Vividcon 2012 Panel Notes Part 2
Here are the rest of my panel notes for Vividcon 2012. I did my best at hearing and typing as accurately as I could but sometimes people had quiet voices or I couldn't type fast enough so these are not perfect transcriptions. If you see something and want it corrected (or credit), feel free to let me know as I'd love for it to be more accurate.
This is part 2 as there was too much great discussion for one post of LJ to handle.
Let My Lyrics Go
-easier to follow an instrumental vid, have context, images and lyrics, only follow the first two so its easier
-its easier with text on the screen
-hard to follow because im word oriented so its hard to find out whats happening unless I know the context well, just because there aren't lyrics doesnt mean there aren't words
-great breadth of dialogue from source, words on source, words in source, no words whatsoever, worked varying amounts
-words say sorry but you make it mean soaring because you can't hear the words
-i find lyrics liberating as a vidder, with lyrics I need to have it match the lyrics so its hard to resist that, easy to work with
-instruments I find lyrical now (word oriented), terrified at first, I edited out the bridge, etc, once I made a lot of vids and then I felt comfortable moving away from the reliance of the lyrics, this gives me the opportunity to do something the lyrics aren't letting me do
-as a watcher, I found that instrumental vids with orchestral music, I had to have them cut slower than rap music with orchestral I had trouble processing the sounds and ...
-instrumental version of pop song vs. other instrumental pure, even though you cant hear the words, I have to keep in mind that there are some people who know the words but not everybody so I have to keep balance so that it's not completely different, I like to think of instrumentals that even though there are no words, each instrument is its own voice
-smooth criminal: I wish I didn’t know the lyrics of the song so well
-can disconnect from knowing the actual lyrics so I just ignore the lyrics
-I didn’t know the lyrics to smooth criminal, to me it sounded like the partners in crime theme, all these cool clips, this is a sherlock vid, I got to the end and theres that brush at the end and I was like dude this rocks, this is a Moriarty vid
-I have no problem making a 4min instrumental vid, I follow the music but when I have a vid that has lyrics, I want to cut the lyrics because I want to match the bridge to the lyrics, I cant just follow the music, I need the lyrics so I like to do one or the other
-circles vid: each character is a different instrument, you can see the MS storyline but if not it looks like peter and the wolf and ive always loved that
-its hard to edit long songs for instruments, cant make a 10 min vid for that
-choice of music: emotive music, like destina's you look for the build, does it work because it has lyrics or if im having an emotion to it
-i enjoyed the style of music, didn’t realize how much it worked for laughter, youre not missing the joke because you cant hear the lyrics, more pure emotion and enjoyment, audience is not drowning out the joke
-music without lyrics can have its own emotional flow and its own lyrics that go in a way you dont want it to go, its like jarrow: love turns 40, long bridge with long build thats an instrumental, one of the best examples of instrumental vidding
-one music was set in spanish colonial so I was looking for that kind of music, next song I was looking for something with a build and a letdown and a lot of instrumentals do that, I dont vid feeling a lot but when I vid instrumentals its one of the few times I do
-theres certain keys that have more emotion to them, major keys are happier, minor keys are sadder
-ex. Your Hand in Mine - Explosions in the Sky
-immediately Friday Night Lights (made for show), has 6/8 so its very recognizable, not used in rock songs, it has a real flow to it, shape of musical ? are different from a 4/4 time? (argument over this)
-one instrument and then another joins and then another joins, hear the build very clearly, what I saw was space, spaciousness and expansiveness, more things coming in and coming together
-i have a source footage and an idea in mind, I want to tell this story but I dont have a song that tells this story, curious to know if others feel that way
-found my music by googling, saddest music ever saxophone
-knowing soundtrack gives you a tone for the show, due south with lorena and sarah, when you make the vid you can use that song, the soundtrack gives you an idea for the soundtrack of the vid
-wanted to vid amelie, the soundtrack is so exactly right, id feel weird vidding the soundtrack but its so distinctive, vid it to rap!
-i like to vid the opposite, whats the opposite of the soundtrack
-i got the feeling of very small, very private, character study for jane austen
-ex. Hall of the mountain king - Apocalyptica
-james bond!
-everyone has a different association but once you put it to pictures, most people will associate them together
-funny, unexpected, action oriented, classical song and current rock juxtaposition, I went to thor, old structure to new
-i would have done a comedy vid to that, surprises you
-jim carrey as the grinch
-the incredibles
-quick cuts, moving and then the classical came in, horses riding into the forest
-metaclopyse (sp?)
-cartoon with the speed, cowboy bebop or ?
-comic book vidding, get away with panel cutting with classical music
-classical music can be so epic which makes it funny
-what your audience listens to, what theyre familiar with, vidding fandom tends to listen to same things vs. christian norway (Thor!)
-tangled vid to william tell overture: not just overture, but also lone ranger, its about the horse
-ex. Invasion of Torushina by Yoko Kanno
-new bourne movie
-vampires with manpain
-descent into something
-give me an oscar!
-grim determination, funeral but moving forward in the face of death (vampires with manpain)
-6/8, im on the horse moving forward, dark journey, going into mordor, its not going to be good
-lord of the rings, kept repeating, maybe its less epic, more parody of someone in pain (dean crying over and over)
-it has to be large scale or about a person who feels like theyre epic
-trailer with cheesy text flying
-tears destroy the world
-ron swanson eating a steak in slow motion!!
-ex. Emergence by Trifonic
-fringe vid, walter fringe vid (with typography)
-a lot of typing, little robots
-mystery, sounds that get your attention but not long enough to last
-sounds very modern, very action, jarring to use for something modern or a mystery (not period drama)
-leverage, parker descending on a cable
-modern version of the 80s training montage
-it sounds techno like the 80s, sounds retro-moderns
-group does a lot of found noise, doors closing, nontypical instrumentation, interesting texture
-probably not a character study or ship, like blade runner, lots of adds around the city, character walking through a city, landscape vid
-sga vid used not instruments but noise, I did one with just breathing
-i dont listen to instrumentals, where to find?
-i look for it, ask friends, its a worthy goal to make, it can open you up creativity, if you have concept, go looking for it
-from soundtracks from other things, while watching tv and movies, usually tend to be short
-certain music is tied closely to certain genres, different crossover music takes you quickly into another genre
-dont try to listen to pacherbell's canon (sp???)
-ive been more vidding a song first versus a character or ship, hook shot, watched a terrible bradley cooper movie, loved that song played, im going to d/l this song legally because this song is so amazing, its changed my life, I need to vid this somehow
-strengths is open to open interpretation, imagination can go awry, pull out storyline that hits you the hardest
-weakness: you dont have words that mean things to people, dont have structure to vid around, you have to do a lot more work to build a structure that works towards the vids, a lot of vids that used a lot of words other than lyrics, adding structure and cue words saying think this, difference between lyrics, vocals and words you read on the screen
-it frees you up, cant cut on a new line, can cut always on the same line, need to find a rhythm, couldnt find it in some vids, now I know what a film editor does
Vidding as a Second Language
-vidded different language source so wanted to vid that music as well, feel awkward as if im making some kind of statement, spain source to Argentinean song, is that bad, is that faux pas
-is there some cultural association with english songs that I miss as well
-with english vidders, much less reluctance to use any song even if pov doesnt match source, different language
-if source is foreign, people feel more pressure to be careful, not such thing as not a foreign language song because its always foreign to someone
-i vidded a song to Firefly that was Japanese (jpop), nicki pointed out that firefly is chinese that I might want to point out that I'm aware
-would someone point out a british song to an american fandom
-archaic finnish for x-files, egyptian love song for stargate, latin music for ?, cultural stuff was part of the reason why I vidded it
-i feel uncomfortable using a song if I cant find translation thats good with song, dont want to use political song until I know what theyre about
-i did an Italian folk song to farscape, could pick out a few things, liked sound for show, thought title suggested something, I had bad english translation, how much was I was going to let the lyrics translate what I would do for it, or treat voice as instrument, wanted to keep it somewhat similar
-had two audiences to think about: people who know Italian, romance languages and people who had no idea
-people who have chinese characters as tattoos, we dont do that in chinese, theres no girl power on arm, literal translation is not enough, lot of context, tattoos bug me, the music, the tone of the music would guide you a lot, its not just the transcribing, its the tone of it
-put up disclaimer that I dont speak either of these languages, I know general idea, cant do line by line match, people commented it wasnt quite what it said
-i was beta for vid, was this lyric saying this? And she said kind of maybe
-for latin, I went long by line, finnish was like instrumental
-gaelic metal (old gaelic version), voice is just another instrument because theres no way to understand it
-do you wish people would vid more foreign language sources?
-i dont know, I can just relate to French, ive vidded a French Canadian song, song is about veterans, the story is someone telling a story of seeing a war, when showed parents they understood this vid (light went on) versus english vids
-if they respect the language and showed they understood it, its good. If they vid chinese to a japanese song and see no difference, thats a problem
-(milly's parents) a lot of the meaning was because of that connection to lyrics in another language, the whole communication was a fit but if the other person didn’t know the language even if they tried they might not have the fit as well
-lyrical interpretation wasnt a big concern when I started vidding because I didn’t know english as well, it was more music and video
-do you have viewers in mind when making a foreign language song vid? Vid it like an english song?
-from coming to vvc, even a song in english, people will parse it in different ways, I respond really strong to lyrics but not everyone does, I make the lyrics available to each vid, it was not that different except I knew most people would not be listening to lyrics
-i inserted cultural stuff because my audience was mostly american, it didn’t occur to me that some viewers wouldn’t associate it with some meanings, the red flowers have an important meaning of being veterans day, you know what it means in canada, explosions to poppy transition, didn’t know people wouldn’t get remembrance day, didn’t get it to 2 weeks ago
-the culture can be very important and the language can highlight
-chinese vid to chinese movie, a reviewer said the plot didn’t develop comparing it to house of flying daggers, okay this is real history with a lot of meaning, completely different than something fictionalized, its important that the film follows the way the history happens
-buffyann!!!!: the way you feel words when its your language, you feel it naturally, you have to think about more, insulting on another language doesnt feel as offended as much, you have to think a lot about the lyrics, make sure theres no hidden meaning, you know you’ll lose people with the foreign language, you have to give them something else, use the voice as well as thats familiar music, all the stuff the voice carries with it (emotion, etc)
-lost vid to french song, High Tide, used image of the water coming in as the flow of emotions, she knew not everyone would get the lyrics, its sad that you connect to it a lot through the lyrics and its sad that others who dont speak it wont get it the same way
-for Red Cliffs, people didn't get the context, dont get the historical context, it makes me sad, cant control it
-watch it and thats it but if people like it, they may still read the translation or see the movie and get it explained to them, saw an AMV for german song, better to pretend its an instrumental because the lyrics are corny and dont match it
-french translation, especially literally, can sound really corny, all the words have a lot of meaning, when you transcribe, its really cheesy while in french its beautiful especially the sound of the voice
-even archaic finnish I tried to keep it somewhat relevant to the theme, I made sure there was a vague thematic
-Laura provided subtitles for her Hiro vid to a Japanese song
-it was hard to cut it because I couldnt tell if it was the end of a sentence
-ive subtitled before, I dont have it as the default because I put so much into the visuals and music and as soon as you put the subtitles people will look at that and not the other stuff
-i watched a mark/eduardo song in spanish, I liked that it wasnt just subtitles across the bottom, it was in different places but it directed your attention to different places, to show where the main attraction, became part of the artistry of the vid
-movie that did that, night watch that put text in it, whispers you see it fade away into shades of blood, better than blank white subtitles, it removes you from the vid
-had the opposite reaction, very used to amv subtitles, I can separate and ignore the actual text, it was a distraction, I couldnt do the switching off that I would normally do, it was because of timing, its hard to keep your attention
-when im watching something with subtitles, im still trying to hear and understand the words, the words are separate to me, watching night watch, I cant understand it audibly, im already watching visuals so its not like 3rd thing thats going on
Shadows of Fog
-what do you mean when you say horror?
-any vid that uses horror as it's source: universal monsters, I work in nostalgia with horror
-horror as genre of your vid: a lot of vids that were scary or deeply disturbing, I had a hard time watching
-horror extends back to literature, campfires, its not just serial killer cutting some person up, you're talking about an other that comes to break up the status quo, german word: ?, unhomelike, no real english translation, basis of horror
-i want ALL the horror vids from various sources
-what are some things that you think that horror brings to a potential vid?
-the way the setting works as an aesthetic, it can be so oppressive, a vid in the show was not showing me what I wanted to see, the moment in horror when you know the bad guy is behind them and you cant see it, one vid that doesnt let me see, setting atmosphere
-catharsis by proxy, be part of it, but know you can survive it, break up the nervous tension
-because I made Nightmares of Elm Street, I had nightmares, external validation of what I was feeling inwardly, take it out of my head and in front of me instead of internal stuff, it was that reaction to adult fears which met childhood fears that met and had coffee
-horror offers a unique experience, hard to find elsewhere, experience from what I got from seeing it as a child and didn’t understand it but knew I was terrified, its really rare for horror to touch into I dont know whats going on but im really scared, go back to that childhood afraid state, if I could ever get a song, source, concept match and id love to recreate that
-i saw a documentary having a horror director talking about another horror director, tough screen at first, he was afraid of that director and cant get that out of control feeling out of self
-i love vampires and this is the kind of genre where you get that
-i love that horror deals with metaphor, monsters as metaphor, great shorthand as vidders, how can we create horror vids, what techniques?
-building tension, build, build, build, tension, punch in the face
-last vid: how much holy crap can I fit into 60 seconds
-difficult to maintain tv horror because it becomes familiar, lose the other, horror as safe fear but if it goes too far we want to make it safer
-ex. Vid Greensilver's shining vid
-uses the beat strongly, lots of crazy crap going on under the beat, watch it at night and you wont sleep but it’ll be worth it
-captures the tension thats slowly built over the course of the movie, scarier if you’ve seen the film, you know what the scenes are, youre just waiting for, oh god no its going to kick off, happy for the faster pacing at end
-she doesnt alter the stillness of it, didn’t add motion, I want to add motion to still movie, it kept what the director used to make it scary
-the stillness is your own placidity, I will scare you on my own good time
-focus on what we are not seeing, long empty hallway, why is it empty
-roving pov camera, what are we going to find around the next corner, how did she do that
-it establishes a very potent voice, its about the various faces of Jack, it’ll take awhile to see how Jack centric it really is, the house is a representation the psychological turmoil of Jack, all the themes are there in the movie and brings them centrally, for me it wraps them around, starts with the really important stuff, it condenses the experience, the movie has a different sort of flow
-visually we're looking at Jack, the clip right before boy goes into the room, see profile of Jack, Jack looks at Danny and you see two Jacks, unconsciously youre aware theres a schism thats going to happen, see it throughout whole film, see eyes rolling in the back of his head, greensilver set us up that theres a schism coming
-girl power: more emphasis on using women as protagonists versus the male idea of women as weaker, more interesting to make women the agent starting to take control, one of the most problematic horror series (sleepover) was written and directed by women
-ex. Nightmare on Elm Street vid
-combines other movies as well, similar archetypes in other movies, symbolism of the shows bypassed me because I missed the primer of what it was, is this a standard vid problem or specific
-concerned about the framing of the 7th movie which was very meta, the actress was getting script for horror movie and then it happened in the real world
-the place in the walls of where you live...
-drag me to hell..she wasnt exploited in the ways that those kind of horror movies, lets have a monster and put the girl through the ringer but no clothes ripped off, menaced sexually, etc
-difficult to get mad at it, horrible rape scene but then there was the bag getting caught in the pubic hair and it gives you great opportunity to do crazy shit
-i dont love slasher movies but I love certain hammer movies, not just because their campy but the actual horror aspects do work
-ex. Night of the Hunter
-why Clare de Lyme? I loved this version, the idea for me, it asked for me to do something in black and white, the music feels unsettling to me, wanted to do this fandom for 5 years, I found wonderful things in Night of the Hunter, I was unsettled and want to share it
-that vid has some of the most effective long clips, it builds the tension, final shot of the owl and the rabbit..
-Lum fixed the ending of the movie, movie has the same tone as the vid
-why I havent vidded horror is finding appropriate music, music that is lyrically suited for horror shows up in genres I dont care for, greatest potential for music is likely to be instrumental or acapella to disassociate the lyrics, most music is not about the themes I want to vid
-papercut/event horizon: going to be instrumental linkin park rock track to emphasize tension and action because I wanted fast moving that might be in the movie itself, I was listening to it and I wanted to give it slightly different texture, remained in the same genre but found the mashup and gave me a way to play with pov to show the pov of the ship itself as well as the people
-music choices in horror vid: you are constrained by lyric that instrumentals dont, I want to orchestrate a vid in my own way and instrumentals give that freedom where horror has that top level with that fairy tale layer and then go down deep to personify good and evil but I dont have to say that in a lyrical way, I take great liberties with lyrics, that is very empowering to work with that music, horror is especially suited
-finding something scary and ...depends on whether I expect to be scared, hearing the music can make me be scared
-use the fact that people expect to be scared and use it, use a different beat, take peoples expectation and mess that
-if a music is slower than a heartbeat, it was scary when it did that, knew it was going to scare me
-i like to use instrumental, theyre concentrate more on the lyrics, in the instrumental its more about the feeling, I try to scare myself more than anything because if it scares me, it’ll scare others
-cespiria ?? song is automatically scary, inferno soundtrack
-the words underneath echan's vid, cant die enough doesnt speak to the movie being told but it gives me the right mood, words aren't necessary important
-pulled out of cespiria vid, took out of vid because of that, havent seen tori amos song thats successful, has abstracted lyrics but likes to talk about sex a lot, raspberry swirl took out of vid, is it the blood, whats the clitoris metaphor supposed to be in this
-i first started only vidding instrumentals, afraid of finding clip that matched lyrics first, I first cut clips without the music and then match to it, its all about the lyrics are saying about the footage, horror its not about the lyrics as much, its the mood
-in the past 10 years I just got into japanese/chinese films, so much more horrifying, nothings ever settled, its always irrational, theres no closure, in western theres more closure, we're more focused on rational versus japanese have ghosts in their culture that live there
-because horror is down to our fundamentals, they have different ones in japanese/chinese so its even more other for us, there catharsis is not the same as ours
-people review subtitles for american adaptions, horrified in different sense because black humor was lost and they didn’t understand it, half the time youre supposed to get out of kabuki
-please make me horror vids, will post 30-40 horror films I recommend, good vidding material
Setting the Pace
-what does pacing mean?
-setting and varying the speed of the clips, length of clips
-workout, high intensity, only so long you can sprint, can keep a slow pace up for a long time
-what rate you can maintain for what time
-if youre building a narrative its setting up your beginning, middle and end
-not necessarily the speed, it can be reveal of content, are you going to blow your wad too soon
-how you get to clips, long dissolve or cut between two things, transitions
-creating tension, releasing tension, knowing when to build and when to release, all about orgasms, how to do it, when to do it, whom to do it to...
-that vid had great pacing AND that vid had great pacing and have it be totally different
-What is “Good” Pacing?
-what serves the vid, if youre telling intimate story you want to let people access the story youre telling, not going to get it as much as rapid cutting
-the audience doesnt feel like when is this ever going to end, im sorry did I miss something here
-maintaining audience attention, did it tell the story that it needed
-variation of pace, very few vids can keep up the pace and be great (counterpoint-song choice)
-song can dictate slow build to something big, do we need to keep that energy
-did the pacing match the song?
-if you use the song where the pacing would not hold audience attention would you still change speed of clips to help the pace
-for slow songs that means you need really slow clips the whole way through but you dont need to have all the same
-if you can find a song that has a build, thats gold
-ex. Street Cafe
-has the same pace, varied length of clip so its not metronomic vid, intensity of vid just keeps going, it doesnt let up
-it has some slow moments, him sitting on the train, its necessarily with the high speed you’ve got, its worked in, he'd be walking for a couple beats, just enough to keep you from hyperventilating
-did you check out at those moments, no it didn’t usually, in that sense, its keeping its momentum
-if it was just bang bang bang, by putting in a couple longing clips with internal motion it helped you breathe
ex. Jarrow's first draft, telephone
-the new technical thing slowed it down, not just still frame with little things are happening, if youre moving and the song is still moving, your vid needs to keep moving
-slow build vids, we love those vids, it starts slow, less instrumentation, more instruments, faster, louder, you have to react to that, this summer becca posted her harry potter vid
-ex. fan_eunice's Harry Potter vid
-what I like about it is when the music kicked in, she was more variable with the clipping scenes but there were some longer clips but it worked because there was more emotion worked in there
-approved highly of the explosions, perfect for the booms of the music
-its not just the speed, not just the cutting speed, its what youre actually showing, you need to show things with more power
-if theres too much happening in that clip, you cant cut as fast, you want lots of short clips with little motion happening
-gain some pacing power by landing more on the beat with certain things
-ex. Orchard of Mines
-three sections: really slow, drums kick in so it gets more active and then holy crap, sometimes song will dictate it, increased motion, cutting faster, go with your song, do what your song is telling you to do, stay true to the song
-i love that its not just an increased level of motion, its all one piece, it goes one way, its very organic, keep continuous line, you dont feel the cuts at all
-the way it uses repeated imagery esp the eye, it keeps the seamless, goes from one arc to the next, feel the continuity even as it gets faster
-sometimes you need to withhold something, needed to find way to keep climax at end and not in the middle
-ex. About Schroeder
-do not do, my bad example, slow pace, even clips, a part of song was more punctuated but its just in that one little part, a lot of people didn’t like that part, its jarring to me
-just because it makes sense to me with the punctuated lyrics, I can defend that decision kind of but I dont necessarily feel good about it, pacing is important if you set something up you need to maintain that
-i dont think it was wrong, it could have been more effective, its not always that youre wrong, its about whats the most effective way to slam someone, take your audience and grab someone
-we’ve been talking about the smooth lines, it feels like a stumble, like a marathon, slow and then fast
-if you had softened it with dissolves, it might have been softer
-it was only the mistake of everything else is the same and thats why it stuck out, it was the only moment, everything had 4 frame crossframes so that moment was too different, I didn’t mean for it to be different
-Please Don't/Less Effective
-be very intentional about what youre doing, unintentional stumble, be careful with flow of your clips, what makes you look and think what pacing should be better?
-all clips the same length
-the viewer gets too used to it and tunes it out
-ignoring internal motion and not using the rhythm of that, want to move in the same direction, its intentionally moving forwarding
-always cutting it on the same beat in the phrase
-cutting style matches the genre of the song, cut more on the beat for a pop song vs. a waltz
-if song has faster pace and you have very long clips, thats not usually a good choice
-if you listen to the lyrics and you always clip on beat 1 then its going to be very similar beat lengths, sometimes there is a meaningful place to cut on a beat its on beat 2, 6, 4, etc, it all depends on the kind of music, theres logical places like big beat, chorus, crash, etc
-beat 1 is your friend but you have many friends
-you can cut in different places to surprise the audience
-dont cut right on the beat, three before wavelength start the extending of a punch and have the fist hit on the drum
-keep your vid moving with your song
-throws me out of vid if movement is not timed with song
-Must be Dreaming by cornchild: Simon smashes the blue thing down and it cuts on the boom and noo it should be the explosion there
-ex. Sometime Around Midnight by bop_radar
-key thing in terms of pacing, when it went into drum section, it was cut, cut, cut, when the verse came back in, it gave you more time to see whats happening, every time the section changed, it changed for her to go with it
-transition clips were interesting in terms of cutting on beat and not, kiss on beat and it'd last a little longer and then others were not on the beat at all
-some transitions were more clear were not, getting out of fast section is harder, oh no have to slow down before wall, use clips where something interesting is happening on beat, 1st cut and then interesting thing happens on 2nd beat
-example of great pacing vid: ragged ass road, longer clips in the beginning so it has a great payoff
-theoretically ive been enjoying folk songs with not ideal pacing songs but ive been struggling with pace, advice focusing on whats happening within clips, more advice on how to keep it interesting
-long fades into other clips to give it more interesting even when its slow, transitions, overlays
-vary long shots, medium shots, extreme closeups, use of objects
-emotional content of the clips, vary it, dont always have to be crying (yes they do)
-do three sections, different thematic breaks distract from slow pace
-changes in clips: lightness, black, use leveling
-have narrative sections, drop dead gorgeous never slows but it has sections with chloe, lana, lex, etc
-dont just match the beat, match guitar strum, other instruments
Forever Reblog
-Where are vids posted?
-LJ, DW, YT, Twitter, Facebook, AO3, Blip, Vimeo, Tumblr, Personal webpage, blogs, private links, source related archives, email lists, forums
-Where do you prefer to post your vids and NOT post your vids?
-Yotube: huge audience, I dont mind people reposting
-most useful if your song is incredibly popular, will try to replace
-using obscure music sources is great, reach people you dont usually interact
-hit a bigger audience
-80% of views are from YT people who look from keywords, no other way to reach this audience, wouldn’t have gotten 10,000 hits on vids
-i get good comments from Youtube, not wanky ones
-what did you get strikes for, cam copy of x-men first class, fox is a total dick, (was it cut up?), took down 2 vids at one gave as one strike
-i dont like to put a lot of stock into reactions on Youtube, 300 comments about inane argument, huge wank fest about this
-i do some searching to see if someone has that music and source, that means im going to use it if not
-leave it there as private if copyright issues
-not a vid im interested in posting, theres risk, people looking for my stuff wouldn’t really find it, im from older school of vidding
-risk is they take down your channel
-not a vidder, my issue is the continuity of identity, always follow a vidder, you bookmark a vid and then its gone, people on tumblr dont keep their name, change their time everytime a movie comes out, do you make arrangements with identity switch
-its great to find stuff, its hard to download stuff that's really good
-some channels with backup channels, before I watch it, I start d/ling the mp4 (may delete it), it might not be there tomorrow
-thats why AO3 works, its a base, it can work together, still have that network on AO3
-AO3 is an up and comer, still only have a few vids up there, I have hit counts there, people follow, kudos are nice, you have identity there and you can link to journals, they get 1 mil hits a month
-I like the kudos button a lot but its better than the dislike button because I want to know why
-i like the dislike button because people will say those people are crazy
-Do you post everywhere?
-I post to LJ, YT, sendspace and possibly AO3
-there are things like the megaupload which hit vidding, lost lots of links to vids
-I like to post to AO3 because I can put multiple vid embeds, I like Vimeos password protection versus horrible Germany rights problem
-where you post is depending on where youre audience is
-i love the password protection links, I love the great passwords because it becomes part of the vidwatching experience
-i hate the passwords, it just takes too long
-what do people think of dropbox? I’ve been backing up vids in dropbox, dropbox has offered streaming video, great for beta
-dropbox has ownership issues worth looking into
-in podfic fandom, it relies on directly downloading a file, megauploading has made people freaked out about free services so it goes back to personal web page, the only safe space is the one we can control
-we're (ao3) currently working on support for adding media types, we would love to do hosting, a lot of issues before that
-labeling for AO3: one user for fic, vids, podfic, etc
-if you have different semi-identities, organized under one name, when you post a new vid, this new work is a vid versus this new podfic, letting you slap a label and when you search, you can filter
-Youtube: approach Youtube, get a remix category, if a vid isn’t fair use, you dont need a license agreement, try to partner, we need a category, this use isn’t fair use, license isn’t important, we want a person to do it, we want to put the onus on them to fix it, its dependent on fair use for people in Germany
-my experience is that people are moving away from LJ/DW, young people are on tumblr a lot, but I have both and I use them for different things, LJ/DW is for words, animated gif for tumblr, people who archive fic on LJ but post snippets, prompts, etc on Tumblr, some people are on Tumblr, some not and some combining in various ways
-active on Twitter, lots of discussion on twitter with dialogue, others join in, a day or two later and then you see meta on LJ/DW, reaches a different audience, can elaborate, discuss, prompted discussions on twitter which is so ephemeral, tumblr gets buried in two minutes
-on twitter I look at sherlock twitters, they post to facebook
-someone is referring to my vids from facebook to youtube, someone in a vidding group linked from facebook
-i think links to vids on facebook, theyre really strict and they took a vid down from FB because of the music really quick
-i only put link to FB if im cool with my mom seeing it
-before its private for identity and now its all, real name + kirk/spock shipper, depends on when you get on the net, my aunt in 60s now uses real name everywhere and I dont like it but kids are cool with it
-its a professional thing, in some jobs you can get in trouble for it
-it depends on how comfortable you are combining your personal life with your fannish life
-its also what people are really aware of it, ive decided not to be a politician or teacher and put my real name everywhere
-on tumblr theres aggregators, fuck yeahs, its hard to find stuff on tumblr, people have recced things on tumblr because people reblog it, embedding on vimeo, reblogs go up
-key to tumblr, have to let go of catching up, if you missed it, you trust it will come back to you
-im interested when whats going to happen when vidding community hits immovable wall, its like a tadpole with a leg, its filmmaking, the animated gifts, they not vidders, theres a form thats developing thats doing something thats hasn’t been done, somethings going to happen where they meet, this group has something to learn from tumblr, whats happening is very primitive, different kind of filmmaking, this community takes the best of visuals arts, theres something there, when people are technically minded with a certain skillset do what the tumblr people do, something amazing is going happen
-in sherlock tumblr vid, theyre cutting to 1 minute to 1.5 minute vids for tumblr
-been posting my vids to tumblr, tag your vid as fanvid is best, vid is 60% porn, also try vidding tag, not a lot of vidding discussion, there is some, the YT community uses Tumblr has a base for vidding discussion, tags are important
-tumblr does gifs really well, recontextualize gifs like with fic, little ficlets underneath with the gif, it’ll add to story, round robin story being told, this person has come up with six gifs, mix with text and visuals which is something we dont hit very hard
-because of the collective and collaborative nature of vids that other people post other peoples vids, I feel how it should be when people post my vids
-if you dont have a lot of followers, you wont get out there while a fuckyeah has more reach
-someone start a fuckyeahvidding blog and just repost vids, not other stuff, be an aggregator so you can be more focused so they give you all the art filtered one level deep
-there is also fuckyeahfanvids...
-much like YT, people dont always know that you made it like with Tumblr
-vividconofficial is the official vvc tumblr which will reblog vvc vids
-is there a vid finders, do you have a copy?, its kind of dead, can post at vidding
-fic writers put their own stuff on tumblr, then reblog in morning
-try to find vidder and comment to the wrong person, its hard
-do post your own vids, if someone reblogs you, you see the notes on the original post
-ive only done this once, it got 10 notes, someone else put it on tumblr and I got 200 views, it depends if it works
-put vvc community, put links to Tumblr in our community
-reblogging is deeper, theyre write hashtag fic or put gifs to it, you put more remixes to it, they feel like they can do whatever they want (which I like-kiki)
