Vividcon Panel Notes 2013
Here are my panel notes (part 1) for Vividcon 2013. I missed the Audio Editing and Perspective panels so hopefully others took notes on them. I did my best at hearing and typing as accurately as I could but sometimes people had quiet voices or I couldn't type fast enough so these are not perfect transcriptions especially as they are not completely proofread. If you see something and want it corrected (or credit), feel free to let me know as I'd love for it to be more accurate.
IDIC Vidding
-explore all the aesthetics in vidding, different value systems, revel in that diversity
-the way vidding fits in historically with remix culture, other forms of digital authorship
-not vidding and these other forms, not necessarily a dichotomy between YT/Tumblr, machinima, etc
-multi-source remix: Khameleon808 - fanwork for The Glitch Mob
-emphasis is on spectacle of editing, a lot of films in a small nugget, there's a conversation between all of these sources, different from multifandom vids, you're going to know every single source, emphasis on rhythmic editing, match on action where one action goes to next action, tracing motion across 739 sources, parallel movement and composition, creates a sense of partying together, in this together, on the same journey, unites texts through our pleasure in them
-DJ Earworm brings together all the music from one year: not about creating a narrative or story, world goes boom unifying, pleasure of bringing these things together
-how could this work for vidding? subtle quiet of shared themes across sources "They can never understand" by XTheJulieSpi: contemplative version, draw on high energy celebration of the collective
-Motionography 2012 by lubriderm23, "Short Circuit" by theanonsisters
Machinima
-machinima is working with video games as source: Skyrim: gangnam style dance by abexornotron1
-gaming vids are everywhere, YT, gaming sites, Russian sites, language has evolved with knowing a lot about the source, PC gaming is the most successful way so has a lot of technical people, a lot of them know how to program and do mods, can manipulate characters to have a conversation with the source, can be performance by characters or vidders, its a show
-I'm Different - the defective turret - A Portal 2 & Gmod Machinima Song
-more people using it as source becomes easier and characters/story become more in depth
-Mass Effect is where you can create your own characters - ex. beccatoria: "With Blood", she downloaded walkthroughs but shes now capturing her own footage
-how to capture source: the word hell comes to mind, create your own character, create your own friendships, relationships that affects game, very time consuming, very draining on computer system, whenever it gets to cut scene, hit a button to capture and hit a button to stop and if hit wrong button and if forget to press button you have to go back and play after save again, 40-50 hours for game (if you know what you're doing), you can have same sex/het, threesome, very complicated, already regretting it
-rhoboat's "Scream and Shout" excerpt, need to follow camera direction, need interesting camera angles so that changes the controls and fell off building
-Dreams by PowerMonkey: disney characters (influenced by Must Be Dreaming AMV -Anoel)
-kiki_miserychic's video: will be available online
Chill the Fuck Out
-we're going to be talking about stress and what to do when the hobby you do to release stress attempts to kill you, this is a place of truth and sharing,i have talking sticks, this is going to be okay, serious topics so if you need professional help, please get it, lets talk about chilling the fuck out
-lets talk about stress baby...stress can fuck your shit up, blood pressure changes, GI problems, thats a special world, mood swings, stress can be a powerful motivator, the adrenaline can be protective, the problem is when you start to live with that, to your health, your standard of living
-prolonged stress can lead to a lot of really cruddy things, like DEATH or worse, sexual dysfunction
-strategies of coping with stress can be widely varied but all usually attempt to lessen or decrease the impact of the stresser even if only temporarily, my favorite is AVOIDANCE
-call someone up on the phone, but holy shit you don’t want to, you put it off, nooo cant do it, ill do it later, it alleviates the stress i feel but you just put it off and prolong it, deal with this after I eat lunch
-other ways: shut down, i ain’t doing shut, i'm not getting off the couch
-i become so sleepy, i lie down and sleep wherever i am, but then when i wake up its worse
-i got on tumblr for a minute, for kittens, kittens riding on shark, 2, 3 hours later, 24 hours later, online is super easy to distract yourself, procrastinate, veg out, im going to pack my schedule with other stuff
-dealing with stress is temporary, eventually you have to deal with something, eventually itll become chronic, leads to emotional problems like burnout, procrastination is not a actually a successful long term strategy (or I would be a CEO of America)
-What when you can't remove or deal with the source of stress? job is stressful, family is stressful, the world is stressful, all the bees are dying, pacific rim didn’t make enough money at the box office, it can lead to learned helplessness
-have you ever felt so bad you feel numb? that's bad, thats a clinical thing
-you could change things but it would require life changes and you have to change your identity, probably should stick with it
-Self Care: what is it and what is it not?
-Tumblr, TV, things you procrastinate with is self soothing is okay, nothing wrong with having a bad day and seeing cat gifs, go on ?, that shit gets really competitive and sometimes you cry and its too much
-exercise, why don’t i always do that, then something happens and you don’t and you hate exercise, do it
-eat a healthy diet that is not cheetos even though cheetos are not healthy vidding food, eat raw almonds but moderation, i eat a whole bad of almonds, don’t do that, not that i know
-Self-care is not pampering, its nice to have me time, getting a massage, makes you feel good and thats great but its not exactly what we're talking about here, more stuff you can put in your daily life thats a solace
-creative activities like vidding can really be effective outlets and can reduce stress, also cuddling a pig can also help
-when you’re creating art, the frustration and stresses of daily life can fall away, can help you cope with shit of life, can help achieve balance, if you’re going through hell and you’re connecting through a character thats also going hell and you’re sitting there cry at the timeline, thats beautiful man...or lady, vidding can be our greatest strength and biggest weakness
-vidding your solace, your beautiful wonderful hobby, sometimes wants you dead, it really hates you, vidding does not like you , vidding does not love you back, it can be a one way street, eventually you’ll learn to love yourself or some bullshit
-YOU ARE DOING THIS TO RELAX WHY THIE FUCK IS THIS HAPPENING???WHHHYYYY WHY IS THIS MY LIFE? DO NOT WANT DO NOT WANT DO NOT WANT!!!!! (Derek gif)
-there are reasons of course for this, vid in your head, single perfect idea, its yours and its going to be amazing
-reality sets in and you find out that vidding is a really stupid hobby
-let me demonstrate the ways: the vid in your head doesn’t match the vid on the timeline (fuck you guys who have a vid that matches), i cant get it to look right, cant find the scene that exists, where are the unicorns in smallville, i know its there, but it did happen, its canon
-the vid on the timeline sort of matches the vid in your head but it turns out you have terrible taste and the vid confirms that
-the vids you create don’t hate you, you’re their mom, why cant you be more like your brother
-the vid in your head never actually got a chance to make it from the timeline into an exportable format because you are pretty certain that whatever platform you use for vidding has become self aware and is now plotting your eventual doom
-skynet is on your computer...story: sisabet's vid is still in premiere and cant export it off computer, we've all had tech problems, you’ll spend 3 hours editing and 6 hours exporting, its so stressful and you’re crying and having anxieties
-stress especially in its insidious long term form that you really have no control over can block the creative process or at least make very very difficult to birth
-your coping skills are like, yeah im going to be over here, maybe not troys experience but sometimes i've felt like that, you have to do something else, im not telling you not to vid (im later telling you that because vidding fucking hates you) but do something else
-this is you, the vid you birthed and you loved and you put it online and crickets, nobody loves it
-sometimes you fight through the artistic pain, you struggle with the tech you emerge victorious with this perfect gleaming example example of your soul and you share it online and...
-fandom you vid in is pretty small, i made a festivid that was only seen by one person, only she liked it, it was a kdrama, it was cool, you might feel bad there’s not a huge response or any response...
-unconnected to audience, you’re not where other people are, moving away from LJ, moving to tumblr and streaming, it can be difficult to navigate that, especially if you’re comfortable where you are, audience moves and all of a sudden no ones commenting on your vid, especially if you had those conversations before, maybe there’s something wrong with me, thats not it, its not happening where you’re at, its extremely stressful
-the aesthetics change all the time, you’re in a new fandom and they’re really into these saturated visuals with text all over, you get comments like needs more effects, you can make footage more fresh, you’re not connection with new audience, doesn’t look like what other people are expecting, artistic differences, if you can expect it and don’t immediately go to the i suck phase so don’t blame yourself for that
-THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE RELAXING WHY CAN I NOT RELAX AM I NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE NICE THINGS WHAT FRESH HELL IS THIS...
-okay so stop. Just. Deep Inhale. Okay, you are doing fine. Just fine. Seriously, you are awesome and and great and sometimes these things just happen.
-sometimes you need to go on input mode when you want to be on output mode (thanks Lum). this is fine. This is okay. you can watch all of orphan black in one night and we have your back...maybe try some other way to relax?
-if you open up your vidding program with intent: you’re a fucking vidder
-YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS. I REPEAT IF VIDDING AND/OR FANDOM IS STRESSING YOU OUT AND MAKING YOUR LIFE HARD YOU CAN TAKE A BREATHER. IT IS NOT COMPULSORY
-there are a lot of other ways to spend your time and energy, maybe make gifs? (of your vids)
-for example: you could follow people with dogs around on their walks and burst into tears whenever the dog notices you and earnestly tell the dogs person I LOVE HIM SO MUCH when they turn to see what is happening...not that this is a true story or anything
-if your dog looks lovingly at me then maybe you should expect it
-there are probably worse reasons to have a baby, i hear they can be time consuming, maybe don’t have a baby because you’re bored, don’t have a baby on spite unless you’re in my family
-you could become a total badass seeking out the most badass experience on the planet, some of us need to do something, seek out something thats incredible...picture is it real? yes...no..FUCK YOU is it real?
-Two words: paper dolls, maybe you have all these fannish feelings but you feel it right here and dogs aren’t doing it for you, i just said that, no...you’re a writer and you’re a double threat and fuck you, so maybe you have bad grammar and spelling
-thebacklot.com, you get your derek paper doll and adele paper doll, she gives life advice via song to derek, stop being such an asshole, pay attention to your sister...twist: adele's a clone, they sing duets, they sing any song they want to derek, derek says yes, they sing angel of morning, are you going to film this and do it in a vid? -thebacklot.com your enabling, we could do that, you could make up the scene you don’t have, NOW KISS, i want to run my face on his face, you can take it as far as you need to take it, my little sister had barbie dolls, there might have been an arthur and merlin and that was a lot of fun
-you can be silly and you can put it on youtube and you wont be the creepiest person out there, get it out, enjoy yourself, do something stupid, maybe with a nice person online
-Seriously. You will be fine, your vids will be fine, you will vid again
-your audience might be changing and it might take some time to find that sweet spot but these things tend to work out eventually
-new ways of doing things suck at first, because everyone hates change but eventually you’ll get attached and when that thing changes you’ll be just fucked up then as you are now
-they’re like your mom, they’ll find your address, if you do have a baby, that shits genetic and they’re be vidding and tell you they invented it
-one doll should sing someone like you to the other one...you just blew my fucking mind, what does that mean to the timeline, thats like a doctor who episode
-i think this is bambi vs godzilla and there was a foot...given my size wouldn’t i be godzilla, you’re not as tall as godzilla
-if adele was a yager pilot, you have to clone her...buffy? beyonce? kesha would be the original odd couple, wheres the kesha paper doll? you got glitter right, i've been wondering how to set fire to the rain, i think it involves phosphorous, if you just mix in gasoline with the rain
Song Choice
-i wanted to do this panel because i felt like song choice is assumed by vids, its an incredibly personal thing or its just obvious, when we start vidding for the first time, the song speaks to us so all our vids in the future will be just like that which is not always like that
-goal of this pane: to make us all better vidders by choosing and finding better songs, for our idea, for our style of vidding, avoiding songs that are bad for our vid, learning from the successes and mistake of others
-Why is song choice so important
-AbsoluteDestiny's pyramid of vid awesomeness
-Song Choice Edited footage
Intent ---------- Audience
Idea
-song choice, edited footage and idea need to be strong to create a strong intent
-if any one of these parts is weak, this structure can fall apart, if song choice doesn’t connect strongly enough with idea, vid can not communicate what you want, the idea thats lofty, if you have high concept idea you may need a better song choice and edited footage or no one will get it
-computer goes out...vidding hates you...normally we'd call absolutedestiny...do we need adele?
-ive got the song, not the fandom, don’t have the song but have idea and/or fandom, judging whether instincts are founded
-have song, will travel, trying to see if instincts on whether fandom/song will work, when you have initial song, what are the different categories that you access it with?
-what i do: is this stylistically the kind of things I enjoy making vids for? some vids are much more pleasurable and sometimes thats a kind of song, ive had a lot of fun with humorous, that often makes me excited,
-another is more thematic suitability, genre song or mood that connects
-Lyrical suitability, the lyrics are totally about this, the subject of your video, this literally is about this, if the lyrics are really good and you only heard them after looking them up, only the ones you knew before you looked up are the ones the audience will hear so bear that in mind
-i look for the temp of something I like to cut at, looked for funny with a lyrical content, even with slow prompt songs were not slow enough when every shot is a closeup of eyes or trees, wont be as fast as a show thats cuts like a music video
-is it musically interesting, is there variety in the instruments
-lyrically: i find it helpful to look at lyrics, i find it useful for my own personal
-emotions are one of the most overlooked parts of the vid, find a dark song but the song doesn’t have the emotions for what you feel about the subject, if its a cool song, its well edited, its thematically appropriate but there’s no emotion to it, they're missing that certain element
-i look for songs with a strong metaphor, doesn’t need to be exact
-metaphor between song choice and idea, examples: dual pov slash vid, one lyrics for one character and then switch to other pov for other verse then together in the end, song choice informs structure, you can have old vs. new, ideological differences
-songs that have infinite meanings also have none, there’s so many ways you could interpret it, the audience wont know which one is going to be so unless idea is really obvious, be careful
-can also go for simple songs, easily transposed to another fandom, survey for their experiences, overused songs, overused idea for song, simple songs are overused because they can be applied to many things
-songs that no one has heard of yet that i think people should know more about it, try to make it as equally important, if its a popular fandom then i pick an equally unknown song
-things i would rule out: songs i would associate with something else
-can be really useful and can be bad
-i find a lot of new music through vids, its fun when i find a new song for a band
-i often have a specific idea, i have to look at structure of lyrics and then the sound is crappy, for high concept vids i need to use instrumentals or foreign lyrics because its too distracting when they can only hear some of the lyrics
-songs that can build are helpful, never underestimate an awesome bridge, beware of a song that ends weakly, what are you going to do then? fade out forever
-songs may be too big for a fandom, may need to cut the song down, might not be enough footage for a song, might be because idea needs to be changed
-if the emotion felt by the song doesn’t fit your emotions towards source/idea, this can be bad because you can end with a vid you don’t like that much
-can use mismatches to create irony and purpose, audience needs to realize that
-if there’s a mismatch, try looking for a cover
-live performances can change a lot
-if you can find instrumental version of popular song, that can work
-working with someone who is recording an instrumental cover
-ideological mismatch can be important, beautiful struggle: HP vid
-may not be able to establish a strong connection with song choice and edited footage, you wanted to do internal motion and then source is really static and cant make that connection, test songs on the timeline, its an exploration, you may discover on the timeline that parts of your song work and some don’t and maybe itll lead you to the song you should be making
-when i am vidding, i will take footage that ill place at points and if the result works for me, ill do 3/4 in different parts and if its works then i think the song will be viable but if only the crescendo works, ill do the 30 seconds for myself but if intro/outtro doesn’t work then i put that aside, just as a test, throw that footage down on the timeline
-i have many projects with songs and video, oh fuck what am i doing, its not going to work
-footage prep takes a very long time, find out if it works before all the work
-music over gifsets, just go yeeeah
-where did you hear songs? in survey, the first time i heard the song; more people, of AbsoluteDestiny's vids (over 60) i knew 39 for a year or more, if im not listening to music then i may not be making vids next year, for festivids i have lists of songs that may work in the future
-ive got a lot of songs i want to vid but i don’t know what yet, i listen to new music, first time i hear it, if im driving and im focused on the song, i want to see what that looks like, i don’t know what that is, i have 75 songs i want to vid yet
-super valuable resource, very small amount of people were given songs, ask other vidders for help, (sisabet: I HAVE SONGS)
-a little over half are because i ask my friends for what they have
-even if its not the right song, it can cue in for what the right song is
-i often find fanmixes, a lot of those are great vidding materials, it goes along with this show and they’re handing it right to you
-i cared a lot about finding the perfect song and festivid introduced me to the good enough song but when you have a time limit and you want to make some treats then narrow down your options, you might not find the perfect song, not necessarily bad
-experience this festivid, you gave me two songs, didn’t use them for festivids but used one for a different vid and one by same artist
-i knew the type of song but not the right lyrics and then used pandora to find a similar song
-use pandora, metafilter to ask for songs
-people will make gifsets with song lyrics with dramatic background, i kind of want to make one off of that
-cdbaby or noisetrade, sound alike, will pop up more obscure, can find indie or local regional, serendipity, many happiest are i got the album and a song immediately pinged, often things on shuffle, ive heard it before but i hear in new context, hear it in a different way
-google similar lyrics (its all a dream), you find a lot of shitty songs but also find different genres of music
-having a good musical diet, good friends sharing vidsongs, can sit on a song for ages but it might not be your vidsong but good for someone you know
-finding vidsongs for things you’ve never seen, then try to sell the song to them, getting pretty good at that
-im a foister, ill hear a song and ill be like, thats a fan_eunice song, don’t be selfish with your music, we all have our comfort zones, pop music can be perfectly great, there’s a reason its popular
-now that there’s so many themes festivids, cvv, i have a list of songs that i like dancing to music, pop music is good for that, workout music can help
-going to the gym can help out with finding CVV vids
-drop their genre snobbery, i like this vid in spite of hip hop and then sisabet forced me to like it
-finding a vidsong thats suitable for my style of vidding, if you expand your musical genres, you can expand your style of vidding, i really wanted to try something really technical, i found a song outside my normal, that can be great because when you’re new you dive into things, you don’t really know how to vid, but you didn’t know if you could do it, when you’re experienced you feel like you can do certain types of vidding, so take more risks even if you’ve been doing it forever, a broad musical knowledge will really help
-i finally made an emotional regina spektor song that was outside my comfort zone
-it really expanded your skillset, you knew source well, its a challenging source, godfather, the song was complicated in interesting ways, you need to do a lot of structuring, potential for something great but there’s a lot of bricks you need to make this vid yet
-my computer says no, because vidding hates you but you are ready so chill the fuck out sisabet
-we need a work in progress thread for vidding, you don’t want to delete it, should be a place to post it out
-some vids need to let go and some you need to go back to because its just scary, maybe its the wrong song or idea or edited footage, could be gravestone vid
-every vid i started this year, every vid was stepping up, my festivid was terrifying
-The reality of: I thought everything was going so well, the first one: have fandom, in a serial song choice way, keep thinking i have the song and its not working, example vid: failed experiments in vidding
-that vid is real life: hashtag accurage
-this is not just a parody that was made as a parody, this actually happened
-think about the different vids, ive got a cool song, its thematically similar, literally nothing happens, have to keep going back to pyramid, lack of a concept she said, but song choice to idea and edited footage was both hard to do with song, puts me in thinky-feely place but there’s nothing there in that, it doesn’t mean it couldn’t work but its have to work well with strong idea and footage, whether or not its worth it, if you don’t know what to do
-if you have cool intro, find thematic suitable, you think song choice and edited footage are cool technically, im going to do jump cuts, ive got an idea, this perfect vidder who is not me can make something that looks awesome with but the idea of why this is being done, did have good song choice and edited footage which allowed intro
-then have acapella-violence vid, if you haven’t made that vid yet, i promise you you will, there’s little i can do to protect you, your beta, your conscience may be able to help you, im going to do this to whatever and they're like...ohh. sometimes its because they don’t know idea, song, they could be like, that could turn out really bad
-we need it, its an emotional journey you have to take out for yourself
-she did make a cowboy bebop vid and it was this vid about vidding, i thought it was a universe vid but its really about spike, hes always the focus, i need to think about what i want to do with his character, there is always a song out there, by measuring the songs you’re picking early on, picture in your head the vid, you can avoid wearing yourself out with false starts
-started one vid but made different vid
-made a vid to starship troopers to a song by ?, i wanted it to be schmoopy and it turned out ironically schmoopy
-you know what footage is there once you put stuff down on timeline
-i had an experience making auction vid for gwyn for navigator, it had all this cool stuff in it, it builds, its dramatic, it worked with medieval, i ignored the inappropriate lyrics, it was about a loner experience when the movies about a group experience, by putting the clips to this song, i got a feeling for what another song could be, exploration process needs to happen
-this vid is going to be about this and maybe this footage also, became a multifandom vid, reduced footage from two fandoms
-ive got to be careful about the songs i pick, im going to blow my fannish load for source, do i want it to be this vid, is this the hill im going to die on
-when i started i was just finished being a student, part time job, i had lots of free time but now with full time job, family, your time is precious, you cant waste your time on vids don’t do it for you
-i have final cut files that are inappropriate named, then realized source is completely wrong or the song is wrong, used to be U2 vid and now its not
-file called Channing Tatum face and hes not in the vid
-kuwdora made a lot of Sanctuary vids, she made one for Blow/Tesla, she made We R Who We R, not all Kesha songs are made equal, things weren’t quite right, she wanted it to be a sort of an ensemble vid, pimping, song was too flat, show them being awesome in an ensemble which is why she changed to blow, more about situation rather than people
-Love Turns 40, first half before instrumental was made 3 times, have right song, ive made it and its not right, need to have a do over, he was not surprised
-i knew the vid was in there you’re looking at a block of wood, and you know its in there, committed to an idea, had to keep trying until i got it right, became a vendetta
-what was wrong with that vid?
-i had only been vidding for a year, this was going to be a big concept vid, i was going to Try Effects and Play With Color because thats going to make my vid better, i just did straight cuts and no messing with everyone, there’s fading from black/white to color, actual reality and constructed reality, narrative was completely lost, very superficial level, wasn’t anywhere for it to go, the whole thing was a mess, i had no fucking clue what the vid was saying, stripped the whole thing out, i made an AU of the movie, natalie portman isnt even in it, problematic when you take out one of the characters, saying different things but none were right, needed to go through that to have that struggle, less can be so much much more
-felt really committed to it, the vid i wanted was in there, the song could work for movie, (impressed you kept with it), because it was newer, made it after first VVC, less experience so i wasn’t so quick to just discard, having more experience i know this wont work, i don’t have the patience now, i couldn’t make it now or i wouldn’t have taken so long
-impressive you had such a strong idea of what you wanted to do, you had such a strong belief in it, i would have chipped away until there was something there
-lesson in your own convictions, ones i stood by convictions and reworked things, serendipity where i didn’t need to rework, better to fix problems, people talk a lot about beta process, only you know what you need to do, only you know whether its worth it to go try to get the original thing too soon, when you only have a movie, you’re not going to vid it again, this is your only opportunity, settling when there could be something great is not an option
-wanted to do the best i could do, because i was inexperienced, i couldn’t look at it and say this is great for these specific reasons, if i thought in my gut this wasn’t right, then people will tear it up, your vid has no statement, why did you rush this
-you have to ask why is this not working, try doing it again, blank timeline and try new section, ask others vidders why this doesn’t work, they might not understand it if they ask then you see where you haven’t decided
-if you do different versions, save different project files, had to get completely away from where i started, that was a journey i had to take, you may have been right beforehand
-Given song and idea and had to work out what i was doing with it: I Enjoy Being a Girl, girly things vs. girl kicking ass, many different versions, which of them fit
-Establish some goals: original version- very much, of its time, i wanted the vid to be more, 2003 sandra allen version: its quicker, had modern broadway voice to it
-which version meets your goals: things i do like, shes a much better singer, partly because i don’t like the modern version, this had a punch to it so i could do humorous things with it
-good performance: pat suzuki wins, might prefer mtv unplugged version, tongue in cheek, obviously playful: sandra allen because of instrumentation, lots of jazz hands everywhere, emphasized silly side, unless i did a really good job you might thing id take it seriously, funny in places: either, both versions have some hard to reverse gender stereotypes, original broadway version could work if contrasting older gender roles with current but not with only post modern girls
-ends with who'll enjoy being a guy having a girl like me ends in original which would be tough versus middle of vid which can be edited
-Sandra Allen: i really hate the opening, it was so obviously passive, what am i going to do with that, the beginning has to be establishing part of idea, lyrics was hardest to do flip on source material, too much work to have that opening at all in the vid
-if im doing anything high concept, change on either song or footage, you can make that or break that in the first 30 seconds, start with brand new hairdo, you know its Sydney doing her disguise to kick ass, then i have an abrupt start to the song
-also the song is long with lots of instrumentals everywhere, could cut out some for beginning, worked great except it was in a different key for opening, if you do need to it, heresluck will explain it all, lets just see how we can get the most out of this song, its not that im just a wimp, the verse would be worse off for making a vid, those are the decisions you will be forced to make, by taking this out am i strengthening the song/footage connection or the song/idea connection, filler can make vid weaker if not enough footage
-the ive been given song can happen with festivids, not always say i want you to vid this song, will feel like you have constraints, not too much different, been prescribed a fandom and have an idea of what someone thinks about it, ensuring the things you pick checks their boxes and your own boxes, lives up to the idea and proposal and if you need to, edit the song
Critique
-tact is just not saying true stuff: cordelia chase
-what are some things? like song choice
-some clips are great at matching choruses to song but then don’t know what the lyrics meant, song comprehension
-venue choice, aesthetic that doesn’t match their aesthetic
-watching the vid and knowing the person has the song as a fandom and not visuals to fandom, bad visual choices in support of song
-someone not understanding when a clip is removed from a scene, it loses some of the context, its really not there any more and it no longer makes sense without supporting material
-talky face in material, if don’t know the show, don’t know whats happening
-if im bored and i cant explain why, its hard to find something nice to say, you, you made a vid, its hard to figure out what they should change if im not engaged enough to pay attention
-its hard for me to tell you whats working but i can tell you whats not so im choosy in betaing
-effects: mismatch in taste or just me with effects, hard time whether they work or not
-is this legitimately a problem with the vid or just me and other people will think its awesome
-pretentious vids, I never know what to say, this is near and dear, so much work and energy, its liked failed experiments with the music
-"trying to obscure to make the shallow deep" old writing critique
-do you need a masters degree in highlander for this?, a vid with an esoteric point that you yourself understand completely but there’s no way anyone else will understand it
-subtly has no place for vidding, you have 3 minutes, please
-comedy vids that are too long, i thought it was funny for the first minute and then you lost me
-the vid that you don’t know if its funny or not, trying to make a comedy vidshow, what if this is not meant to be hilarious
-see someones completed vid, why didn’t you show this to me before you finish, now its too late
-do i bring it up at all? can this criticism be constructive, can this be a learning experience later, is this song a problem or is this person's regard to song choice something that needs to be brought up
-first angel vid, fandom of her heart, vid was cleverly done but boring because song choice was bad, song was repetitive, nowhere to go, asked for crit, i liked her, debated and debated, wrote comment, deleted half of it, posted it and felt guilty, we had good conversation about it, then later she gave me beta and gave her best feedback ever after, not because i sent her fb before, a relationship can survive that, people are not always such delicate fragile flowers
-beta vs. vid review, your relationship to the person and how well they knew you
-this issue or this issue, if they say its great, im afraid they’re not saying anything, they’re trying not to hurt your feelings
-communication with betas, be brutally honest, tell me whats wrong with it
-i feel we’ve gotten out of is public comment and critique, so concerned with not scaring off people, i don’t think we have an agreement of whats acceptable to say in public, i find it difficult sometimes because i want to treat you all like my friends because i want to tell you what i like/don’t like but i have to shield myself because i don’t know you and if you’re someone whose going to hear what i say and its going to destroy you for the rest of your life and i know most of you will say, WHAT is she talking about and tell all your friends but want to be sure there’s a safe place to say negative stuff
-i struggle with saying whats positive, people cope up with bad feedback when sandwiched between good stuff, people are more willing to trust critiquer knows what they’re talking about, its more easy to trust the person is giving them critique when they show they know what works and doesn’t work, they’re actually paying attention
-at the point the vidder has something to show you, its positive that they were able to export something, im terrible beta because i say i want to beta and then shit happens and i disappear, you do need to know whats working in the vid, every vid has something that's working, there’s a spark, its your job as a mentor to say that, to help nurture that and guide it, you don’t want to crush someone with negativity, maybe PS is your element, that is false
-not you should never open premiere but, can that vid be saved?
-important to have a relationship to be able to say that, there’s a level of trust there, so be sure to say what they’re doing right and not working
-also so they don’t break whats working while trying to fix things
-say good/bad so you show you know what you’re doing, you get out of immediate personal reaction, its not only about you as an audience member, step out of your own, this didn’t work for me, focus on the vid rather than focusing on yourself
-at escapade we tell people to look at how you feel not making broad generalizations, it kind of goes in to not having a safe space, maybe it should be kept to betas and friends
-i want positive stuff not because negative stuff is hard to hear, its made for small group of people so i ask someone who doesn’t know to see if people will actually understand it
-you’re doing strange fandom for beta? dante's cove producers saw it and thought it was funniest ever
-different critique modes, did you intend that to be, whats your goal of that scene, if thats what you’re trying to do, then here's what you can do to support it, giving more targeted to help reach your goal vs. that didn’t work
-if i hear anything positive, im shocked, its nowhere near as negative as what im saying to myself
-if a stranger asks for feedback in public, they say that its okay for crit, how many would do it?
-how public is it? people have been burned before, good communication is important, people come to beta with different expectation, communication for themselves, i want you to tell me if its awesome before i post, what is the conversation we're supposed to be having
-my aesthetic vs. their aesthetic, their judgment versus mine, whether this will be useful for them, ive given feedback which was not the type of critique they want, they didn’t focus on the things ive focused on, they’re more fandom focused, i thought it was very relevant and it wasn’t for them at all, it makes asking for critique really difficult, bad vid or not my kind of vid
-for someone i know, i might bring up one of these things but for someone i don’t know, i wouldn’t bring up basic premise being bad
-if i messed up song choice someone better tell me because im not switching myself
-for betaing fic is, what kind of help are you looking for, how close are you looking for, if i just want proofreading, if there’s pacing problem ill bring it up differently if they’re looking for proofing, it determines how i bring stuff up
-the first two vids i made, i didn’t know anyone to ask, it was the only way i knew was to ask for crit publicly
-is there a context where'd you’d tell someone, there’s a ton of vids to this song that maybe you should reconsider the song
-sometimes i wouldn’t bother saying because they’re not interested, they’re making it anyways, but if for a broader audience than i would say its appropriate because discussing your own aesthetic is easier
-song choice easier to talk about because its considered aesthetic as opposed to a taste issue
-would i give feedback if they say they want it, depends on knowing fandom, if i know that show really well i can say, i know all these other clips can help, idk teen wolf so im not going to be able to speak well to whether its a good vid
-maybe ask if you actually need a beta for a vid thats not my fandom
-i like to ask beta for someone who knows the fandom and one doesn’t
-the venue matters to, if its just for small fandom then i don’t care but if im sending it to vividcon i want to know if someone whose never seen it is going to die at the two minute mark
-say things with I statements that interest us as an audience as a whole, your opportunity to talk about whether the song choice goes with the fandom, it doesn’t have to be crit to improve vidder, it can be general things to discuss with community
-vid review is not just for vidder, its talking about the vid, everything on this list has come up in vid review, its a context shift
-i find vid review hard, i watch the vid saturday night, then i wait 12 hours and discuss the next morning, not a great vidwatcher so i only know if i want to draw pink sparkly hearts around it or not, if i think its worth discussing, i need to watch it at least twice, conversation is hard to have for structural reasons
-premieres show will be streaming and we have 9 copies, if you really want to speak about a vid, watch that vid or that show again, was there a dog in that?
-we've lost the ability to say smart things with other people and not just in your room, id like to get it back, its not about the vidders, its about understanding how vids work
-people know other people, sometimes afraid to lose a friend, we're not always sure they’ll be happy you said something, you don’t want to harsh everyone’s glow
-i remember some brutal escapade reviews, people would stumble out gasping for air, might be muskiness, it was valuable learning experience, why this song, why did you send this vid to escapade
-we didn’t have the vocab at escapade, it was more, this didn’t work, someone would say why, it progressed, we've come up with ways to talk about vids, we can say more than subjective it sucks
-we were like 2 and now we're 5
-pretty new, not close to everyone, because other people know it, other people know the language, not part of vvc community (now you are), came up in living room watching vids, different way speaking about vids, not comfortable bringing up things when people don’t know me, who the hell are you, maybe i do know everyone later
-i dislike the way this conversation tends to get phrased as squeefest and here's what didn’t work, deeply analytical of this is how it did work and here's why, not just for justification to get away with saying your vid sucks, to analyze how vids work, to say best thing ever because THIS, thats an option too
-i would feel bad if i didn’t give harsh feedback for a vid at a con that was a troubling thing for me
-new ways to talk about vids are fantastic, don’t think we don’t appreciate it
-the willingness to accept feedback for someone who doesn’t know your fandom or language, its good to have that acceptance here
Classic Hits
(missed first 5 min)
-it has shadow, light/dark with black and white footage
-adding to that impression of long shots, real consistency of blocking, can identify genre by the way things are framed visually, by the distance away from each other, if you’re doing an AU vid, if you alter the cropping, etc, itll give you impression of footage, we don’t realize consciously, it does give an impression of a time, of a place, of a genre
-if you like vidding tv, looking at older gangster movies look similar, before you had TV, barely hour long films that were released in succession
-if you want to make it more modern, add cropping or internal motion, changing that can have a big impact on that footage, if you want to revel in the time and place, that can be charming, if you’re doing a multifandom vid and you want to make it more consistent
-what ive found vidding older sources, its nice with the long slow shots to find the shots i need it, there’s always two or three extra frames
-cutting back and forth between conversations, quick cutting can be hard to work with
-i cant get enough emotion out of a back of an ear
-i felt trapped by older source, what do people think about layering like colors and tints
-because of history of hand tinting films, i find it acceptable, we specifically included a vid that was tinted by vid
-i noticed blue tint that grew along that was a metaphor, why is this blue in all of it...ohh
-feedback for hollywoodgrrl, maybe you should blue tint(?)
-ive had an idea to do ?, thought to take a razor blade through mona lisa freaks me out, the shots are so contained is freaking me out (the original will still be there)
-taking razor blade though photocopy
-vidding in my head but it freaks me out to vid THIS director
-when dealing with older sources, there’s a lot of cultural baggage, our personal cultural history and the broader cultural context, think about your personal movies and differences
-i did a vid to wild, wild west, it was not near and dear to child, its more the way an adult looks at the show, now people find that vid on YT and say, that is just not right, its easier to work with something close to heart, just snuggle it with love, not enough footage to make something work
-i have so much reverence in my heart for Universal that I don’t want to fuck them like an animal (Closer suggested)
-when something has been spoofed and homaged, can you vid something unironically
-when watching dracula, it felt like i had already seen it because of culture, i know whats coming
-it becomes cliche because of culture and not the original, its difficult not to make it funny
-noticed about butch cassidy, never seen movie but know ending, vid subverted expectations, focused my attention on parts i haven’t seen, i saw dracula, bride of dracula, etc i broke down crying, his face, i cried, to see something so connected to pop culture but connect very differently
-because they’re imitated in pop culture, its a reference, i find a lot of the time its familiar but not as familiar as I thought it would be
-saw psycho for the first time, may think you know it but you don’t know it until you see it
-wanted to talk about wizard of oz, i love it, its interesting because its such an iconic series which differs from the book, you have wicked both book and musical which are different, there’s so much cultural context there, can you do a sincere wizard of oz when so many people are familiar with wicked, can you do something without cultural context
-you have to be aware of what audience is bringing in and think about making choices clear
-depends on how universal the story is, its a very western story, when you talk about a larger story like cinderella, its more universal, you have less heavy lifting to do
-one of the great things about having cultural history is you can screw with them and people will find enjoyable because they understand they love being screwed with
-on one level its a seriously felt triangle and on another level its extremely wack, we're aware of what tbm is doing, shes recontextualizing enough to take it down a different path
-do you have to recontextualize to make people feel like you’ve done something new with it, do you have to do something completely new again
-one of the most emotionally affecting is fred and ginger, a lot of it comes from familiarity as well as not knowing
-we expect subversive so it becomes subversively to do it unsubversiveness
-fred/ginger played into enchanting nature, its a part of peoples lives, connect to the emotional part of the source that people love, there’s a sincerity in older films you don’t get with it
-there’s a form of reveling thats different than special effects action movies, we can really emphasize that to celebrate these cinematic endeavors, for the spectacle of the time, there were great outfits
-problematic aspects of older cinema: racist as fuck and sexist to boot, i watched a lot of older stuff like charlie chan with yellowface
-narration that was so racist that i thought it was a parody
-how much responsibility do we have to say, you are super racist, super sexist, not much we can do about it but we can approach it
-don’t recommend people do what i do, (gold digger) mix problematic source with problematic song text, i have an enjoyment of the vid, it is burdened with...
-had problem finding music for older sources, i get uncomfortable using music from cultures that those movies were excluding
-golddigger: if you always cut out the racist bits, you lose the discussion
-gold digger: i don’t think i cant make the source because im a white guy, but don’t want to blindly appropriate without culture context, knowingly entering into something which allows recognition of part of whats going on, im very hesitant because i don’t have the knowledge and understand to properly address the issues, growing up with these movies i have a different view, i was just vidding it as a movie i saw growing up, it doesn’t have the same connection to the intellectual issues even if you know about them, can conveniently ignore things, don’t recommend it, prefer more honest, more aware and sensitive approach is better
-american vs. other north american/european context, ohh americans think about this differently
-gold digger has grown on me a lot, i want to make vid about americans going into the war and japan but it scares me
-you’re getting angry at what the vid is pointing out not the vidder showing it, its better to show it than ignore it and let it go away
-ive been working on philadelphia, everyone knows its aids but its all the gays fault, it has to be an exaggeration, how can you be such a jackass on film, this movie is important, i want to make the vid in the same way, don’t enjoy it but need to say what i want to say
-what if you have french video and it has a stupid aspect ratio?
-cropping, do what you have to do
-seven different aspect ratios, did you just make that shit up, someone bring up the giant mutual ant
What's My Motivation
-story of panel: i did a survey, then it turned into a vid, i had an idea and it seemed like a good idea with good presentation software, im going to move people, going to be gifs, meaningful supporting vids...and then...it was all in my head, do i think a room full of vidders can sit in a room and talk about ourselves for 45 minutes (laughs)...yes
-can it be that ive never made a vid just for...myself?
-i loved how encouraging it was to just talk about how frustrating it is for all vidders
-why did i start vidding: i could do interesting things without having creative ability, i know what she meant, ive seen her vids, i would disagree she would have creative abilities, i don’t paint or draw, don’t create things out of thin air, making your own connections can be a great creative outlet
-i saw a lecture john klease made about creativity: not actually talent, its not something you have or don't have, its just a mode, there’s open and closed, open is making connections that are creative that you wouldn’t see, closed mode is where you actually get shit done, you need both modes, also in writing theory
-all motivations are valid, knowing our motivations helps us, keep going through tough spots, vidding is both community focused and utterly self-absorbed which is a good thing, self-knowledge is good
-what's your motivation? : survey
-ive thought about my vids but have never looked at vids that i actually finished, motivation for finishing is different
-ive only finished one vid and the ones i didn’t finish didn’t have the same emotions
-emotion connection, can call it the conviction
-finishing vids for cons, when i did my first vid, there weren’t cons, i did it to show my friends, i can make a show out of these, enjoy something together
-i just made it for me, i don’t care if anyone else sees it, why did i put it online, even though its a personal thing, even if its not for someone, you’re tossing out a piece of yourself, maybe there’s some people out there who will get me
-omg i love this too, its very personal and emotional
-i make the vids i want to see but i put them online because i take the leap of faith that someone else will also like it
-thats why with CVV and premieres you can see if other people are liking
-i feel less alone in the universe now
-super random vid, send it to cons so im showing it to somebody
-sometimes the vid you didn’t expect to do and people were like, this is amazing...oh yeah? oh yes it was!
-i wanted to see pretty pictures of kirk, its shallow but thats what it was, i did a parody, treating it as a comedy, i could kind of react to it
-help control our expectations for how much time and energy to put in for vidding
-when you lose that emotional connection, i was going for big emotion and all ive created is distaste
-cyclical, sometimes cant do a vid and have to put it in and then go back to it
-has motivation changed over time, ive been in different communities, most of my vids have been for other people, ive made friends and they like my vids and so i made vids for them, technical motivations in amv community, my motivation has changed a great deal
-when finding a new fandom, do you get new motivations?
-im not much of a tv, current fandom vidder, its more movies
-without deadline, its okay to take a break and come back to it and then come back and rewatch the source and see why you fell for it
-its okay to have fannish affairs, i was really into stargate universe in 2 weeks, do we need to finish vids?
-i need reasons to finish vids, i find a song and its so source, i have a vague amorphous part for this vid, im not one of those storyboarding people, i do all the clipping and then i put it together all pretty like, oh shit im out of ideas, im not out of ideas, i don’t know how to continue
-rewatch the source, listen to the song away from the visuals, ill remember why i was excited to make the vid in the first place, ill see how i can edit my way out of the whole
-play the song in your head, in the shower or in the car
-cosign the cycle vidding, vid when you’re ovulating if you’re a woman
-the Lord King Rag Vid
-motivation changes: absolutely, as im older and im less pelvically motivated and more intellectually motivated, now i need very strong motivation, now i enjoy making vids for friends, strongest motivators for me
-im less motivated by fandom in general, motivated by things that come to me, new ways to do things, good input out of the world, helps guide yourself into a new direction
-i do really well when i have external constraints placed on me, i get overwhelmed with a lot of options and shut down
-if i had a vid im really excited about, got distracted by clipping, recreate what got you excited, watch with a friend, recreate a work deadline, a family thing, another thing you’re avoiding, the best way to not procrastinate is to have something worse to procrastinate on
-i find it helpful to work on multiple vids on once, if i get tired on one vid, i can work on something else that i am in the mood for, im still productive
-keep being involved in vidding, when i stop vidding for more than 2 weeks then i stop vidding for months, i like to be constantly going even if its not a lot per day
-glass of wine can do wonders, watch the source, get back into that headspace
-sneak in breaks to do something fun like games or read fic, it puts you off high alert especially when you’re trying to enjoy yourself
-one deadline to the next, cant do something else without being on deadline, only vids ive finished are for festivids, if festivids happened twice then id have two vids
-external structure with our consent, people are expecting me to finish it
-my motivations have changed, everything i was vidding about disconnection and isolation so i made an effort to vid things that bring me joy, its easier to expect lack of response, people don’t share joy in the same way as opposed to the deep sad stuff where you’ll like, why don’t you get me
-how do you impose self-deadlines?
-active canon, i need to tie this into a certain period of time or the next season will fuck up my entire idea
-living with other vidders, having other vidders next to you makes you want to vid too
-you don’t want to feel left out if others are doing it
-Do you find that emotional effort scales for a long period of time? i have to be really outraged to do any vid that takes a lot of effort
-yes im feeling negative towards the vid and then i come back and i have to feel angry again to finish
-it depends what the negative feeling is, if its a problematic aspect of canon, harder to sustain than other people are doing it wrong
-when someone is wrong, it gives you a thesis statement and you have supporting arguments
-all motivation is valid because when i started vidding i was known from a artistic, creative butterfly, i was pretty good at all of it but i couldn’t sustain it, but when i put in expense for upgrading my computer, i had to swear that i would finish the vid, i had an external accountability, i don’t finish vids but i don’t call them vids if i don’t finish, giving my word to someone motivates me, he cant say, you didn’t finish it, you lied, i promised someone else versus the yarn and the clay, they’re all there but over 14 years i have not left vids on the roadside, if i try things out and it doesn’t work, i may make baby vid but when i finish a vid, when i have trouble, ill know ive made myself accountable
-Why does it help us to know our motivation?
-the only vid ive never finished, i found a wonderful song, fit the fandom well, why aren’t i vidding the slash couple, see the vid in my head before i make the vid
-this time is going to be different, brother will help with tech and force into accountability, can tell people that i promise vids for, is it going to be next week?
-didn’t realize it wasn’t a good idea when demotivated
-a lot of people have cheerleaders, friends, roommates who vid and help motivate
-external structure, there are other cons who want vids that don’t get them because vividcon, there are auctions too
-you will find the happy place motivation before, just vid right now the happy moments, try to go back to that, its never the end in terms of our creativity
