaia?, disappointed
-watching the vid, the first time, I tried to look for plot but I got the genre of a pimping vid
-the vid reminded me of fantasia, I wasnt sure if there was a deeper story, it was pretty and the music was lovely, cut well to that, that was the music it was intended to
-i had a similar reaction, I didn’t know what was going on, really lovely and gorgeous to watch
-i didn’t feel the point was narrative
-there was a time when premieres got grimm, all the fun stuff went into cvv, it was nice to see it come back, to come back with fuck yeah, beautiful art objects
-i knew of this and ohhh this is it, this is it, great pimping vid, what are those faces, my problem with dali
Smack My Bitch Up
-this vid is beautifully edited, I found the use of both versions to be extremely distracting, then wtf is daniel craig is there, I found it distracting, I think it was very distracting, didn’t realize two versions were in this for some, which of the girls was that
-i really liked it, sensitive to violence against women, smack my bitch worked because about guys who hate women, both worked for me because its many women not just one, the plurality worked for me, when it started I was like oh no, but I didn’t feel assaulted by violence against women, journey how she becomes this smacker, complicated journey in her own right
-i thought it was very beautiful, very artful, theres two parts to it, music really changes, I didn’t know it was the same vid, music goes to different place, music goes into first part, fire goes away in middle part
-speak to two different versions, it bothered me at first, okay, it was making her more and more schizophrenic, the visual expression got more and more ?, finally she was becoming the person, becoming the girl with the dragon tattoo, there was an image, girl carrying it, delaying the image, that thats actually a very seminal event
-i really disliked this vid, one I loathed the song and movie/books, I was confused, then I was thinking about it, the vid did what the vidder wanted, the music did what the vidder wanted, the movie retells the movies, doesnt say anything new but I think that was the vidders intention to make it really really unpleasant, I dont think it was meant to be pleasant, it did what it was supposed to do
-its not pleasant, men should like women it’d be a much nicer book, not a straight telling, its puts the focus on her and her story, I didn’t see the daniel craig version because I didn’t like the advertising, tried to make it about daniel craig didn’t want to see the movie to see about him, its all about the outcome of her, the outcome of domestic violence
-this song has all my high school feels, she owned it with the titles, I squeed, felt forceful and planned, could have been passive, if im not acting against you, im planning it, this is my story if you dont know that youre an idiot
Evening Waltz
-we thought it was Greece but it was Scotland, instrumentals are hard
-not the most brilliantly cut vid but I love this movie and I love that somone vidded it, makes me want to watch the movie again
-i couldnt tell if it was scotland and greece
-my narrative was there was a lot of new immigrants to scotland, passionate greeks are hanging out with these dodgy scottish
-i know movie well and I love it, know vidder, the vid would have been better served to use lyrics to help viewers see signposts especially in a con setting
Non Plaustra Vadel
-all seven movies, in a bow, what is the vid is saying that the movie isnt saying, didn’t get that, I was looking for a read, I didn’t get a read, movies film message: this is an magical place where awesome things happen
-this is an incredibly layered vid, you dont have to go through any layers to get an appreciation its an awesome universe vid, felt like Lum's ??(end of the world?) buffy vid, summation of canon, pulling it out, not just linear, a lot of subtlety and cross stuff, underneath what appears to be effortless, I adore this vid, incredibly epic and had all the things that were right, all the things that were rich and wonderful about the world
-i havent seen many HP vids, I was looking forward to it, first I thought it was going to be a harry vid but awesome neville, and then was happy this one was harry
-wonderful synthesis, the music choice helped, song of generation, I felt embraced about this vid
Rude Boy Resort
-song choice was outstanding and it really, really fit, it fit well with the magazines
-this was my favorite vid of the con, im fairly shallow and this is the one vid that made me want to vid
-im not sure if this came through, a lot of really subtle connections, tony get thrown by whiplash, his story of growth as a person
-mashup worked really well, the two pieces of it, the song choice was beautifully utilized
-whiplash, that sequence came from edited sequence, we talked about how movie vids retell movie, it wasnt, it wasnt random, I remember that part and its perfect
How It Ends
-captured movie, essence itself
-the lyric of how it ends, when first employed, this ends badly, I was kind of braced that this song was so sadly, oh no what happens to this little boy, the tone changes, eventually how it ends it ends in an embracing way, I had a little bit of whiplash, that was the effect on me, I was worried for the child, the song played me, you know this ends, it did not do that, took me to a happy place
-for me this actually added the emotion that I missed from the movie which was somewhat shallow, this vid added all the emotion, the vidder gave the movie all the emotion
-put together very well narrative, I didn’t have to concentrate very hard
-song choice really did that work with what the movie actually wanted to do, brought through the emotions that the film failed
-i think what the vid did what the film didn’t do, it got bogged down by the film stuff, let the vidder take that out to focus on the emotional
Everything is Wrong
-favorite vid of the con, lots of troy/abed, havent seen britta, loved it with the beginning bagel and ending bagel
-vidders love of character showed through loud and clear, because she did it twice to show the (other people??), the others are feeling the same thing, yes its clearly a character study but yes theres the ensemble
-moving, one of the three vids that made me cry, britta is you and you are okay
-community is one of my favorite shows but they dont know what to do with britta, show what britta can be, best britta vid no matter whatsoever
-i already identified with britta but even more and had all the feels, holy shit im britta and thats okay, I cant talk about her anymore
-its a really sort of nice, this is how we're meant to read her, this is how the writers want us to vid her and this is how I want to read her
-...does character study do so well, fall in love with, understand the character, moves like so pure, everything what a character could be
Games
-i have seen all of Sherlock, I liked the vid, I like how it moved, there was a story I didn’t quite get, not smart enough for the vid, something intentional that I didn’t get, on the surface level, beautiful, color and working for the source
-i was super distracted by the song, why am I having weird associations, when her album came out, there was so many songs to that sherlock vid, this vid was cut a lot better than YT vids, this vid is excellent took out oh god lana
-i dont know, same reaction, light flashing, rocks, what am I not getting with repeated images, beautiful, moved emotionally, thought there was something else, im stupid
-dont like sherlock, love this, to me thats exactly what it delivered, im making up a story, I love the dissonance of the music, thats how you do a tonal and jarring, it was one of the highlights of the show for me
-this was a huge watson vid, hand being still, him falling into these dangerous situation, the gateway drug into this
How I Got Over This
-devastated, on the floor, from not knowing source, it worked wonderful, could follow
-I cried and cried and cried
-the wire is all about the system of the city, s4 didn’t take it just from the center, it gave me the kids story, it was so heartbreaking, see all of these kids narratively
-trying to figure out where the focus was, there were two characters, oh there are a lot of focuses, made for people who’ve seen the wire
-i hadnt seen this season of the wire, you’ll want to see it after this (hl told), I want more of this, the cool thing is seeing enough of the standard well known story of kids struggling and mentors helping out, accessible to everyone but doesnt feel worn out
-the vid undercuts the song, if only someone would care, at end you see frustrated adults who care, animals trapped sign, internal text signals theme, if source provides you with thematic theme, use that really effective, great example of having the source do work
Carry On
-it was hard dealing with the lack of footage from the avengers, it circles around, so much heart, felt appropriate in heart vidshow, steve is the heart of the avengers, still an avengers hole in the middle, its like a donut
Imma Gonna Be
-where has this vid been, it was done perfectly, songs from the show can be hard but it did well
-especially in a fandom that is so so pairing centric, delight to see such a smart character study, one that gets to you everything about her that you feel about her even when you want to smack her
-dont stop believing gave you all the feels when it hit that, accidental loner with brave and ambitious, they brought her with her but they brought them with her, I loved the real slushie in beginning and then the fake one
-i loved the tone of the vid was different, it felt like an emotive stretch for her, she brought all the tech to it but the change in tone was different and I loved it
Real Wild Child
-short, emotional and fun, great song
-disappointed, I was excited about her, used static shot of kenzi and it went on but wheres the cutting, the song was trying to carry everything, I didn’t think it did everything, didn’t see the wildness
-shes not just awesome, there was a lot more that could have been shown, more put in there
-theres room in the universe for a deeper character study
-i had a little bit of the same reaction, I love it, love kenzi, slow static, its hard because they have no budget, the character inside, people wanted more, when chainsaw came people laughed, the show couldnt support it
Anything For Love
-A+++
-when I saw the song and fandom I thought, really?, when vid started it was about vidders I was like, really?
-okay its a Thor vid but then there was so much more and they didn’t spoil it with the blurb and I appreciate it
-have my friends lost their mind
-i come away with themes, what we do with for and with each other, what we create when we talk each other into doing the things we do, the meta, love, facepalming
-intensely personal and intensely communal reaction to the vid, laughing my ass off at vid, thinking about listening to epic AU hockeyfic, watching shows for people who dont know, great to have personal reaction, this is all of us, that was brilliantly
-this is naomi and cesperanza but its everybody, ended with thor/loki..headesk, pull back to actual headdesk
-this is so specific to vidders and yet its also communal and all of our experience, dubcon vid to feels, I love “how are you making me write” how much I can see my own friends do that, I love how relatable
-the first vid I ever saw with outside of source, blakes 7 source, a lot of explicit fannish stuff
-reveal after reveal, matched really well with the first vid in the first vid
-coming after naomi dressed up as thor it was really funny
-i loved the reference to no we wont do tumblr
In Depth Vid Review
Barton Hollow
-one of the strongest premieres, really difficult decision, went with mutually instinctual, interesting because one familiar and the other is not, was recruited to watch this show
-as someone whose seen source and familiar with vidder, eunice pushed herself very hard to make this, usually squeeful, worked on multiple levels, theres the technical composition, very reflective of both vidders styles, tonally unusual
-narrative was easy to follow, broken people and they have issues, and then there were drugs, I want to know more about what is going on, I love the song choice is like a prayer, very religious motivation behind the main character
-religion is very important for characters except for carrie, there is religious imagery to show motivations, “please forgive me father” is being cradled by abu nazir, after torturing, becomes father figure, literal father figure because actual figure, river is actually …, deeply personal, carrie has a different reaction
-i like how in the middle of the song, mirrored by the same feeling, quiet in episode and then everything blows away and the song resumes being more driven
-the explosion, the mirrored explosions, that was there breaking, he wasnt broken until the child dies, he had not gone over
-someone on death row but not being forced, self-inflicted death row, forgive me father
-he is used for political gain by the devil, cut from brody in car to brody not in car, surveillanced always wherever he goes
-how much I love that this was a duet, familiar with the song, beta, seen show, always shiver when carrie gets her own verse, the duet is there throughout, its just backing into that middle point
-her verse is washing in the river which is not an optimistic version of that scene but we dont know what happens after (no source yet), internal choreography of the clips, its like being in that river, attention to detail is fantastic, percussive musicality, its punching but never pulls you around, I love aesthetic as much as narrative and emotionally
-music stops for last shot and its haunting, shivering
-theres a lot of buildup of tension, builds up for an explosion that doesnt happen, theres no release, its not going away
-completely blown away (didn’t know the source), I didn’t know the story and I couldnt figure it out, I could feel there was a story there, I could feel the structure of the vid, I got the very very basic outline, sense of tension, completely recruited, overwhelmed by characterization
-the pill as a framing devise, its not drugs, it helps her maintain drugs, it helps build the tension, what happens when these pills run out
-i got more of carrie trying to find something about this character, it took some viewings, woman driven to find out the truth but shes got her own problems
-carrie is CIA with homeland security, theyre both very similar and traumatized, I kind of ship it, you can see how it works, for awhile they do help each other, thats why the middle part is so..
-she lets things just breathe, you get a chance to just exhale, still amazed by last clip, letting it breathe (isnt it enough she killed a dog, now she kills a kid)
The Adventure
-what makes this so successful?
-i had read all of the descriptions, its going to be a harry vid, its NEVILLE, thats awesome because it wasnt made clear in the movies, but neville was almost harry, its so uplifting, he start out as this dorky boy, not very good at magic, crazy grandma, gets in the background, rock on neville!, it has this great moment of killing the snake, she connected the smoke to Voldemort blowing up, it makes that moment even more powerful
-i found it very satisfying, youre not the only person whose actually lost people
-appreciate the opening, harry was not in the opening, hard to establish universe without showing harry, garfield without garfield, all these things neville was there as well, taking iconic shots to show neville, harry flips out of water, cuts to neville watching him, never see neville react to it, there were all people there, like xander s6, seeing how neville is responding to and wants to be a part of it
-i didn’t think I would cry more but I did, entire row was feels, song choice was spectacular, growing as a person, he tries so hard to be so brave, he gets recognition for that, his confidence grows so much, as the song builds
-showing the universe, the pacing in there, I was like like okay this is a Harry Potter vid, the timing on Neville, suddenly emotional as music starts to rise
-two structural reasons: upsetting your expectations, aww neville, with the opening, interesting and powerful choice, subtext of the vid is neville ?, you have this story being told neverless chronologically, hes the one stepping forward again and again, neville has so much more fear even when hes going up against snake and not voldemort, you see him gaining the power for him over time, already see him waking up, see him out of the regular chronologically of the vid then sees the sword, the conclusion of the vid is always in my head, know the ending will be using the sword, hes been the comic relief, he becomes the one who wins it for them, hes the reason harry can do the flip, hes the one who brings harry back, he allows harry to kill voldemort
-reverse of the sga, this is the revisionist history, this is the story thats actually being told, theres this concept that the entire universe is actually about neville, its not really about harry, it kind of came out it was harry, neville was the one who made the choices, pulling out the real story
-talking about the moment at the end, I agree with the building up to it, the thing that made it so powerful was all the heroism of being ordinary, not being the sword, struggling with it, being the bully, people not taking you seriously , the payoff is the actual heroism but the heroism is there the whole time, this and laura's ? vid, him being part of the community, everything exists to bring harry in the forefront, in front of the mirror seeing his parents and no one sees it, neville steps forward there, my role is to be secondary and thats what I doing
-i thought the prophecy was quite interesting where it was right in the middle, do you read this as the au as neville being the boy who lived, where harry ultimately surrenders to destiny, be the vehicle for predetermined, neville has to achieve all of that through a force of will, him creating his own destiny, him stepping forward and gaining the courage, this isnt his destiny, its him pulling the sword from the hat, doing it from his own will
-the thing I really love is it doesnt commit the same wrongs that the books/movies do, completely glorify harry, community happens based around plot, harry needs community based on plot, community is present, the purpose is to help him be who he wants to be, enrich his person, I need my friends to check my friends and move on, hey look neville's awesome but he has friends with real community roles, the family he didn’t have
-it didn’t feel au to me, this is exactly how I see neville, I hate destiny and prophecy so I love free will, I thought it’d be instrumental all the way, im going along the chorus, the chorus was drilling myself into my brain
-what would have happened if neville had been marked, not au, he would have been successful harry that they answered, he steps into that role in the toughest role at hogwarts but neville actually wanted to do
-most successful, sequence of neville as comic relief is not chronological, see him foolish and then you see him moving background helping, his cheering, his presence is useful and then you see later stuff of him being useful behind the scenes, then you get the series of teaching, being supported, encouraging, eyerolling at lockheart, growing because people have faith in him, in room of requirement he see his leadership developing, the placement of the sequences helps propel you forward
-my lifes waiting to begin in front of the room of requirement, thats where he begins and becomes the person
-its so effective because neville is a character we deeply identify with, we were made fun of, we came into our own, rallied our community around us to make us all better, why this vid worked so well in this room of people
-i didn’t have a physical reaction watching at home but did here
-kills snake is triumphant, most likely to be a cry point, when he wins the house cup because of him, its important that it ends on the shot of baby neville because it was there all the time, she did well for neville, start somewhere specific where shes not useless, he has that inner strength
-i can see how the vid could have been structured to be neville vs. harry, I like how it didn’t do that, this is neville's story, I trust you will see the references, if you showed it to someone who didn’t know canon they wouldn’t necessarily know
-i love the emphasis on the sorting hat, it picks him for hidden courage and bravery, it keeps coming back
-oh cool the end's all about neville (didn’t read 7th book)
-i thought it was cool to see ron with his goaltending moment and they had that similar not in the sun
-she balances light and dark really well and thats what makes the vid a very emotional vid, inspirational and low moments, by the time the end hits, shes just wrung it out of you completely, she does that in vids generally well but all the stuff there is to identify with neville
-FUCK YEAH NEVILLE!
Challenges
Jag Svar
-holy shit, my life is complete, I fear next year
-how about the theme of transformation in that one? *laughs*
Hole in my Soul
-did you guys know that bruce waynes parents are dead?
-i wanted to laugh but I wasnt sure if I could laugh because I think thats canon, the manpain is canon, excellent closer for the nolan movies or satirical, are those opposite reactions
-damaged, catastrophic is the best encapsulation, love it flashed across the screen
Martin Scorsese
-i dont have a whole lot to say, in a room full of super amazing vid, this is the vid of the con, this is amazing, It touched me, I cant, flail, flappy hands
-she sat me down and made me watch the original michael bolton which made this work so much better for me
-i heard all these people gasping and laughing, watching in a language I did not understand, I was completely lost (never seen martin scorsese)
-picture of director makes movies with lots of drugs, guns and then he makes a movie about a little kid who builds robots, im like what, where did this come from, this is why characters from other movies were like what
-i loved this one as much, its a lonely island parody, theyre going to have michael bolton interrupt them with jack sparrow in their tough rap
-martin scorsese wife liked it so much and then he made it so his son could watch
Jar of Hearts
-so everyone was laughing through out this and I was like final? girl FEELS, I dont understand, they have a story they have an arc, this is important
-whats going on, then I went over the lyrics, this is hilarious before everyone started laughing, then it got to the part you dont get to take me back, I really loved it, strangely uplifting
No Longer Viable
-NCIS:LA with that dude I always forget, wait what did I mistake him for mel gibson, then it went on, that actress was in that film, wait is this going to make out a deep cover op for heavy, oh god
-he played a male character and then he's also in, transformation, she died and changed gender, when I say deep cover op thats a little shallow
Dead and Gone
-i loved the neville vid, the way they reacted to that, this was the vid of my heart for game of thrones, I love arya, I love the story that was told, dead and gone losing her wolf
-the lyrical interpretation, I looked through the east, so important, north dead and family and jon snow, really good
-i thought it was a really good song choice, someone who knows how the story continues, could have waited, dont you understand?
-quite liked it, you read the books you know whats happening, you dont need to see it for it to work
-havent read the books, transformation is ongoing
Not Done With My Changes
-although the lyrics got blurry towards the end, it worked well the pacing, two sounds worked well together
-i found the experiment not very successful, I have a problem with the reader of the poem, that sense of reading just ended badly, its like a bad version of the song you knew very well, I could process the words but I kept wincing over them
-i loved the idea of the spoken word, yes the images, cheesy, it was the words and story that was the important thing
Shake It Out
-im still shaking from that vid, its going to become heart of essays that I write, I just, im completely in awe someone vidded the colonialism, underlie the avengers, superhero, shape everything we dont include, the fact that we include, it seemed to be about the romance and the white settler and native women, avatar movie, penetrating the land, horrible things will happens, its kind of okay because we got the good things, then it said no, this is what the story is actually about, we cant go back and change it, take off my skin, native women being dressed, I was already crying, completely over at that point, the brutality of that actual story and carved from us what we actually live in, whoever made this vid, im going to grab you and talk to you for hours and hours
-obvious and valicous?, obtrusive with external source, story is so common, beaten over head everyday
-thats not true, new stories are not told well, told badly......
-i would disagree, I thought external source was extremely important, it wasnt educational, I know that, I work with kids that live every day, it was powerful and im glad its going to happen
-i really liked the balance of the controlled transformation, all lay hands and becomes her transformation, conflicted about with the romance and sex scenes lingered, fetishize her naked body, the vid itself indulged that awhile, we're so pretty or we're on her side, maybe didn’t pull back enough
-apologies all around
-it wasnt going far enough...i feel that about manskill park
Future Proof
-i liked the movie, I like the editing
-i havent seen the movie, drew the most emotional response out of me, the pacing and the visuals really got to me, I really liked the music, music choice has been amazing
The Work We Do
-i really liked this vid, I didn’t understand the time code, feel like I was missing the part of the story with that vid
-the clips used in the vid, its all out of order, in that way kind of constructed reality, the clips are coming from all over the place
-jeeves and wooster is how someone explained what slash was, he took care of him all the time does it matter if theyre the same sex, so close to sleep together, wed call it romantic if it was m/f, it ingrained it in me
-it was a synthesis of the different comments, I felt like it was a combination of the all the steps that led to the clips and the technically bringing it to me, I could see what theyd bring it together and what theyve meant to their history
Always the Women
-its the Irene Adler vid
-i did not find the song choice worked for me, I have come to see it as diminutive, the women as kitsch(?) She kills with a smile yes but it looks like a great song but in practice it wasnt, I wanted a different song because of the way the song means for me
-i agree the song didn’t treat women as strong...
-ive always had the opposite reaction to it, I think it was a good song choice
-it was the canon view, set the view as she is the one exceptional THE women, carries with it 18th century perspective, the song works for that, it doesnt update it sufficiently for the room
What I Am
-amazing vid, song didn’t work against it but didn’t work for it, seemed dissonant
-i love that vid, I need to see it again, trying to foreshadow the avengers, not sure why there was only that one shot of tony and then it went back
-ironically I loved this songs choice, she said what I am? No thats awesome for the help! You never can tell
-nooo I dont know too many things, hes a super genius, you cant play that voice, hes too smart, too everything else – Imma let you finish but Beyonce
He Called Me Baby
-awww, oh this was sad
-i liked how it worked with how death and lust could be transformative, this woman's life was transformed by the life of her person
-death and transformation are together
Summer of 69
-i wrote down, so clever, I want to sit down with this and just, pick apart all the confusing bits of that season that were so awesome
-standing on my mama's porch, river to amy!
-im a big fan of the version of this vid that was set to the 10th but now glad theres an 11th one
-A+++
-when I saw the song and fandom I thought, really?, when vid started it was about vidders I was like, really?
